I traveled to Hong Kong to view the most expensive gem in the world!
The world's most expensive gemstone was sold on Tuesday, April 4th, 2017 at Sotheby's Auction Spring Sell.
The Pink Star, a 59.6ct Fancy Vivid Pink, Internally Flawless, Type IIa diamond fetched $553,000 HKD (Hammer Price including Buyer's Premium) or $71.2m USD, making it the most valuable diamond ever sold in auction and the highest price fetched for any work ever sold in auction in Asia.
Hong Kong based conglomerate giant Chow Tai Fook was reported to purchase the diamond.
The diamond was described by GIA has one of the greatest natural treasures in the world.
This was the second time the Pink Star was offered in auction. In November 2013, a New York Based diamodn dealer purchased the diamond for $83m USD, but defaulted on his payment when his group of investors backed out.
Just for comparison, in May 2016, a 9ct vivid pink diamond was sold at Christies auction in Geneva for $18.2m USD, roughly 2m per carat. The Pink Star, a 59.6ct sold for $71.2 usd, or $1.19 usd per carat.

The Pink Star diamond seems to be not vivid in color too pale to be vivid not even intense. And it also probably fluoresce as well.
It didn’t have fluorescence, but it was a pretty low vivid that’s true. (But if GIA graded it intense pink it would have been a very strong intense)
Native Explorer then I guess GIA should upgradinhg their grading system coz vivid or intense the Pinl Star still looks like a light pink and even pale pink in some lighting condtions. Maybe vivid Arygle diamonds obviously looks different from GIA vivid. I don't know if that is the case also for orange diamonds if they come in low vivid or high vivid but I have a dealer who said vivid yellowish orange diamonds looks better than most vivid orange coz straight vivid orange seems to be too dark in color not as bright as yellowish orange. Also which is rarer Type Ia pink diamond or Type IIa? Type IIa seems to be limpid but their pink color is pale while Type Ia pink diamond color is highly saturated or obviously strong but they tend to be cloudy, hazy and not as transparent as Type IIa.
Its the cut: on face up, one can see through the side pavilions. A well-proportioned radiant cut would have made the color more intense.

I assume you mean the cost of certification? It might be more expensive but GIA has the highest standards and therefore overall you know what you get because you know what diamond you get. Other certs have lower standards and therefore you might think you get a “good deal” but if you convert the diamond to GIA standards you will see you pay more. Also, with the advent of lab grown diamonds it is more important to have a good cert. None. There are no blood diamonds for the last 20 years. And this stone came from the big mining companies. War associated with Diamonds used to come from alluvial mining (ie rivers) and that accounted for a small portion (less than -10%) of diamond mining production.
Native Explorer how do you know? The pink star was mined MORE than 20 years ago and human rights groups have accused de Beers of funding war groups whilst its sister ‘Anglo American Corp’ (interesting name for a South African based mining company) has been known to exploit oppressed miners during apartheid.
They can change the image all they want and you can talk as much as you please but for de Beers to get to the level they are in this industry, any logical person could assume the pink star is so vivid from the amount of blood indirectly splashed onto it. Foh

The pink star was mined by de beers in 1999 in South Africa. South Africa is not conflict or war zoned and diamonds from South Africa were never considered blood diamond.
Also, there are no blood diamonds anymore. Not since the 90s.
I am not well known about de beers practices and partnerships with other miners. I don’t work or make business with de beers. But it’s possible to exploited miners. But exploitation occurs in every industry.

About 60k Palestinian and 30k Israelis died in fighting since Israel was created. So following your logic, one can claim every industry in Israel or the Palestinian Authority is “blood industry”.
