She must have been really pressured. I am glad she stood up for herself. It is easy to say that she had time to refuse the proposal, but the truth is many women do not get the chance to actually say no. Even if they do, they families will not listen.
You have every right to stand up for yourself but you have absolutely no right to involve others in your drama. The groom did absolutely nothing to deserve this humiliation. The girl could have simply filed an FIR if her parents are forcing her and moved to a women's shelter if she is so determined to be the owner of her life. You see the woman's struggle but what about this man? What will he say to his friends and neighbours? That he was stood up by his own bride for her boyfriend? He had his own life and image in society before this fiasco too.

They have no real say in the matter if the parents are strict and won't bother much if a good dowry is involved. For a woman to do this, she risks getting disowned and badly beaten. It's almost impossible to file an FIR and be successful in breaking the engagement. Doing this has a greater success rate. Unless you are well aware of the plight of young people in India who are under the clutches of their parents and joint family, please don't be too quick to sympathise with the groom's family. I know of men who have had affairs before and after the wedding because the families wouldn't accept his refusal. He didn't care about the bride. Didn't bother to do anything to break the engagement and looked all innocent on the of the wedding. Till date, neither the wife not the families know that he has a many hoes on the side. Some of the families are heartless. Also, mant times the girl is kept under house arrest to make sure that she does not escape. As long as they get dowry and status, they are fine. Many still don't agree to love marriages. So I wouldn't feel sad for them too easily. The groom's family can even threaten the family of the bride in some cases, leaving the bridal party in a fix. So many reasons why standing up at the last moment is the only way out...sometimes even that doesn't work :(
