Kathy, I am a white woman who may not have felt exactly as you but was certainly in the same feel. Watching two black american girls gleeful in their joy at seeing her and introducing one of the living testaments to how beautiful smart and successful they are and can become. How white people can look at their black counterparts and not see themselves is not something I have struggled with my entire life. I know hundreds of black women who are just as graceful and beautiful as Michelle. Although she is extraordinary, I believe her qualities are found throughout ordinary black women. I hope we get to see the time when introducing black women such as Michelle becomes commonplace.

This is how I was raised. I am 68 now and I remember everything I was ever taught. Of course we challenge and make mistakes, but I never made excuses, suffered from low self-esteem or thought there was something I couldn't do - knowing I could not do everything. That part runs so deep for me about men who tell their daughters that they can be anything, but are abusive/not supportive of the women in their workplace. The thing about it is that many people adore and worship her and although there are some who don't - they still have an opportunity to review content and not like everything displayed in that particular content. We don't get the opportunity to tell people what they should or should not view nor say because of our beliefs in the person or content being displayed. If people want to articulate something based on what they heard or how they feel then they should have a right to express it - not in mean nor hateful ways but rather in opposition of other views. We live in a country of freedom and it's okay to disagree with what someone is saying. It also appears that no is allowed to say anything in opposition to the positive comments on this feed and yes we all do have the freedom of speech and also the freedom of disagreement. Mrs. Obama is the epitome of all of the things you mentioned; however, we must also teach our children how to disagree respectfully and that there are times when we are not going to always agree and that should be okay.

I have a story of making my voice heard at work despite how nervous it had made me.
I remember how my heart raced as I was typing and sending a message that would be viewed by the higher-ups (and everyone else) at my workplace. Nothing catastrophic happened. In fact, whether they came to this conclusion due to my comment or whether they came to it themselves, leadership made a change that I suggested. Several coworkers expressed their agreement with my message.

Have to take notes...there are many lessons to learn from this amazing woman. This is former US First Lady is inspiring. Michelle Obama grew up with the intelligent mind, smart and a good heart starting at a young age. There are many quotes and lessons these two amazing women shared...so many wise words. 'Practice what you want to be someday". As a little Michelle, she learned a lot from her parents especially her mother and she emulated her parents of how they were raised and she applied them with her 2 daughters. "You are not raising children but you are raising adults."
Wow so I've been working with The NYC DOE with summer camp and start all my first days a series of ice-breaker questions, 1. What do you want to be when you grow up. 2. What do you like to do out of school for fun, and your favorite food. Often the boys love to talk about themselves and are clear dreamers, my girls were not as confident, not sure about what they want to do and really lack self confidence. I would totally talk to my girls about being amazing and they can do anything or be anybody we want to be!
