  • Investigators from the York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking suspects and appealing for witnesses following an arson in the City of Richmond Hill.
On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, shortly before 5 a.m., police were called to a residence in the area of Lucas Street and Rumble Avenue for a report of a vehicle on fire. When officers arrived, a vehicle was fully engulfed in flames on the driveway.
Richmond Hill Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene and extinguished the fire.
    There were no injuries.
Video from the area shows a dark-coloured, four-door sedan park on the street, close to the residence. A suspect is observed walking up to the victim’s vehicle on the driveway, pouring an accelerant and igniting the fire. The suspect gets back into the vehicle and flees the scene.
Shortly after, video from a nearby commercial plaza shows a dark-coloured, four-door sedan stop in the back-loading dock area. A passenger in the front seat opens the door and throws what appears to be a red jerry can out of the car which then drives away.
The vehicle has since been identified as a black, four-door Hyundai Elantra that had been reported as stolen at the time of the incident.
Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity, or anyone with a video recording that captured any suspicious activity in the area, to please come forward.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7241, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or by leaving an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com.
