Palia is a brand-new MMORPG that’s released into open beta as of the 10th August 2023 and with there being no more progress resets the game is basically fully released.
Palia is a casual community sim MMO made in unreal engine 4, the game was in development for 5 years and the way I’d describe it to my friends is it’s basically Stardew Valley but in third person and an MMORPG shared world.
I’ve actually been looking forward to Palia for a while because as much as I do like slaughtering hordes of monsters in fast paced action combat games, sometimes I like to kick back, relax and play something chill that doesn’t require too much thinking.
So what can you do in Palia?
Well basically Build an instanced house on an expandable plot of land, do quests to uncover the story, build relationships with NPCs, mine rocks, chop trees, go fishing, catch bugs, craft stuff, hunt wildlife, pick plants and find treasure out in the world, unlike Stardew Valley though the game has no melee combat, the only combat you’re able to dish out is shooting wildlife with your bow, it’s impossible to die in this game and it’s extremely casual friendly.
In this video I’ll give you my first impressions of the game with my pros and cons at the end.

I'm glad there is a market for games like this, but it just isn't for me. I don't mind some of those activities in small amounts, but to create an entire game around them is just too much to bare.

Resources are shared. If someone hits the same ore or tree as you, you can both loot it. The rare resources are called out in chat quite often and the flow trees require higher level axes or more than one person. You might get five people tagging them to all get resources. Pretty good mechanic. Same with hunting higher level animals - multiple people can tag them and they require several shots.
Ohhhhhh... This makes recent gameplay make much more sense now. 😂
@@CJ77777 I tried to confirm how it works but couldn't find enough info. I think it does work even if you're not in a party, on all resources (not just palium and flow trees). However it might just work on those, and not on say, copper. You can also earn achievements for doing skills together.
All in all, it makes the game more cooperative. Cooperative hunting is particularly good I believe because you're likely to rip through the animals quickly with fewer arrows and get more of the super rare Proudhorn and Chappas killed.
I sometimes come across loot bags for animals I lost track of, that someone else finished off and we both get loot for it which is nice. :)
I also read today that if you are standing next to someone else while fishing, it triggers a bit faster. So if people cluster near you, they're not being weird you're all getting a bonus for it (which appears top left like other bonus effects).
Doubt it makes fishing fun though ;)
50 person raid on the Mithril Thunder Ore, I hear there is a +3 Dagger inside? This game has raid potential even with no violence, just 50 people hammering on a Massive chunk of ore while the cave falls in. Genius.

While all of what you say is true, it's not really required. Playing solo you can do all if it by yourself mostly and hell, you don't even need to pay attention to the chat. Requests are also mostly pointless now.
Been playing since the open beta. I think my main issue so far is the lack of multiplayer activities. Other than cooking or shared resources which are completely optional there is nothing to do with other players. I thought the monthly event wouldve brought something like that but its literally the opposite.
You can't interact with your furniture. This killed it for me
Yeah I hope they add a market place where you can sell stuff to other players in an auction house kinda UI. I wanna make money off other players hard work xD. But also its very early in development. I expect they will add these things eventually if they ever want to keep up the momentum they have so far.

So, I joined the Palia discord about a month before beta and was really excited to give it a shot. I was talking with all the other people in the discord about what I want to do with my house and what it'd be like to live together.
What killed it for me is the fact that every house is fully instanced, meaning even in that case nobody has any reason to come interact with you. I know not every game can do open world houses, but for a game like this? At LEAST make it housing zones like FFXIV. If the main focus was going to be RP and making your own designer house, then it would have added a LOT of value to actually live near people so you could see the work they've done.....
Furniture interaction isn't patched in yet. Some minor things have been shown off to come soonish.@@robando2922
this game needs community events with mini-games and leader board, imagine a cooking or fishing contest with who can catch the rarest fish or the most fish, or who can cook the most perfect food or people could show off their food achievements in a tent, so many possibilites.

There's actually an event they've just released a couple of days ago and it's exactly that. However, it's still quite half-baked and not super engaging... but they're testing the ideas already.

Just started Palia a few days ago so I decided to search for some Palia vids, this was the first thing to show up. Really love your calming voice and the vid is great 👍
Peon is great.
For a game about crafting, community and relaxing, they sure did drop the ball on most of the key things that make those work; inventory management, multiplayer activities and sleep inducing grinds.
Regarding the cooking minigame, this is the sort of thing I want out of lifeskills. Spiritfarer I think has done this the best, with the processing materials step. You run your raw wood through a mill but if you do the minigame you get more/better processed wood. I like that it's a bit more involved, and I'm shocked more MMOs haven't taken this approach, especially something like New World that focuses so much on those skills. Palia is very on my radar but I'm going to wait and let them iron stuff out and expand. Looks good for such an early game though.

I've been itching for an MMO with more interesting life skilling, the most involved one I've played is FFXIV, but surely there can be something better
I have been playing since Closed Beta, it has lots of pros and cons.
You 'can' compete for resources, but every resource is shared if you get one hit in. So if you see someone mining clay, iron or Palium, just wait and let them get a hit and you're good to go. To make special 'rare' resources to spawn, Flow trees, Palium Ore, rare beasts, rare bugs etc. You need to clear things. A lot of people group up to de-forest areas near Proudhorn Pass like the Lorax movie as the trees have something like 10% to spawn as a flow when respawning so you just have to chop it down to the ground to get the special logs. Same with mining normal ores where Palium usually spawns, always mine those so Palium can spawn.
Community has been pretty chill and team-worky so far. Not a lot of great group activities, still lots of bugs in the game, glitches and stuff that doesn't work, but it is open Beta, so.. Just keep sending in bug reports/improvement ideas to the developers and they'll keep on improving.
Sometimes it gets boring to grind, like furniture making where you need like 50 Flow planks for one piece, and it takes bloody ages to get those, then you unlock next piece which also costs 40-60 planks and it just drives you up the walls - Remember to take breaks!
Overall, I am enjoying it as a casual game to play as I watch videos. It's free to play so I would recommend it to try at least. Their discord is active, chat usually helps you with any questions so give it a go!

i love this game and I don't feel like I'm needing to min max all the time - it's so chill and the sharing of resources is really nice; You can get a train of people all tagging along for stuff to loot together and look for things to call out! I did a copper train and had over 300 ore afterwards, with like 6 to 8 people all shouting out finds as we ran in a circle around Kilima XD

If you go to the shrines you've visitied, you can use renown to increase focus levels for either % of exp gained or how much total focus you can have.
This bit is so important is so badly explained in-game. I think they added a small tutorial for this last week, but it's still easy to glance over. There's a huge difference between running around with 200 max focus and 600 max focus, and the same is true for increasing your XP multiplier.
@@dicebar_This is what happens when people skip through the tutorial box and don't read it. There's a quest for each shrine and a tutorial box that explains what each shrine does. It's not the game's fault people can't read.
Should’ve have some parlor games! Perhaps gliding competitions, archery competitions and jousting tournaments. Have some items in the game, where players can be creative and come up with something to do with each other.

I started playing at the start of open beta. I love this game so much! Enjoyed watching you play. :)
My main issue with the game is the lack of longevity and purpose - once you've experienced and got a house - whats left? - in life sims the house or buildings state is always is in some form a means to and end: so you farm vegetables on your farm, then you use your newly house upgrade to make food, to use the food to combat/perform some activity - the game doesn't feel like it will last without the drive for me and i play a ton of life sims.

i just got the game after watching this and its exactly like you describe it. pretty much stardew valley but 3d with more things to do and its multiplayer. but my god is this game relaxing
I really like how he intros the game about how there isn't much violent and then goes into an ad about war machines.
i love Palia personally... And I agree with the character customisation, in fact it has been a point in their discord support feedback that was brought up
a lot... but beards are said to be on the way, so it seems that this is a BETA and not a release as you put it... But, the game could do better if...
- More inclusive character options
- Roof colours/tints
- More Farming options like sprinkers and scarecrows, even more plots
- Clothing options you can unlock and not just store items
- Search bars on storage

Love when storages are all connected. Game looks pretty fun! I do like combat in my crafting games, might have to stick to Grounded and Valheim for now. My wife hates combat, so would probably love Palia.
The problem is there is bassically 0 content.
Going to let this one cook in the oven for a year or two, could be a really fun game by then. Like with most MMORPG they become much better years after release with active development and community feedback.
hopefully they add actual combat and blacksmithing like right now its plain and a bit bland the only thing its offering is a stylized look.

What bothers me is this game was marketed everywhere as a mmo but it is not even close to that. I was expecting non-instanced housing and 1000+ players per server, instead you get instanced housing and 11 or so players per map. Either the devs lack the funds or ambition.

I have been playing Palia daily since it released. I have been loving it so far. I am in a community that is active and has almost daily cake baking parties for lots of gold. My biggest criticism would be that I would like to see more community activities. I would love to see a group activity like a WoW dungeon only Palia style . (I don't know how this would work, but I think it's what the game needs) You can do almost everything solo except cut down special magic trees. The game is definitely addicting and has met my expectations so far. The dev team really has been listening to feedback from the player base. Decorating your house has been a lot of fun. I am looking forward to seeing how the game develops in the years to come.

I've been playing this game solidly since it came out and I mostly love it. It does have a few issues though. The Dev team don't seem to be consistent with their cozy vibe idea and a lot of the newer content seems to be either very grindy or competitive. They've nerfed a lot of the systems that everyone used to make money which has increased the grind and they nerfed the amount of resources which increased competition. I like the basic game foundation and i am hopeful that the Dev team can keep adding fitting content to the game. As it stands Ive pretty much maxed out everything so far. So I will probably move on to pastures new but I will keep checking back in on this game. Oh and beards are coming :).

a bunch of my plots became unfarmable because a bug. It took over a month for them to respond to my ticket and their response was basically, "we're working on it". They released multiple updates before, during and after this with new additions to the in-game store. Man oh man, I would've purchased in-game items for sure if they made their game work as intended.
I've been loving the game way more than I expected. The community has been great and really helpful.
I really liked this one, its pretty chill and also highly addictive, you play and time just flies by. Hopefully there will be regular updates because at this point i already have almost everything maxed out and i started and the game is not even fully out yet, i started in closed beta

I have been absolutely addicted to Palia since I've learned of the open Beta, more multiplayer activates would be nice like quests and home-interactions and perhaps some type of combat? I understand the relaxed non-stressed expectation of the game/world, but a separate (like perhaps mines in Stardew valley?) would be nice, I'd like to hit slimes with a stick or something
I'm with you on the combat element. They've got the building part down, but if they can get some small scale randomized dungeon crawls in the game they'll have basically made the closest thing to Dark Cloud 2.

I think a great idea for this game would be dynamic events for multiple players to draw people together.
Games that force you to team up aren't all that fun all the time. Teamwork should not be a forced dynamic. It should always stay optional. :)
@@Wargod_ARTS That's why you have scaling events for how many people show up, it's not forcing you, it just adds another layer on, guild wars 2 does this and it works well.

Before watching: I've played since closed beta and I genuinely do have fun. I suspect / hope that this open Beta will be going on for a year because while there is a lot you can be doing in the game, I do feel like they need to add more. Perhaps a new area every once in awhile. This game is 100% a sandbox game. If you are the type to play Runescape, decide for yourself what you want to do today and what you want to work towards, this game is for you. It does have some questing and some relationship stuff where you can get to know all the NPCs and earn rewards etc... but ultimately you have a ton of ways to make gold, a good chunk of skills to work on, and its a very casual sandbox game. Its closed beta barely lasted a couple weeks... so go in with the mindset that its still early development. There will be bugs and server issues at times. The devs are very active on their discord, giving you updates on the status of the game.
The only criticism I would have is the servers are more like instances and each instance is only like 25 people. Every area is instanced. So I wouldnt call the game an MMO as advertised. However while playing, its not that big of a deal because you see people around you all the time. And given how resources work, (they dont respawn like runescape lol.. well except the bugs and animals you hunt) too many people in an instance may result in you not being able to gather enough resources. Of course you can always request resources, but I prefer gathering them myself.
After watching, I agree with all the Pros and Cons listed in this video. The fact that its very early on in development, I do think these things will get better. I think closed beta probably should have laster longer as to not give people the idea that this is all there will be. Some people expect open beta to be essentially a launch.. but thats not really the case.
I agree entirely with the character creator. The characters are very feminine lol. And I can't even make my skin color as light as I would have liked. Other people have had the same opinions. Some of us are pale and this game doesnt gwt much lighter than a Mediterranean skin tone. Hopefully they add more options.

I just started playing and I am really enjoying being able to wander around without monsters (and other players) trying to kill me! BTW, early in the game it is better to spend Renown on the shrines to increase your XP bonus, and you can get the writs to expand your home later on.

Hey Peon, I remember running into you with some friends and we just kinda went "Do you think it's actually him..? Naaaah" Glad you covered this game' It sure ain't the best but it makes time go by surprisingly quickly and is truly enjoyable with friends.
12:21 Tip, dont repair tool your tools. Its cheaper to just use gold at the repair station in the main town area.
In the beginning I used gold because resources has more value to me, but I havn't checked late game because I have hundreds of copper bars with no use for them besides tool repair. Is it worthwhile to sell the copper and repair with gold? That sounds unintended if it is the case.
Once you make x40 at a time for 1 iron ingot and 5 heartwood planks, I think that's worth it, if not just for the convenience of doing it at your home whenever you need it
The thing I like least about this game is how I seem to resent the presence of other players around, especially when hunting. I always feel like they are taking "my" resources, which isn't what's supposed to happen in a "social" game. I almost feel like it would have been better as a single-player game with a multiplayer option. I hope more multiplayer events are added in the future.

People keep saying Stardew Valley but this reminds me way more of My Time at Portia/Sandrock. Even some UI elements are alike. But this game fixes my main issue with those games (aside from the combat), that being the inventory on you homestead being shared. MTaP for some reason decided you could only put like ~16 items in a crate and none of them were connected. You had to sift through each one just to find whatever you were looking for.
Ya agreed- "Stardew Like" is basically the same thing as "Souls Like" now, where it's going to be used to describe games that only have a passing resemblance in the most superficial ways lol.

I am soo addicted to this game! I am glad that the devs though indie, are trying their hardest to be transparent to the community and lays out actual plans for the game. They mentioned on their latest dev note that furniture interaction will be possible so I am looking forward to that, also, more mmo activities and what you're requesting, beard. Lol

Some points, I miss from this MMO
- No true multiplayer, I thought you could actually team up with people and work towards goals as a village. I thought this was a social MMO but everyone is just doing their thing.
- Been like this since the 3 day after I got my open beta key...still can't login to the game. Maybe there is something weird with my desktop.
I've been playing this game since closed beta and it's highly addictive. But there is not much stuff to do with your friends. It mostly feels like a single player game. I love the world and im interested to learn more about the lore though.
First minute be like:super friendly game only a little violence with hunting that's it

Can stack storage bins too, it gets a bit hectic as you add more.
you ran into hodari right away which is funny because in the dev livestream for the game recently all of the female devs simped over him super hard yet you can't make a player character that looks anything like him. Male player character choices are just different levels of non threatening soy infused femboys. the dichotomy of the devs making a chad npc and simping over him then limiting player choices on male options is pretty hilarious to me.
There's definitely some good ideas here, but the execution really killed it for me in a lot of ways. Aside from the cons you listed, my main cons are:
- Premium shop issues. The main one here is they made some big statements about not relying on tricks for monetization and being transparent, and then immediately used industry standard manipulation and charge very high prices for honestly mediocre quality cosmetics.
- The lack of multiplayer features. You mentioned playing as a couple, which I tried with my spouse, and it was disappointing on virtually every front except fishing and cooking. I was really hoping for a good multiplayer farming sim, but this just isn't it. Perhaps in another year or so, if it survives.
Those alone made continuing to play hard, but the general lack of polish put the nail in the coffin for us. I'm speaking as an alpha player here, the lack of progress in basic quality of life is disappointing.

Ngl I'm pretty shocked you found this game to be so fun. I was expecting a much different video.
I was so excited about this game but the devs have fucked up the community so much in less than 2 weeks of being released that I can't see this game surviving longer than the end of the year.
Here is why:
1. Scammy pricing in bundles proving bad faith from devs. (Which they kept after acknowledging it)
2. First update added pets wohoo right? Nope, they are just paid pets and they literally do nothing other than walk. So first update added just paid cosmetics.
3. No real multiplayer gameplay.
4. Not cozy at all. Players fight for resources, specially high tier ones.
5. Some NPCs shame you for how you dress or how decorated your house is. They shame you for not paying.
6. Literally no way of progress customization items, like unlocking or crafting or breeding or finding pets, clothes, etc.Not now, not ever, confirmed by the devs.
7. First in game event is a nightmare. The prices for the rewards are super high. The rewards don't match their picture-icon and the way to gain points is once again a grind agaisnt other players and strongly latency dependant.

I have rather massive concerns with it's business model. I mean, their idea of "full range of cosmetics" are basic things found in literally MMO, sometimes much more in the case of games with Transmog/Glamor systems (FFXIV I'd say is far easier to get plenty of customization options by comparison to WoW, but that's a different topic, the point still stands). So the Devs state: "You’ll have the full range of what we offer with things like skin color, face, body type, etc.", ah, so that's the "full range" of what you have to offer? I'd imagine what they offer in character creation probably won't be updated for a very long time or just end up in the cosmetics shop.
It's also so "cozy" when a Dev confirms this: "As we continue to support Palia for years to come, the paid outfit catalog will eventually outgrow the free one significantly-that’s the reality expected with this type of model.", essentially saying that this game will inevitably become a cash cow store with more content sold than earned. I hope they keep that "free to play" moniker long enough before they introduce a "premium pass" of some description.
But oh yeah, crazy amounts of cosmetics as a monetization method isn't a bad thing at all, but when your entire game revolves around "representing yourself" and also "comfy bullshit" language, it's gonna start to suck when players make rather sneaky comments about your "F2P" status. This happens everywhere obviously, hell Fortnite is a massive proponent of this. "Ohhh, look how cute this F2P house is!", so fucking "inclusive".

P2W games get frustrating as hell, and the statement that the pay to win aspect will outgrow the readily-available options is overall not great to hear. Of course certain cosmetics can be locked by monetization, but when more real life money is involved, a game tends to get elitist and “clique-y”. It’s a fair point
loved it, (your video and take). looks like fun. its interesting, how in some ways, even FF14 has taken on some of this sorta of quality for me. I gather a lot, make lots of gil, etc. that aspect has me looking at Palia, where in the past, I might not have due to lack of combat. i like daily treadmill stuff. Thank you LP!

after you get lvl 10 in all the skills the game essentially over just becomes Barbie's dream house the end game is just buying shit just to decorate your house

It is a super nice -something to do between doing other things- game but it needs some work on it's grouping and chatting systems, it's a pain getting into a group if it don't glitch out first

Absolutely my favorite game. It's true it's missing some group content to really be a mmorpg,but it is fun regardless.

Palia surprised me, came out of nowhere, nailed what it was doing and I love playing it on and off so far. Also since you like survival games I highly recommend "Matchless Kungfu", it does have some jank but the ideas it has are genius and something I wish every game had for "building your own story". Small dev team of 12 and they've done it masterfully.

Character creation is horrible. I Didn't get much past it before uninstalling. I'm a 43 yr old man...I don't want to play a smooth faced, skinny teenager. The game is gorgeous and I am 100% down for a non combat game but I refuse to play until they overhaul the player character side of things.
I agree with you I would also like to see a mount system too for faster travel

I just started a few days ago... I saw masculine customization features as well as characters running around with pets. The "male" body type is also more masculine presenting than what's shown in the video.

The character customization is the only thing I disliked about the game. Everyone looks southeast Asian, there are no pale skin tones, and the lack of facial hair was a buzz kill for me.

My impression watching this is that it is just a chore sim and there is very little multiplayer in this MMO. I looked up their planned monetization path and right now it says that they will monetize cosmetics only, but I have my doubts they'll really stick to that in the long run. This game is ripe to monetize the wait times and QOL improvements.
this game has a lot of issues and is extremely grindy. the cash shop is a total ripp off and extremely overprized. the quality of the cosmetics is not impressive either.
The problem with the mindset of "cosmetics only" is that this game is literally about collecting and decorating. This essentially makes cosmetic cash shop items p2w in a roundabout way. I'm pretty tired of people using the argument of "it's only cosmetics" because in reality, cosmetics matter a lot. No one wants to play a game looking like a homeless person. Putting cosmetics in cash shops also removes potential content from games and incentives to play, as those items could be rewards for actually playing the game.
If cosmetics didn't matter, cosmetic cash shops would not be one of the most popular and successful monetization strategies in modern gaming.
