Dr Sahib, Azad was one of the iconic personalities of the United India. A very rare combination of a literatus, a scholar, a philosopher, an educationist and a statesman.

@@Billumian47 The indigenous people of India have s sense of lsnd snd culture that goes beyond caste. In fact the western scholarship on India has tried to subvert Indian nationhood by frequently bringing up caste. By the way if caste implies social hierachies we know that Muslims too are prisoners of the same fault attributed to India. Indian Nationalism was predicated, at least in its early phase by a belief in a composite pluralism and even Jinnah as you point in your path breaking work embraced this. Why did that belief in composite pluralism get sidetracked. I think the rise of religious identity politics was one factor and the inability of the Congress to effectively combat it. Congress became a prisoner of its own rhetoric and men like Abdul Kalam Azad were exploiting Congress intellectual and ideological weakness for their own ends. He did not believe in the Sovereignty of India only of his Ummah and that went against tge stated principles of Indian Nationhood.

Great admirer of Maulana Azad here. However, with all my reading and listening to erudite people like you, still not able to figure out why his message of composite nationalism and keeping India united was so completely lost on the qaum, and they overwhelmingly rejected his message whether via ballot or by street veto. Only after partition did some of them realise their blunder, possibly when their loyalty was being questioned in independent India. His speech in the Jama Masjid precincts is a classic but so bitter and defeated does he sound.

Dr. Sahib, in one of your programs with Arvind Saharan, you have praised Nehru. I came across an incident involving Nehru and Maulana.
Bharat Ratan is the highest civilian award of India. Nehru wanted to confer it upon Maulana when he was PM and Maulana was education minister. But Maulana refused to accept it. He said that when we are in that position where we decide who will get the award, it is not correct to give it to oneself. (Words to this effect). Whereas Nehru, gave this award to himself being PM. You still feel he was great?
Nehru did not take the cue from a man of high integrity like Maulana. Why?

Dear sir, the contribution of Azad Sahab in rebuilding and reshaping of Indian knowledge system is immense and can not be calculated from communal sense. Whether he was Muslim or not. He supervised building of iits, Indian universities, and other cultural and educational institutions. It’s a very narrow issue that he was Muslim but sided with Indian national congress in freedom movement. He supervised the shaping of secular, liberal and nationalist minds in universities of that time. He was very proud of the fact that India had standard educational institutions in ancient time e.g takshila, Nalanda etc. these three leaders, Patel, Nehru, and Azad have contributed immensely to India in its delicate time.
But sir the question is that despite having this liberal outlook and progressive minds , why he supported the regressive demands of ulema of personal laws?
Second , why he allowed the liberal supporters of Hindu and Muslim nationalism in university highest offices for example in amu and bhu? although, he was awarded of thoughts and evil intellects they provided behind the scenes. Thanks

The historian like Ayesha Jalal is nothing but the hater of nehruvian ideals and values from core of her heart. It very astonishing that the bjp politician like Jaswant singh took the same line and blamed Nehru and congress for partition. That was nothing but one more diabolical and evil thought out attempt of Hindutva brigade to abuse Nehru. By doing that he was not showering his love for Muslim league and Jinnah. But, taking the side of Jinnah, they were furthering their agendas of Nehru ‘character assassination. Sir, I know them very, they are very cleaver. Hindutva brigade can go to any extent to portray Nehru as villain. Even they can pick up temporarily osma bin laden if it suits their agendas.
