One thing i've learned, is that it's not just the graphics card, but the little things that make all the difference, the typing experience, the touchpad, the screen, whether you can plug in to a docking station over usb c and charge as well as do video, etc...

Not going to be playing the latest AAA games on ultra but want something i can use for the next couple of years and the way you broke this down and explained what’s important is great. Other channels just waffle through CPU and GPU like we all know what is what with the naming conventions but you made it seem easier to follow. So thank you. I have a 5900x, 64gb ram, 3070 and 144hz ultrawide desktop PC, so I wasn't trying to get a desktop replacement laptop ... but a few months ago I got a Lenovo Legion 7 Slim with a Ryzen 7 5800h, 16gb, 500gb NVME, RTX 3060 and 1440p 165hz IPS screen for £1100. It's mostly for work, but I play a few games when I travel too.
I've been very impressed with it so far, and since I play Cyberpunk 2077 on my big rig the laptop mostly plays StarCraft 2, Civilisation VI, Mass Effect Legendary Edition and it runs these at max settings 1440p flat out whilst in power saving mode, meaning it's cool and fairly quiet. I only need to turn it up to balanced mode and it runs the Witcher 3 nearly maxed out at 1440p well over 60fps.
Laptop hardware has come a really long way for efficiency and performance in only a couple of generations...

First of, great video. I think you are one of the rarest to actually understand what "budget" looks like and to give a fair assessment of what a budget gaming pc can do.
As for the computers themselves, though I understand that a lot of money making these goes into the high end parts, I'm still baffled to see plastic everywhere at like 1700€, which makes your PC look cheap even when you already paid the price of three PS5/Series X for it. Is there a technical reason why you wouldn't want a metal casing for these beasts? Does this has to do with the thermals or is it just to save on manufacturing costs? (genuine question)

    • @mikehorton6433
      @mikehorton6433 Před rokem +2

@@wahebskull I was undecided between the ASUS ROG G15 and the Aorus 15G back when I bought the laptop, what sold it to me with the Aorus was the dual channel RAM slots and MUX switch, where as the ASUS had a fixed RAM slot so you could only upgrade one RAM card and no MUX switch. As well, it was the availability of stock as the pandemic hit supply chains hard so many specific products were difficult to get hold of.
At the end of the day, it's personal preference, from screens to CPU power, what you look for in a gaming laptop, how you will use it in daily tasks and the types of games you play, are they competitive or RPG's. Realistically, an RTX 3070 would have been my preference for the games I play like Tomb Raider and A Plague Tale, but prices back then were still high as the 30 series GPU's were newly released, but honestly and RTX 3060 and above is powerful enough, bearing in mind the wattage. Know what you want first, then decide on the laptop. Think he made a video on this too, but from what I've experienced through many reviews, I'd go for an ASUS ROG, Lenovo Legion, MSI or Gigabyte/Aorus.

So if we consider i7 12700H and 3070ti laptop, why not consider something like MSI GP66? It's for 1,5k right now and had one of the highest fps in games compared to other similar spec laprops due to power allocation. GPU on that thing can use 150W and that took the FPS to 3080 levels. And if we're already there, why not consider GE66 or even GE67(but this one come close to Aorus 17 price, but it's OLED 240HZ!!).

One of my good friends is in the same boat. you know, on Ebay there's a German shop (ab-zauberfuchs) selling like-new Acer Nitro 5s (they tell me they're show models from stores), and I bought one from them a few weeks ago. A little over 900 euros for a 17.3 inches Nvidia 3060 AMD 5600H 16 GB ram Laptop. I don't think you can beat those prices anywhere, at least right now, even if prices ARE admittedly going down on average. Only annoyance is the german keyboard, and MAYBE the fan being a bit loud, though I don't really care about it. And there were quite a few different models, with worse or better GPUs/CPUs/RAM and so on.
It's amazing going from struggling with 30 FPS on 720p (old laptop had an NVIDIA 850m GPU) to 144 fps on 1080p. (of course it depends on the game, and my favourite ones are not particularly demanding. I'm currently playing Trails of Cold Steel 3 and "Lost in Random")
I agree that, especially for a "main gaming computer" laptop that has to last a few years, an NVIDIA 3060 is probably what people should go for.

I have still my msi gt 60 from 2013. 3 ssd and 1 hdd for a total of 1,6 TB of space, 26 go ram. I had to replace the burned gtx 780m with oem one and battery. The first gpu lasted from 2013 to 2018. Nvidia gave up drivers support in 2019. 3 ssd's, 1 hdd. A pretty neat 15" back in time and the gpu was a great bang. I paid around 1500-1800€ ( add to the two 256 gb ssd's )
A thick but beautiful shaped laptop ( 17" now are about the same displacement ) survived windows 8. 8.1 and 10 upgrades without any major flows. Just have to correct a blue screen due to ssd driver problem with motherboard on ac unity. But google made the way.
More amazing, i was able to play Battlefront 2 multiplayer with the integrated Intel graphics when i wait the new gpu.
Back in 2013 it was the most powerfull mobile gpu and 15" machine. When prices were still correct. Until sli configs, titan and crazy 5000€ laptops arrived.
Would i buy again a laptop ? I don't know' i would go for the ticker one and best GPU to have a longlasting Laptop. I will keep it mine until windows 10 end of support in 2025 and maybe switch to Apple Mac book pro.
It is a brillant support but Nvidia stopped the support in 2019 is really bad, only 6 years after release, it's shamefull. So 2020 games are not launching and/or unplayable.
It was a time when a 15" laptop outperform the unreleased next gen console that were PS4 and xbox one and that is the only time i think it ever happened.
    Pros :
    - good times with friends on lan/online parties
    - a poserfull editing video machine on the go
    - upgrade with ssd's and ram and reparability for GPU and battery
    - very good build quality, everything works 9 years after
    - a lot a connectivity that made a good desktop replacement machine
    Cons :
    - noisy if you want performance, ok alone with noise canceling headphones, bad for your surrounded people
    - heavy
    - Thick
    - Poor battery life on performance
    - Nvidia support stopped after 6 years
