      No it wouldn't. Your Patronus is a representation of your secret self, a part of you that is hidden but which is brought to light in extreme circumstances. Rarely does a Patronus reflect one's favourite animal or the animal most like their outward personality, and such a case reflect's one inability or unwillingness to hide their secret self and comfortability showing who they truly are. That's why I like the idea of the house mascots being their Patronuses and Ravenclaw's being a raven - one of Ravenclaw's valued traits is individuality and Rowena would embody that and not have a secret self and so her Patronus would be reflective of her personality, and the raven is the most intelligent bird.

    @Munchkin.Of.Pern09 Před 2 lety +130

    I personally think each one has different rules. Gryffindor picked Lion to represent his ideals and the tie-in with his namesake. Slytherin picked Snake because he’s a Parselmouth. Hufflepuff picked Badger because they represent her ideals, because their commonality would match her willingness to accept all students, and honestly because I think she’d be the type to think they’re adorable. Ravenclaw’s is a bit more complicated (which is in character for her); I’ll bet that her family were Falconers (Eaglers?), raising and training hunting birds. That would be the origin of a name like Ravenclaw - people still have the surname Faulkner with the same origin. (I think you talked about that in another video?)
    Edits: But the Patronus / Animagus theory makes just as much sense. Heck, my reasons could be part of why they would have the corresponding Patronus.

      I think that it is a very good explanation. I was also wondering (I am surprised that he didn’t mention it) that perhaps the animals represented their families. If the founders were noble (likely since they were educated and rich enough to make a school) they might have heraldic symbols from their families. Badgers don’t fit that well this idea but both eagles and lions are very common heraldic symbols and if the Slytherins can talk to snake it makes sense that their symbol was a snake.

      Yeah, probably patronuses, seeing as certain patronus tell you about their respective caster. Animagus would be cool, but I don't think so because it's never established that the founders are animagi; one would think that, if they were, this would be well known about them, seeing as that's a pretty big bragging point, going through the animagus transformation and getting such cool creatures.
      Either way, both thoughts would explain why 1. Ravenclaw is an **eagle** and 2. Hufflepuff is an European badger instead of the better known honey badger. Patronus does seem more likely, due to the Slytherin snake being so nondescript, seeing as most danger noodles look like other species of danger noodle.

And potion ingredients would stay fresh for longer periods in the colder cellar/dungeons of Hogwarts. Its highly probable, that Slytherin chose his quarters and the quarters of his students closer to his workplace. Also basilisk works way better as a defence mechanism than a weapon for attack on specific group of people (Muggle borns) mixed with others (pure-blooded) - that would be very ineffective or dangerous, too many of "his" people would die. While being the last defence, basilisk would be a weapon of mass killing: you put all your warriors inside the castle and make the basilisk go in front of the castle walls. Enemies are dead or petrified. Easy. Or it could be used on enemies climbing over the walls. Or, if the enemy is inside the castle already, you can use basilisk even more effectively - in the corridors (enemies need to look around very well in order to not fall into some trap, so they would look into basilisk's eyes for sure).
      Basilisk as muggleborns killer doesn't make any sense to me. Extremely ineffective, dumb and dangerous for other people. You would be able to kill much more people just by using hair pins (you can actually kill with them, it's not a joke). Or with a nice dagger. Or a sword. Or by a poison. Or by using magic! We're talking about magical school, don't tell me Salazar wouldn't be able to come up with a better idea than basilisk, he was very intelligent.

      He didn't hate them though, he mistrusted them because of the hate towards magic in their time. Because of the prejudice they dealt with at the time it is understandable at the time, but it should have been gone by the time of the series, since it took place in the 90s.

      @@Deerhunterjs "Slytherin’s discrimination on the basis of parentage was considered an unusual and misguided view by the majority of wizards at the time. Contemporary literature suggests that Muggle-borns were not only accepted, but often considered to be particularly gifted. They went by the affectionate name of ‘Magbobs’ (there has been much debate about the origin of the term, but it seems most likely to be that in such a case, magic ‘bobbed up’ out of nowhere)."

    There's one thing we're missing here: did the Founders actually choose these animals? Or were they already chosen by their families?
    Salazar, Rowena, Godric, and Helga all come from families whose crests are these animals. Though they are Founders, they all have families, too. Theh adopted and used their family's animals to create the Houses.
