Socrates lived between 469 and 399 B.C.E. and he is one of the most famous philosophers in the entire history of humankind. He is sometimes considered as the founder of the Western philosophy and his work reflects the philosophy of Skepticism, which has as its main base that knowledge can be obtained through systematic doubt and continual testing. Although Socrates hasn't written anything, he has forever changed philosophy itself. Most of the things we know today about his philosophy came from Plato, Aristophanes and Xenophon whose writings are in the form of dialogues between Socrates and other Athenians. These writings gave birth to a new literary genre called the Socratic dialogue. Unfortunately, he is also famous for his tragic life. In 399 BCE, he was accused of corrupting the youth of Athens and of failing to acknowledge the city's official gods. After a trial that lasted just a single day, he was sentenced to death. He spent his last day in prison, refusing to escape. The way his life ended can be considered as the founding myth of philosophy as a discipline. For one to really practice philosophy, they have to go against societal norms, to question everything even at the risk of their own peril. Everything about Socrates was impressive: his appearance, personality, and behaviour, as well as in his views and methods. And this made many of the people around him to write about him, including Plato. It is unfortunate that Socrates did not write at all and all we have is indirect evidence. Also, it is said that each age produces a Socrates of its own, however there are some core fundamental teachings of the original Socrates that transcend the centuries.

I was leading a life of ignorance until i believe was stopped by the higher forces. My life was all about job, family,home and not paying attention to my thoughts and life itself. When I lost my job couple of years ago and then there was a break in my life. I was forced to introspect my life . Fortunately, i have always trusted my way of living and always moved with the flow. I guess this attitude has helped me to accept the complete different life easily that i am living now. That's why, when I was ignorant of my actions, i never tried to change things as per my way. Accepted all good and the contrary in my life. When life halted and i began to pay attention to my life closely, especially my feelings and thoughts, i realized many things that needs to be changed. I fully dedicated myself in self improvement in every area of life. To my surprise,life unfolded in a complete different form of myself than before. I am so glad to say that i feel that i have now completely transformed into new person, completely liberated from all chains of thoughts which held my true personality. Reading is something which actually expands the wisdom of an individual, create new vision and help us to see life from totally new perspective. Soon i started asking question,what is that i can do whole day without feeling board or feeling drain of energy. Now I know it is something related to philosophy that i can work on 24/7 happily. I am glad to find this video and many more like this. Thank you so much for helping people like us to understand ourselves better and in return contribute our better self to the world.
More like you are being who you supposed to be this whole time.. then unfold someone new.. I found myself back to thoughts of my youth now I thought they didn't like I was like wow I thought I had it the whole time since the beginning.. I truly feel we are born with the wisdom and the truth in the earth as time goes on we get pulled away.
I very much like the ancient wisdom of Socrates. My favourite quote is “The only true wisdom is in knowing that you know nothing”.

He also taught us to write all our thoughts and ideas down even if it goes against a lot of what society thinks. Maybe some day those thoughts will be referred to as revolutionary.

socrates actually told plato that books were an evil technology that would ruin the human brain because it would cause you to NOT remember things fondly. That's why plato wrote down socrates thoughts. books didn't become a major player in philosophy until aristotle, aristotle was the 3rd lineage philosopher, under plato, who created academia.

He was not arrested, he proceeded to the court according to his own will, he could avoid proceeding to the court, according to the laws of his time.

If only we could practice Socrates theory as a whole, this world would be a better place to live. There's so much separation in this country alone, not including around the world, we're still divided by class, race and gender...etc. His philosophy on life has opened my mind to a different narrative of how I look at the negativity around me, I still find happiness, contentment, peace and laughter for myself. Socrates quoted, happiness requires the small things in life and require less effort. We need more "Socrates" in our world today, I truly enjoyed listening to his theories, he was a wonderful human being.

I have one comment: besides the common belief, Socrates wrote many books, mainly dialogs. Most of what we have now, were written by Socrates. Then Plato and others took them one by one from his wife, Xanthippe, and as publishers put their names on them!

I have found most people tend to lean on philosophy,psychology & logic or to religious/ spiritual discourses only after retirement from mundane professional life! Actually only if these concepts are in built In life from early stages one would engage in creative meaningful work for the society & NOT for one's own selfish needs. You Would find God only in your good thoughts& deeds than in prayer gatherings or rituals or chanting !
Empiricism is an undeniable belief that asserts that knowledge can only be gained through experience, particularly sensory experiences. According to empiricists, learning is solely based on observation and perception. In other words, knowledge is not possible without relevant experiences.
Love your videos, always interesting & please keep up the good work. I love your delivery & hope you don't mind me saying - but do think you need to speak further from the mic / use a de-esser to tame those frequencies. Yeah, I’ve had this problem about telling on workmates or taking the blame before. So I read stoicism and Marcus Aurelius says tell the truth, great I thought. That’s that sorted. Now I hear Socrates says the opposite, I’m back to square one, which is blaming the person who most recently left the firm.👍😂

Yes one of Socrates’ charges was impiety, but this doesn’t mean he “refused to believe in the gods.” In The Republic and The Apology he even attends Athenian religious festivals and there is no real evidence that he was actually some sort of staunch atheist or something. It’s very likely that he did subscribe to the religious norms of his Polis, that being Athens. His last words before his death were even about securing a sacrifice to Asclepius. Otherwise, fantastic video as usual!
In Plato's Cratylus, Socrates describes the god Pluto as "...the perfect and accomplished Sophist...", but in the same dialogue he also describes how names can be "disguised" by altering "...a letter or two..." By employing simple logic, it appears that Socrates has actually described Plato as "...the perfect and accomplished Sophist..."
In Plato's Protagoras, Protagoras describes his fellow Sophists this way:
“Now the art of the Sophist is, as I believe, of great antiquity; but in ancient times those who practiced it, fearing this odium, veiled and disguised themselves under various names, some under that of poets, as Homer, Hesiod, and Simonides, some, of hierophants and prophets, as Orpheus and Musaeus, and some, as I observe, even under the name of gymnastic‐masters, like Iccus of Tarentum, or the more recently celebrated Herodicus, now of Selymbria and formerly of Megara, who is a first‐rate Sophist. Your own Agathocles pretended to be a musician, but was really an eminent Sophist; also Pythocleides the Cean; and there were many others; and all of them, as I was saying, adopted these arts as veils or disguises because they were afraid of the odium which they would incur.”
If this description of Sophists is applied to Plato, then it becomes obvious that Plato was employing Socrates as his "veil".
If it is accepted that the connection between Pluto and Plato was intended to communicate Plato's true identity to other Sophists, then this introduction of the "Stranger" in Plato's Sophist offers confirmation that Socrates and others were simply "...made up for the occasion...":
"Theodorus: Here we are, Socrates, true to our agreement of yesterday; and we bring with us a stranger from Elea, who is a disciple of Parmenides and Zeno, and a true philosopher.
Socrates. Is he not rather a god, Theodorus, who comes to us in the disguise of a stranger? For Homer says that all the gods, and especially the god of strangers, are companions of the meek and just, and visit the good and evil among men. And may not your companion be one of those higher powers, a cross-examining deity, who has come to spy out our weakness in argument, and to cross-examine us?
Theodorus: Nay, Socrates, he is not one of the disputatious sort-he is too good for that. And, in my opinion, he is not a god at all; but divine he certainly is, for this is a title which I should give to all philosophers."
Socrates: Capital, my friend! and I may add that they are almost as hard to be discerned as the gods. For the true philosophers, and such as are not merely made up for the occasion..."
Note that the initial identification of the Stranger as a "god" can be viewed as an allusion to Plato's identification with Pluto.
Agree with everything except not fully with pts 7 and 8. Happy with less unless improvish or exploited by elites. You owe nothing but you will be happy. No to bugs eating. No vengence unless harm by elites who used poisons. That is self defense instinctlively. Pt 1 is abt finding the truth and that is the best pt.
I remember coming up with the same "we know nothing" philosophy when I was like 13 😆 for the same exact reason. My hypothesis was, how can we know the rate of carbon decay millions or billions of years ago if we only have a tiny tiny tiny fraction of a fraction of a fraction or a decimal of a percent.... of data from today to tell us that? We simply dont. Extrapolate that into everything. We do not know what forces were applied before we began observing. We do not know anything told ever was truth. We literally do not know anything for a FACT. Not even that we are alive.
