The testimony of an iconic design is when a 1950s watch looks just as good today as it did 70 years ago, add in the fact that the original watch has survived countless Polar expeditions. So today we wanted to explore a new release from Nivada Grenchen, their 35mm Antarctic watch. What exactly do you get for under 1000 dollars?

Nice looking watch.
I’ve been intrigued by Nivada Grenchen over the past year and I find this particular model very satisfying. Your photography is excellent and your critique is fair and to the point. Well done 🥃
That trend of smaller watches and reissues is great. I hope it goes into 2024.
watches became larger for a reason - more people wanted them and were buying them. Leave the smaller sizes in the past....
No.
This is a real looker. I own 2 Navada Grechen watches, the Antarctic Spider and the Super Antarctic with black dial. Love them both and they get alot of wrist time.
What a beautiful piece! I really wish more brands make watches to these vintage sizes
I thiknk it is a great watch. Perfect size, simple and uncluttered. Certainly gets my vote. 👍
Such a beautiful watch! I love it and I think that could be one of my next purchase.
Great video and thanks for sharing.
This just popped up on my instagram and I was thinking this watch is a stunner, opened up CZcams and here it is again. Very cool, thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching!
Nice watch. I have a 1958 Swiss Avia 35mm. I wear it, but not regularly as it looks very small on my 8.1" wrist . As for 35mm being the perfect size, it's perfect for some people but not for others.
Beautiful looking piece with genuine credentials .
Very nice, 36 - 39 is where all my watches live, but would love to try this
Gorgeous watch... If it was automatic and had a bit more water resistance I'd buy it tomorrow!
And if your auntie had bollox she’d be your uncle
A beautiful recreation! I have the Super Antarctic & it’s also a beautiful watch. I agree wholeheartedly the off white is the pick.👍🏼
Excellent watch. Excellent review.
Thank you for watching!
Very nice.
Btw I didn’t know you guys had a channel. Pleasantly surprised.
Thank you for watching!
Beautiful watch!
Beautiful.
Just ordered mine in eggshell. I have a 7" wrist and my daily watch is a 34mm Tudor date just from the 80's, it's so comfortable and easy to wear, especially in the winter with heavy jackets. I can't do large watches, I just feel silly wearing them. The most I'll do is 38mm dive watch and that's only in the summer when around water. Oh, and be careful of those big shiny dive watches when swimming with Barracudas, they love to take a bite at shiny things.
I so badly want this watch. Can't wait for it to be back in stock.
Great watch, right up my street.
Really like this
Thank you for watching!
Lovely watch I like it and looks great on your wrist but whenever I've tried a 36mm watch on it looks odd . So probably not for me that size.
I love the design so much that I was on the website immediately, where I saw it only has 50 meters of water resistance. I think an exploration and "field" oriented watch needs more than that. It's the same issue I have with the Hamilton field watches. 50 meters just does not scream tool watch to me. It is probably faithful to the original, but we have the tech to make things more durable. If they were going for the faithful reissue, they would have opted for acrylic instead of the sapphire crystal. Still a lovely watch to explore the office.
Well it is a field watch and not a diver. So you might get caught in a downpour or cross a stream, maybe fishing. Shouldn’t see anything close to 50 meters. Let’s face it. Unless we are deep sea divers 200 meters is waaay too excessive for just swimming.
@@jonboy8181well said. My thoughts exactly. However I would have loved acrylic
@@jonboy8181my main concern with 50m WR is inability to swim across the river or pond when I go exploring. 200m not needed, but 100m would make me buy it now. Whenever I go on vacation, I don’t want to have to remove my watch to shower, or sunbathe in the pool, or take a dip in 5’ of ocean water pretending to be mermaid man
@@philthyphil6662 I have had the Lorier Hyperion. It was a great performing watch and the acrylic was perfect however, the shape of the lugs just didn’t sit right with me :/ I had to sell it off.
I think the real problem is that most guys will find it too small after wearing watches 40mm and above.
Great reviews but I can't say the same for the leather strap that I received from Watch Gecko. I have a 7.5" wrist and the strap is much too short.
Doesn't appear to be for sale in the UK. Is this usual for a newly issued watch? Cheers.
I really like the egg shell version! May have to invest at some point (once my bank balance has recovered!)
Watch gecko straps are awesome! I’ve been using the straps for my Grand Seiko, Omega Aqua terra and Breitling gmt!
Thanks for your support!
Damn that watch looks good😬😬🔥
For the price, i wished it came with a display caseback option and a proven movement.
Of course, the re-issue is not automatic, yet thicker, not water resistant enough for any adventures, and thus somewhat of an oddity.
price please - and maybe some discussion of strap - 50 meters seems like a miss...
35mm? Yes, please! It's sharp-looking and traditionally sized. Well done, them!
Nice looking watch. But let’s not kid ourselves that this watch has heritage as you mentioned with the examples of the Explorer and Ranger do not. Yes, it’s the same company name, but only because 2 guys bought the rights.
They bought the rights and with that the heritage.
What is wrong with that?
@@carrerau7138 So money can buy heritage?
@@johnt2694 Of course.
I bought an old house in the countryside about 10 years ago which the seller had inherited from an uncle.
@@carrerau7138 Your example makes sense. How did Nivada acquire the heritage by buying the name and rights to use the old catalog? Are these current Nivada watches being made in a Nivada production facility? I’m pretty sure it’s a third party producing these watches. That to me, lacks any heritage. Anyways, that’s just my opinion.
Very nice design, but it's too small. 38mm is a minimum for me (I have 18.5cm wrist). Secondly this brand have issues with QC. Sadly.
best watch
I want to buy a Tissot PRX but can't decide which size should I take? I have a smaller, thinner wrist
I have a thinner wrist and I have not regretted buying 36mm watches. Just disappointed that most of my watches are 39-41mm. My go to for future watches is 36mm. I noticed, at last, that a number of watchmakers are now noticing the customer trend towards smaller watches. About time it is customer driver rather than being determined by the watchmaker.
@@jamesgreig8796 thanks for the answer,I will have to try them out in a shop. The thing is I just don't want the smaller one to look lady-like. As a fan of G-Shock I also think while they're cool, mostly they're just way too big and especially uncomfortable to wear underneath winter clothing
I really struggle with this. I think it looks fantastic, BUT the finishing reminds me of your ETA Geckota E-01, which I picked up a few years ago for £379. The Antarctic (plus import duty and tax) is 3x the price, which unfortunately makes it a hard pass.
What is wrong with the finishing of the Antarctic 35mm?
Sorry just one thing, the wrist model here @ 6.5 inches - that's 165 mm not 170 mm.
Metric system ftw
170mm rounds down to six and a half inches. The best thing to do, is to stop using inches.
Beautiful watch but weird it‘s not automatic when it was already in the 1960s possible to make a small watch automatic. I mean who wants to think about winding watches on an expedition when the watch is underneath thick clothes and gloves ;)
In the evening in the tent you usually remove your gloves.
I did it even on my last Mt. Everest expedition in Camp 2 right before the attack on the summit!
Lo trovo gradevole ,sotto ogni aspetto. Carrure compatta , indici applicati , sfere dalphine , e fondello chiuso con trattamento pvd . Nivada forse il migliore brand fino a 1000€ . Aggiungo Antartic diver ( no data ). Saluti
do you think on a black strap it would be elegant enough on a very formal suit?
If the original had an automatic movement, this one should have had one, too. I suspect they tiny crown will be a pain to wind every day.
Black dial!
If I were interested, I'd wait to see how the ( newly developed?) movement settles in and is reviewed in a year's time.
At least it's different to comparable alternatives.
What does it mean that the movement is a clone of ETA movement? Is it still a Swiss made movement?
That reminds me of a 1954 omega Speedmaster I once had! Looks like Nivada Gretchen is trying to build a back story !
This is a $450 watch. Period.
The only thing I dislike is hand-wind movement. It can be annoying for everyday use.
Really beautiful watch, but without checking the specs, I can feel the watch has
You’re right. He said it’s 50m when talking about the back. He kinda mumbles it a bit as a passing thought though. I had to back it up to make sure I heard it right. Honestly, I feel 50m is plenty for a nice daily, unless your profession is diving or a snorkeling tour guide 😂
@@dl7775 That’s a good point.
Looks good but it's just an ad. The watch isn't out yet. Plus I'd have to pay import tax on it so pass
I just can’t do a 35 on my big wrist. Maybe if my wrist was even 7 inches I could. But it’s not.
Beautiful but 50m WR in a "exploring watch" is lazy
Their Super Antarctic should be 35mm as well.
Same here just a little too late they’re all sold out
They will be back
No 38 mm is minimum 40 is most suited to me
Now that’s a nice watch just needs a date
my first 35mm like many people is the new prx. I was a little thrown off by it at first but now I love the size.
35mm minus the crown was not good for me. 33mm without the crown was much nicer. 35mm with crown was too big .
By the way things are goin, there will be a 30mm black bay in 2024....😂
Dress watch 36/37mm, sports watches 38/39mm, and dive watches 38-40mm. Anything over 41mm is crude. The Nevada featured is gorgeous
😴
Absolutely spot on, unless you have tree trunks for arms. Would change the rules for Panerai only, a 42mm. Panerai at 38mm is just not right.
@@bhupendraparekh6225 it's called evolution
No, 36mm is.
No.
It's a nice looker but it is just following the trend for smaller and retro which manufacturers will reverse as soon as the customer gets tired. They'll head back to bigger and more modern looking. As for its history then was then and there's no guarantee it would match the performance of the original especially with only 50m wr. There are watches in the sale on your website for £200 that would beat this and with more proven movements. Pass for now.
Well the good news is, once they head back to bigger and more modern looking, they'll reverse once more back down to smaller/retro, and so on.
Yea strange review
@@jirskyrjenkins1959 We're on the same page. 😊😊
watches became larger for a reason - more people wanted them and were buying them. Leave the smaller sizes in the past....
35mm is too small, maybe 38
35mm is the perfect watch size........ for a woman.
35mm the right size? Sure. If you're teenager or a lil lady.
Muhammad Ali is a lil lady?
large sized watches are for pimps
Tell us you are overweight, without telling us that you are overweight.
I’ll never understand the position that larger = more masculine. A larger watch makes your wrist look smaller.
@@nicholaschavez6245 Well now you made it about that. Nothing wrong with small watches really but they usually don't go well with most people. If anything, super high end Swiss watchmakers tend to make smaller watches out of tradition, usually non-tool watches (dress watches) are small because it's more about being jewelry, decor or luxury than anything else. Small watches aren't usually specced out or legible for that matter. So... IMO small watches usually indicate some odd traditionalist luxury thing more than anything else.
No not unless you have arms like a little girl nice watch to small
It's funny how these comments always come from people who can't spell or construct a sentence. I guess if they were smarter they would realise that their comments rather obviously reveal a likely insecurity about being overweight.
Nope, too small.
never forget, date just/ day date for rolex size for men as always been largest at 36mm for many decades while the smaller size for men is rolex date at 34mm , only 31mm rolex is considered boy size or unisex size for men...or women
Anyone have info on landeron? Looks like a defunct brand that was re launched ?
