I constantly hear people complain about the fact that y’all do a reenactment of the events but I actually like having the reenactments and visuals. It makes it easier for me to understand everything.
That's a weird thing to complain about. What else are they supposed to do?
I've never seen anyone complain about that. That's kind of the whole point of the show?
I’ve never seen anyone complain. If there was anyone that didn’t like a reenactment, they’d read a book.
They complain about previous episodes being reposted under different titles.
@@slagarcrue85 That I agree with
THose two pilots are true heroes, saving their passengers in the infamous and treacherous North Sea.
As they say in aviation, "All aviation regulations are written in blood", and sadly, it's going to take a plane going down due to a lightning strike with zero survivors before the British government or any other aviation authority takes it serious enough to take any action.
It's how it is virtually every field sadly, money is seen as more important than lives, corporations will cut corners where they think they can get away with it, and then people lose their lives due to greed and negligence, usually with the corporations getting away with it with just a slap on the wrist.
Between this and tik tok, the north sea really needs a PR person to give it an entire image makeover.
The noths sea knows what it is and what its about. It dont want no love, nor gives any either.
Absolute champion pilots . I was working on Brae Alpha later on 2017. This video explains me now why the flights delayes sometimes due to " trighering lighting clouds "
When the lighting says "F*** you in particular"
God's plan.

what a range of emotions I went through during this episode. Well done!
My thoughts exactly! Liked how they didnt show interviews with survivors untill they were showed. Movie vibe made it awesome imo
God bless all these people who risk their lives on these oil rigs so we all can continue to have our luxuries in our homes, cars and businesses.
I perform maintenance tracking for a helicopter company. One of the helicopters operates near the coast and so always has floats mounted to its skid tubes. Inspection of the float bags is performed at strict intervals to check for wear and leaks. The gas-filled cylinder and valve which inflate the floats also undergo regular testing. So the scene where the floats were inflated was really interesting for me. I have only seen the floats inflated when the helicopter has been sitting on the hangar floor as part of the inspection 😊
This show is so tragic but very well done
FINALLY a REAL new episode !! good one too. thanks !

@@Crysis8888 oh I didn't know about that one so you're telling me they are still doing rehashed regurgitated versions of old episodes? Damn what a disappointment. It's not like planes and helicopters don't crash anymore. I'm a student pilot and out at the airport there's bulshit going on every single day almost, minor stuff nobody got killed but you wouldn't believe the stuff that happens on a daily basis and there are fatal plane crashes pretty much daily they're just smaller. The world is a big place there's a lot of plane crashes every day and they just keep talking about the same ones over. It's because if they upload a slightly different version of the same episode they can make another $10,000 off CZcams ad revenue without filming anything new
How about elevated training on dealing with the locator beacon during an emergency?? That was a super almost deadly mistake.
too busy saving their smuggled whisky bottles
What a good Mayday video. So much learned about carbon fiber and heat/lightning. Great pilots.
Passengers: Highly bright visible orange suits...
Pilots: Highly dark blue and black hard too see suits...
Logic... fails here
The daughter’s words say it all. Disappointed that my British Government did not Make better recommendations re composites on aircraft and possible implications in aircraft safety to bigger aircraft manufacturers.
@hilaryolson4472 Unfortunately it's not just government that sacrifice our lives to save buck to line their own pockets
Wow. This was a great re-enactment . The skill and calmness of the pilots saved 16 oil workers that work on the oil rig platform. However the helecopter manufactors need to make the tail rotors and main rotor blades stronger with a better type of material that will not burn and explode when hit with high amounts of electricity from a lightening strike. Also the emergency rafts need to be desigened to not flap up against the helecopter during high winds and high waves. The dingy needs a EMEGENCY LOCATOR BEACON attached to parts of the Raft Dingy . So ships and emergency helecopters can locate a oil rigger crew floating out in the ocean. Also the Cargo doors need to be designed so there are no sharp edges any where on the door edges that could puncture any dingy or raft. They must install something on the helecopter doors to make the doors float far away from a helecopter so as not to cause any damage to any parts of a floating raft. Make the doors float or sink. Next : Have a type of blinking lights on the floating rafts. Or a mirrior to get the attention of flying helecopters looking for a crew floating around. Briliant work from both pilots to shut off the main rotor blade. This stopped the helecopter from spinning in circles . Glad the all survived . I flew allot on helecopters when I was in the Army. Some times accidents are pilot error and some times its mechanical . This time it was the type of material used in the tail rotor blades and main rotor blades. If this material is not replaced sadly this situation sadly could happen all over again. CARBON FIBER must be replaced with a material that can never be or cause this blades to explode or burn inside. Make them aluminum all the way threw the blades. Plus replace all parts on planes using carbon fiber . To prevent planes hit by strong amount of lightening to crash. REPLACE CARBON FIBER. To save lives.
Many of the suggested remedies have been done. ELTs on rafts and ALL safety gear replaced and thrown away when expiration happens. Even survival suits which are very expensive. Too many accidents resulting in tragedy have happened and will continue to do so in the N. Sea. Safety regs are written in the blood of the lost. Having ridden them in the past for work, I never felt comfortable aboard choppers. Too much can go haywire.
Well yone fair helicopters only fly by beating the air into submission as opposed to aeroplane's that actually fly.😂
They said in the video that the door was designed to sink but didn't for some reason.
You can’t assume that carbon fibre is going to have the same properties as other materials.
I worked in the North Sea 2008-2013 travelling with Bristow/on helicopters. I still have ptsd in 2024 from the emergency training nevermind the rest of the procedural stuff around such flights. It really made me think I’ll be grateful to die on land, just please not falling out of the sky or in the sea.
Hi, I want to work there
Really hard to find a good documentary these days, but this narrative and visual depiction is fantastic! Thank you.
Oh huh - would you look at that! Immediately assuming it’s the Pilot’s fault AGAIN!!! Yet voila - it WASN’T AGAIN
Pilot error is usually suspected first because statistically, thats the most likely culprit iirc.
Human error is the most common cause of aircraft accidents. Not just pilots but maintenance too. So it's common for the pilots to immediately take the heat until it's proven there's another cause.
This is the most informative aviation video I have seen.
Rogue waves are terrifying enough...
Now we have "rogue lighting"...
Incredible skill displayed by the pilots...
Not a single life lost...

In ‘82, I took a new tugboat from a shipyard in the Gulf of Mexico to Stavanger Norway. I thought we had a rough trip across the N. Atlantic until we arrived in the North Sea. Everything you’ve ever heard about the weather there is probably true and some. things you haven’t heard also. They offered me a job on the boat but I took the silver bird home where the weather makes a bit more sense. If you’re young and dumb and tough, go for it.
You went from gulf of mexico to norway. WOW. Long trip in just a tugboat
@@geddon436 not at all. They burn 5000 gals. per day underway and carry 150,000. Working in the oil patch is a real adventure and I’d do it all over just to sail again with some of the characters I’ve met while doing so. Seasick is a state of mind to a large degree.
Arm chair experts always lay the blame on human doings . Why would any or both pilots crash a perfectly flying helicopter to ditch into the North Sea. It is good to see they got quickly to the guys in peril and well done to all concerned in this rescue
I've never seen this episode. Excellent!
Great job man! Awesome video, all the graphics and animations are much appreciated and noticed! Keep up with the great content, you did great with this one... Because I had never heard of this disaster!! I know of Lake Peignoir (Probably spelled that wrong, But they actually drilled a hole into an abandoned mine that inhaled everything) But never heard of this
I trust the Captain received more than just that one “Thank You” card.
All of them are such a courageous people!
I cried watching
Great documentary
Mother Nature ain't no joke!
What blew my mind is that one single lightning strike that took down the aircraft held more voltage than all the power/electricity that’s delivered within all of the US combined.
I'm kinda baffled that they thought lightning couldn't hurt a helicopter.
nah helicopters can dodge lightning if you are a good enough pilot /s
Of course. They did an autorotation landing after disengaging the rotor from everything.
Because 99.9% of the time it actually can't, they're designed to withstand it. But this was an unusually powerful lightning strike.
"We lose radio signal due to the curvature of the Earth." Take that Flat Earthers! 😜
😂
We'll make up a conspiracy for that😂😂 jp
yeah, there are artificial jammers every 30 or so miles in grid covertly deployed by the conglomerate of governments :D
Seriously?
No..
How about show on oil rig disaster you guys do a good job
So this raises the question what does the CAA think happened?
So the only factor saving everyone on the chopper was the flying skills of the pilots. The chopper was improperly designed or redesigned. Fiberglass is not good when flying through lightning.
good work
Well made show.
I love survival stories ...
All ongcians should watch it.
this is like watching a bad horror movie
Badass pilots ❤
Better quality than Netflix has to offer. So that I think again not to pay for Netflix.
All our rafts had the beacon/radio in the raft its self. along with flair guns and emergancy items.
How much chard it would be to control
Just imagine flying something is not easy 😮
Happened the same year the Breitling Emergency went on sale, 1995.
When Murphy's Law "Keeps It Real"😳🤨
Imagine going thru all of that and at the end your boss is like…… this is your fault and you’re lying about what happened. I would quit on the spot
"it can not sink......" Thats what was said about the titanic
Card at the end topped it all.
Do they not give exact LL coordinates with the mayday call? That would make locating them easy
Also, with helicopters being top heavy, they should develop a heavy anchor to deploy with the floats, to help keep them right side up.
they did on the working weather radar display (it's dish is at the front it's unlikely it failed) so I cant understand why they didnt include it in the mayday after a/c ID panic
Managing an emergency situation in an aircraft is very stressful, so forgetting details is very common. As a matter of fact, in many emergencies, trained professionals even forget to say mayday..!
And as regards the anchor idea, that isn't really a good idea, since weight is more or less the opposite of what you want on a helicopter. And besides, it stayed upright on its floats in a storm, so the design worked well in that regard :)
yay re-run
The pilot is the original Sully Sullenberger
i beg to differ, the original sully would be the captain on Garuda Indonesia Flight 421.
''On January 16, 2002, the flight encountered severe thunderstorm activity during approach to its destination, suffered flameout in both engines, and ditched in a shallow river, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.''
WOW guardian angels for sure!!
didnt someone design a deployable parachute to slow rotation in the event of tr fail? probably would get tangled up in the mess but nice idea at least stopping the spin dryer effect somewhat
Those ships cost 1000s per hour to operate, that has got to be even more in bad weather, I can only imagine what that return trip must have cost the company. Just to drop off 4 guys. I'm sure the bean counters were none too happy.
didnt they have the lat long on the weather radar display?
One small detail: once the distance is marked in Kilometers, later on in Miles. That's strange.
if the expert is skeptical, why don't send them to feel it in real condition lol 🤨 some people only know the theory not the reality, just because you smart doesn't mean you can't believe what people say, at least think about the posibilty
Can they possibly put in a lightning aura that would attract the lightning like a lightning rod which could discharge when they land?
It seems like a crazy thing to keep using that product if they can’t redirect the lightning….
lightning rods dont really attract anything they act as part of a low impedance electrical circuit to channel lightning to ground and vice versa and its installed from top to bottom on buildings, so on a helicopter there is nowhere to mount it as the currents it passes are too high and the helicopter is airborne so you would need one underneath as well connected by a metal strap or the aluminium body but as the main rotors are the highest point due to the complexity of the rotor pitch angle controls you could never make one that's safe and lightning is more complex than just simple "cloud to ground", check "leader stroke" in google and NWS (US national weather service) pages on it and find out about how complex lightning strikes are.
Just a question: as the helicopter is flying underneath ATC's radar - were these helicopters fitted with transponders, which might have helped track this one? Thanks!
They were beyond the radar's reach since they were flying through a dead zone that wasn't covered by the radar waves, as mentioned in the video.
@@verify95Yes, thanks! I thought a transponder's signal would have reached through anyway.
They made a movie about this i watched it too
28:02 50 degrees centigrade for hypothermia? seems a little high or am i missing something? someone please correct me if I am wrong!
I think they mean Fahrenheit
He said combined temperature of outside air temp and water. I suppose being wet drastically increases survivable temps.
I can't believe everything that's supposed to keep them alive doesn't work or is damaged. Plus, you guys who just didn't know what to do. Maybe you need to make sure people are paying attention to the safety video. Maybe also check safety gear on a regular bases.
It has been said that safety rules are written in the blood of those who have perished. Unfortunately, this seems to be the case although luckily not in this case. Small details are learned from accidents, fatal or otherwise, and implemented where necessary. Some of the largest parts of the engineering exam for vessels are safety alone.Keep survival suits clean and ready at all times.
Re-upload from "The Tragic Story of the Lightning-Struck Super Puma | Mayday: Air Disaster"??
30:03 44:20 his toy helicopter also lost a propeller from the rotor
Most of their survival suits are leaking freezing water...
They're not even in the water yet... And the suits already fail badly? Weren't they designed to ... keep water out...?
This episode really makes you question a lot of things...
Maybe someone can help me but i thought things struck had to be grounded to sustain damage?
Somethings in the North sea that Humans mustn't know of
Another story of people not paying attention to weather models
Simply put those that refuse to accept those findings in a Plane and let the fly over a stormy Nord Sea...

Thankfully everyone was ok, but this one was hard to watch. All those at days and never once were their coordinates transmitted or requested?! Nobody thought to just reach over and push the door away from the raft? They were still tethered to the helo, why not go back for the beacon? They had the long rope with the raft, why not tie it to the short one before cutting it loose? Given that they solely transport over open water, why do they not carry a handheld marine vhf?
How did nobody consider the implications of Carbon Fiber being a conductor? I’m not an expert, but that was the first thing I thought when they said “how can this happen?” and showed the splintered blade. In fact, I don’t think the metal edge they kept mentioning even matters. I saw a splintered carbon fiber fishing pole that was struck while in a rod holder on a boat once.
Finally, if they supposedly use these to make regulations to make things safer, why don’t they regulate requiring an EPIRB on the life rafts and suggest a Marine vhf. I have a built in on my boat and still never leave the dock without a waterproof handheld as backup in case it fails or I have to ditch. For less than $100 it’s just too cheap not to carry just in case (certainly a whole lot cheaper than those Helly Hansen survival suits!)
