For all the highly publicised brushes with the law that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards would have in the late 1960s, it was the original leader of the Rolling Stones, Brian Jones, who was the group’s original bad boy-who lived, in the words of The Who's Pete Townshend, “on a higher planet of decadence than anyone I would ever meet.” In this video we look at the Brian Jones life story. When he was pressed into service to write the score for A Degree of Murder , Jones had to appeal to every musician he knew to "help " him come up with what little was produced. The half dozen or so musicians, session men, writers and arrangers who came to Brians aid did almost everything.

He only had memorized a handful of blues only songs on the guitar and he did not have the time to learn more because he had spread his musicianship so thin by dabbling in many other instruments in those three years.
Keith had to train and teach Brian all about rock music and how to play it.

He was a highly talented guy, but he was complex and difficult to work with. The perspective of time allows us to see both sides of the story- the power triangle with Mick & Keith was always unstable, so it was inevitable that they couldn't continue to work together. The great shame was that he never got the chance to rebuild his life and create new music. We'll probably never know what happened on that night in July, but it's quite likely that there were more people in the house than was tated in the official records.

The toxicology report says that by his blood alcohol level Brian had to have consumed seven shots of whiskey. Brian most likely just passed out in his comfortably heated pool, stopped breathing and sank to the bottom , The only surprise is that he lived there for that long and it hadn't happened sooner. Amphetamine binges countered by self sedation with whiskey were a common everyday practice for Brian. This time after doing it he decided to go for a swim.

Brian came from a very musical family, mom was a piano teacher, father played an instrument, and was jet propulsion engineer working on ground breaking technology.. The family was Welsh and very intelligent. Brian learnt to play piano via mom and clarinet to improve his lung capacity , having had croup , Brian suffered asthma. Then at age 14 , Brian was given his first acoustic guitar. Brian belonged to a couple Jazz bands predating the Stones , where he was a virtuoso , his musical prowess was already well honed by 1962.. The Rolling Stones name belonged to Brian , he named the band after Muddy Waters tune - Rollin Stone, Andrew Loog Oldham met them in 1963 during a gig at Crawdaddy club, becoming their manager. Eric Easton was original manager and liked Brian .

Jones did not get his first guitar until his *17th* birthday. Keith had been playing many different styles of guitar for eleven years when they met in 62. Jones had only been playing for three years and Keith ended up teaching him most of what he did in the band. The name The Rolling Stones was "owned" legally by the Production company and not by any one person.
Brian was a psychopath and an unpleasant manipulative jerk who had no creative abilities whatsoever. Musically he was a copyist and nothing more, impressing people with how he could play music that other people had written.

Wrong on a couple of details. Brian got his first guitar, an acoustic, on his 17th birthday, not his 14th. Brian had been playing guitar only three years when he met Keith. Keith had been playing guitar for ten years. This is why Keith quickly became the musical director and chief writer in the band ...
Keith understood music theory and he could play almost any genre of guitar music. Brian had memorized how to play only a handful of blues songs on guitar...he spent most of his time copying other artists harmonica parts and learning saxophone. Keith had to teach Brian everything about rock and roll music.
A bands logo can be copyrighted but NO ONE can own the name of a band.
As a song title, however Muddy Waters did have a copyright on the song Rollin' Stone that Brian stole.

Brian was given a more than generous severance package when he was fired from the Stones. When he died the checks went to his parents and after they died it goes to his surviving sister to this day.
No one was murdered for any reason an you are being over dramatic for no good reason just because he was famous. Heavy drinkers and drug users die every day from their fatal habits. Jones was just another one that day.
The only one who chose to kill Brian Jones was ...Brian Jones.

Sometimes I wish I had known Brian. I would've encouraged him to get off the drugs and find his natural high- making music on different instruments. I think Mick Taylor and later Ron Wood would've still come into the Stones' history. If he had lived in 2012, chances are he might've been invited to guest on their tour for 2 songs each night. Unless he needed the money, he might've not agreed under those conditions.

When Jones died he was deeply in tax debt. It took several years for his estate to pay off the taxes he owed. by the residuals and severance pay coming from the Stones organization. None of his six illegitimate children got a penny, even after the taxes were paid and the money went to his parents and then his sister. They, like Jones, all ignored his children's needs.
Just imagine how his children felt when the became old enough to realize that their father, who was a famous and wealthy rock star abandoned and denied them to grow up, most of them, in abject poverty.

I always considered Ian Stewart much more of a WORKING founder than, "I am the leader, shove my face into the interview microphone/camera and pay me more" Brian.
In an interview Mick once said they fired Brian because he always pushed to be the leader, but repeatedly missed recording and performance dates.
I felt much more sadness at the 1985 death of Ian Stewart than at Brian's last swim
BTW,, the world has was also saddened by the loss of Tina Turner who taught Mick to do so much more on stage than simply sing into a microphone and shake his goodies.

He asked Keith if he could join Keith's band and Keith let him in.

I was introduced to Keith and we decided to pool our resources, so with Stu from my band, and Mick from Keith’s we became the nucleus of the ‘Stones.’”* ---Brian Jones.
Jones did not recruit anyone who became a full member of the Rolling Stones with his stupid advert in the Jazz Newspaper.
He wasn't even a founding member of the Blue Boys , the band that changed their name to the Rolling Stones. Keith and Mick founded that band six months before Brian asked to join it.

They met in 1961 and became buddies. Then Brian placed an ad ,which is how they hooked up with Mick, who was buddies with Keith. That is how they met.And became friends. And then started the band that eventually became the Rolling Stones . The fact that Mick and Keith were in a different band at the time they met is irrelevant. He was an abuser of women and a manipulative self centered egomaniac.
He never cared how his drug and alcohol abuse impacted the people he worked with and who loved him.
When his ability to perform, tour and show up at recording sessions eroded due to his self indulgence in powerful psychedelics, pills and alcohol, Jones had written his own ticket to be sacked.
On autopsy his heart was enlarged and swollen and his liver looked like Pate foie gras. He had become increasingly dependent on his inhaler to keep his severe asthma under control.
