  • Some yeas before Alan Partridge dreamt of a 'Round Britain in a bullnose Morris' TV program, we had the pleasure of the former Blue Peter presenter, driving round Britain....in a 1961 Morris Minor convertable.
His faithful companion 'Shep' was along for the ride.
This is the opening 'On Ilkley Moor bar t'at' tune arranged and played for brass band.
The Morris Minor, for those interested in classic cars, is still on the go, as it were.

Thanks for posting this. I am the owner of Nellie this Morris Minor after watching this series as a kid. After 40 years of looking I finally found her and now very well looked after and saved for the future. There are still traces of red paint on the bonnet, but she has been repainted Old English White. John Noakes and Shep, was a big part of my childhood, drove my interest in classic cars and the outdoors and shaped so many young lives. RIP John & Shep…..Nellie is keeping the memories alive. If only I could find someone with a recording of the series?

The series should still exist as it was shot on film and film was never trashed, only video, which was wiped and resused.
Perhaps Network DVD might be interested in applying to the BBC to release it?
They have released lots of children's/family TV programmes.

I'd wondered if you'd have kept the GWN red bonnet and boot or done a total respray.
I just KNEW it would still be going and the episode where he picked it up, supposedly a mess, was probably a well-prepared car by a qualified mechanic, just dirtied up at first.
In fact, that scene was probably shot LAST after the series had been filmed, starting clean and dirtied at the end, but tagged in on the front.
Amazing to think you own Nellie ( was that the name on the series? ) and had John and Shep riding in it some years before.
Not sure if you take it to classic car rallies, but if you do it will gain interest!
Nice to hear she's being well looked after.

I have several of their releases of old kids programmes and this ought to be put out on DVD by someone, if the BBC won't.

That’s great news that you have ‘Nellie’ and that she’s still on the road. I had searched the DVLA website and saw the car was still around and was now white and I wondered if the current owner knew of its history. Any chance you could film a short video of it and put on here? I’d love to see it. 👍🏻

@@LouishWaltz I seem to remember someone saying that the Morris Minor was already a BBC owned car and was used in a childrens tv show called ‘Rentaghost’ as well but I’m not sure if that was before or after its time with John and Shep - assuming that the info is even correct, of course.
Edit; found the episode with the Minor in it - czcams.com/video/_jfTgyl6NIQ/video.html

Post Blue Peter show for it's longest ever male presenter - loved watching this show during my summer holidays in the late 70's - great memories indeed, miss John and Shep - they were a class double act, gone but never forgotten.

      What a TV pair!
John had more guts than me to do stuff like climbing Nelson's Column without safety equipment.
I bet even Fred Dibnah admired his nerve for doing it.
As for Shep, no wonder poor John never really got over the loss of him.

@@LouishWaltz I couldn’t remember Nelson’s column episode, perhaps I was a little young. I just watched Noakes ascent however. omg, I got sweaty palms as I was watching that feat of bravery. I read that BBC didn’t even provide insurance to Noakes for such capers. Absolute respect for this guy!

It was painted originally in Smoke Grey. I do hope that for nostalgia it might be returned to the original smoke grey & the red bonnet & boot will be put back. Then at an mmoc rally with a plaque saying this was 'Nellie from Go with Noakes'
