- Nivada Grenchen brought great models from the past back to life. Watches like the Antarctic Spider and the Super Antarctic earned a lot of attention. Now the Swiss brand presents another timepiece: The Antarctic 35 mm, with the size of the original vintage watch from the 50s.
Watch of the Week.
This is a series of brief review videos about recently introduced wrist watches. Every Monday I give you in about 4 minutes an overview about style, specs, price and availability of a new timepiece. From 100 Euros or US-Dollar up to 10,000
It's not a commercial, so you will hear my independent and unbiased opinion.

Very refreshing to see modern watches in traditional case sizes. I hope this gets even more common. Options for everyone.
Smaller watches are officially back! I have an 8 inch wrist and still love this.
Very happy to see a 35mm watch! Keep them coming.
Nivada with another hit. They are doing a lot of things right. Thanks!
Excellent case size. Same case size must be used for their Super Antarctic 3 6 9 - that would be a winner!
I love it. Even my 200mm wrist wants it. White dial with flat oyster style bracelet. My time with beads of rice are over. Thanks Tim :)
Hi Tim, Nivada Grenchen got it right again with this interesting watch. The company has been doing things consistently well for some time now. My preferred color and strap option is the one at 1:28. A very beautiful piece. Thank you very much for all the work you do to inform us of what is happening in the industry. Regards from Chile!
A step in the right direction. Love it.
Hope they make a 39 mm version. Reminds me of an Omega Pie Pan Constellation. Great looking watch but to small for me.
Just discovered this one, I think it's awesome, certainly the eggshell dial. I have the Antarctic Tropical dial which is great, so I trust its little brother will join my collection before long.
Lovely. I think it would make a great gift.
Reminds me very much of my old explorer which was the limited model for UK market- 34mm, though i remember arguing with a watch dealer some time ago who insisted the original Explorer was 36mm. I still have the letter from Rolex confirming this 34mm model. Anyway, the Nivada is the closest thing i've seen to that Rolex. Stunning! Still can't decide which colour combo to go for..Arghhh!
Love the dial and love the size. I want one for me.
While I applaud that Nivada releases the watch in the original specs, personally I would have preferred it upsized slightly to 37mm, allowing also for 20mm lug width.
Definitely, 35mm is just too ‘authentic’ for me. Hopefully we’ll get these dials in a 37-39mm like you say.
Love the way this looks and the size, but wish it was automatic (as the original was, I believe).
Excellent! This watch is on order.
Wish they would release it in 39-40mm too, liking this indices
Hopefully they will never do this.
If you have not tried a 35mm, you might like it. Watch size can be mysterious. Big can look small, and 35 often is just right. Note: Many huge dive watches have crystal diameters smaller than traditionally normal men's watches (35-36mm). When the lights go out, manly wall-mart bling watches can be smaller than field-proven dirty dozen or a Nivada Genchin. Look up the watch Hillary actaully wore going up Everest, more like the Grenchin.
I featured this on my IG last week. It is a beautiful piece. Thanks for your insightful review.
Thanks Tim for another great review! ❤
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful watches, but they are just too small. If they make it 39-40 I'm in.
Looks great Tim!
Super cool pieces!
Love the content Tim! Appreciate their efforts here but someone should tell them to focus more on after sales support and QA practices. Bought a CASD once and a screw was loose in the movement. Took 3-4 months before I got a replacement back. Bought another CASD the second time, caseback was unscrewed, one of the chrono hands was set too close to the dial at a point where it was scraping the dial. Granted Ive had some horrendous luck with my items but never again from this company.
They should slow down with the pumping out new releases and focus on their customer service
if only these had see through casebacks!
Please keep the normal and more robus not-glass caseback as a option at least. Having a super thick heavy fragile watch when you are out in the field is a very signficant liability and full of problems. If people want to pay for show-back watches to not wear (maybe for a store's display case could be useful for customers to see), more revenue for Nivada could be great. But please keep making real watches to actaully use as watches on the wrist out of doors.
Le brossé est bien mieux que le poli bon choix ! Très belle, pour ma part une tank me tente bcp, peut être un jour...
I like it, nice review.
COOL!!! Great vid .....
It appears this is what the Alpinist line from seiko was supposed to be, a sophisticated watch for a skilled naturalist and scholar, tough but classically dress appropriate. But instead seiko put out mish-mash watches too thick to fit under a sleeve. And the gmt alpinist is designed for a monster truckathon or a metal concert, not a violin in the pine breeze of alpine wind. Let's hope Nivada Grenchin keeps this thread alive: At least one watchmaker should make a watch suitable for boffins in the natural world (not everyone lives in a trashy mosh pit screaming for bling and more steroids, but the screamers get all the watches made for them).
*Beautiful, a classic design, size and look.* *_How about the movement? This wasn't explored, just mentioned._*
I suspect that this movement is just an ETA 2801 or 2804 clone. I am by no means an expert but looking at the specs and design online I cannot see any meaningful difference in design between them. Probably another company trying to fill the impossible demand for ETA and Sellita movements, though it being a phoenix brand is appropriate for Nivada as well.
@@peanutarbuckle2879 *If the movement in this watch is an ETA copy, that's a good thing.*
I wish they had made a gold plated version but otherwise it’s very nice.
I was expecting you to be more positive about this. You have pointed out an element that had escaped my attention up to now, which is that lugs ending in a taper towards the strap seemingly at a slight angle. I think you called it a dovetail, but the potential problem with this are obvious, and it would have been easy to avoid. Odd choice! Personally I quite like the numerals, though I might have preferred something a little more formal to match the sparkle of the other indices. The vintage ones look quite funky too. I quite like the yellow lume shade too, especially on the white, to add a layer of contrast. The 35mm I'm less sure about, though I get why they did it. It may just get a little too small for me once we pass by 37mm, though had I been born a century ago, I'm sure this would have suited me more than nicely for size. Such are perceptions and zeitgeist. I don't like my watches big, but they needn't be dainty either. I'm not one for handwound movements when auto is an option, and it strikes me that it would have been with these dimensions. Ultimately, it's a steep price to take a punt on, and it reminds me a little of a review of another Nivada Grenchen where I also ended up concluding that it definitely draws me in, but then I keep struggling to understand why certain things could be adjusted for today's version and other, arguable, flaws have been maintained, as if creating perfection from a vintage template was a step too far. That all said, it's probably my favourite design of their releases so far. I could see myself wearing a piece like this.
A vintage piece without the lures and snares
The Longines Silver Arrow (1957) looks similar.
Nice look!
I would probably go for a baltic hms03 instead.
Love it!
That's a good looking piece 👌 for under a grand. Strap? Is definitely the way to go. The white dial is my favorite. I enjoy alot of different sizes being 36mm 38mm 40mm 41mm 44mm and a 47mm Seiko tuna Marine master
I own a few 37mm Seiko 5s and my 36.5mm Traska Commuter. I think what really helps the traffic appear and feel a bit bigger is having 20 mm lug width. If it is 18 mm it stands to make the watch look and feel much smaller and this watch, especially being only 34 mm with 18 mm, I just know it would be too small for me. It does look very nice however
I'm looking for a 35mm diameter with a thickness under 10, automatic movement
The best offering for a while and not a stupid price. Its not the size that counts.
In this case it is, 35mm is just way undersized for some wrists
Definitely Hero's in WW2 wore 34mm watches and you have these dudes today. With the famous "Oh its too small " or a female's size. They're probably the same dudes who wear a T shirt 4 sizes to big and think they look good LOL
@@lonewolfemcquade8133nah, 34-35mm is still a small watch wartime or not doesn’t matter which way you slice it.
Can’t work out why you’re trying to justify that smaller dimensions are somehow correlated to heroes either.. some people do get around with shirt sizes 2-3 times larger than yours and it’s perfectly normal. I think you’re overlooking the fact that the military would have had some criteria with regard to issuing a watch to the military, smaller size that is satisfactorily legible, for a generally younger set of eyes as well as using the least amount of potentially precious resources in a time of war and there’s likely many more reasons for it.
@@Nick-wh4jt I was really addressing the baffons. Who think every watch under 40mm is a female's size and every watch over 40mm is a man's. I don't care how anyone wants to spin it. 34mm through 39mm case sizes are men's sizes and it comes down to preference. You got alot of know it alls in this hobby. Who know absolutely nothing and love to try and make opinions "Factual " a 43mm case size doesn't make one more masculine than a guy who rocks a 36mm and anyone who views watches? In that way have some insecurities to deal with and need to grow up
@@IDKline I'm actually very tired of the size argument aswell
Would look great on my wife’s wrist.
Damn! Beautiful but too small
Just alittle to small for 7.5 in wrist
Love your review. I don't like the watch. Indices look too large. Angled lugs don't fit straps evenly. I don't like the original either. Can't win 'em all...
Bland dial material, and the closed case back, nope. Indices, no date and bor bracelet, yep! But can't get past the dial material / closed back, which is too bad.
Be carefull they ship from china and you have to pay VAT which increases the price a lot.
From Switzerland You would have to pay it too
@@piotrszmidel No, you would buy from european retailers. Furthermore nevada doesn't mention at all that their stuff is shiped and made in china. Nevada Grenchen looks like a swiss watch company from the outside which is very deceiving.
Very nice watch but not for me.
First!
A good looking watch, but I am a date person, so not for me
But is it a true watch of the weak?
Nice watch but awful name.
