    Here, you will discover:
Lao Tzu is the supposed founder of Taoism, and I say supposed because there are not only doubts as to whether he was the one who devised this philosophy or whether he intended it to become a religion, but also because there are doubts as to whether it was a single person or several, or whether he even existed at all. There are two ways of telling the story of Lao Tzu: as a historical figure, whether he existed or not, and as a deity. Tradition eventually turned this Chinese philosopher into a god, and not just any god, but practically a god of gods. As if that were not enough, there are many variants of the myth.
So, what we will do today, as always, is to tell the most neutral and complete version possible about his mythological history, trying to reconcile all the versions. Then, I will talk to you about the supposed historical figure that inspired this myth. Without further ado, let's look at the complete history of Lao Tzu.
In the beginning, there was nothing. There was only the void, or as it is called in Taoist mythology, the Gu Ji. Then the Tao, which is the primordial essence of the universe, produced the One, the simple concept of unity. When the One existed, nothing no longer existed, for now there was something. So, the Gu Ji, nothingness, passed through a transformation and was called Taiji, which means the great polarity. In this unity, the forces of the opposite poles of Yin and Yang swirled, causing a primordial chaos called Hundun.
At this moment of pre-creation, when the universe was still a single thing in which all the disorder was contained, manifested itself from among the chaos, the first being of the universe: Yuan Shi Tianzun, whose name means Venerable Celestial from the Original Beginning. He was the first being and the first deity that ever existed, creating himself from the purest primordial energy. When he was born, Yuan Shi began to give substance to all things and oversaw the earliest phase of the creation of the universe. More than being a conventional god, Yuan Shi is a representation of the principle of all being. From him, all things arose. He is eternal, unlimited, and formless.
Finished with this task, Yuan Shi Tianzun caused a second form of himself to manifest, another deity called Lingbao Tianzun, the Celestial Venerable of the Sublime Treasure. Lingbao finally separated Yin from Yang, light from murkiness, and classified all the elements of the universe in their corresponding places, ordering the world as we know it.
