Margaret Thatcher's victory in the Falklands

  • Margaret Thatcher is dead aged 87. Here we look at the event that arguably secured her a second term in power - the 1982 Falklands War. Retaking the Falkland Islands was the defining moment in Margaret Thatcher's premiership and is believed to have consolidated her nickname, "The Iron Lady". The war waged against the Argentine military also contributed to her winning a second election with a landslide majority in 1983, a year after the war began.
    The war officially began in 1982 when Argentine forces invaded the British territories of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia in the South Atlantic. Recovering the islands would require a substantial military operation, so Mrs Thatcher dispatched a large naval task force from the UK. It was the biggest UK naval operation since the Second World War.
    Nearly 30,000 people sailed south, including ships, two aircraft carriers, submarines, aircraft and ground troops. She said afterwards: "If anyone had told me at the beginning that we should send 27,000 men and over 100 ships, I wouldn't have believed it."
    Throughout the 74-day conflict, Mrs Thatcher wore black, and constantly spoke of "our boys".
    "Everyone was at risk," she said. "We were always worried about the vulnerability of the supply lines especially. When it was all over there was a tremendous sense of relief. A feeling that whatever problems I have to go through now, at least I won't have to go through that terrible period when every time the phone rings, every time the door opens, you worry."
    The following January, Mrs Thatcher visited the Falklands, being greeted like a saint by the islanders. Report by Mark Morris.

One of the issues argies had is they don’t have ten experience of the British in fighting wars and some of the best trained fighting soldiers in the world.

Do people speak Spanish in the Falklands? They don't. Do people use the 'Argentinian peso' over there? They don't. THE CULTURE IS BRITISH. So, I wish they would stop making unreal comments. Winston Churchill’s strategic and brilliant intelligence in leading lead Britain to victory, without him Britain and the rest of the world might be speaking German you twat!

The Falklands are British and are recognised by the UN as being British. Britain have the 4th most powerful military on the planet and the best trained troops on the planet. We don't even need to talk about nuclear weapons because we can destroy Argentinas armed forces with just our conventional forces. By 2020 the UK will have 2 Supercarriers in service able to project British power anywhere on the globe. Argentina have no hope of seizing the Falklands permanently because us British are too powerful for them.

      pablo tacain resort to calling someone a Nazis because you can't back your statements up with facts. a better word to call me was an imperialist. it's not a matter of where the islands lie it's a matter of who lives on them. the citizens of the Falklands are British not Argentine and they have had a referendum under United Nations rules declaring their wish to remain a British overseas territory. with the election of Donald Trump relations with Russia will more than likely improve and currently British relations with China are very good. if only Argentina was still a colony. we've beat your Spanish masters countless times and we've beaten you with ease. Britain is a country is a country with a history of resilience and strength. Argentina is a country with a history of being beaten by Britain and a country that cries to the international community who quite frankly don't care because they'd rather have good relations with Britain than help you. Finally if South America was to be left in anyone's hands it would be Brazils but again Britain has no intention of leaving the Falklands so deal with it.

Sounds like Imperialism if you look at it...

    • @joshbroadhurst212
      @joshbroadhurst212 Před 7 lety +8

      pablo tacain Britain don't want it for oil. The only reason we keep and defend the Falklands is because they chose in a referendum to remain an overseas territory of the UK. The moment they reject British rule is the moment Britain gives them up. I'm sorry if Argentine rule is so unattractive to them compared to British rule. The majority of nations side with the UK in this dispute so instead of being bitter about the fact Britain control the Falklands and we kicked your ass during the Falklands war, grow up and deal with it instead of singing the praises of a 4th rate power in Latin America thinking it comes close to the UK. News flash the UK is better. The Falkland Islanders know it and so does the rest of the world.

    The sad thing is, that a brutal Argentinian military junta started this conflict to stay in power. A junta which has murdered many more Argentinian civilians than military personel was lost in combat with the UK.
    Why most Argentinians saw the military aggression as some sort of patriotic enterprise is a riddle. Not only was it started by a brutal and illegitimate government, but Argentina's claim to the Falklands is no more reasonable than their claim to say, the Maldives would be.
    It is true, that the Falklands being British is the result of colonialism. Yet this is utterly meaningless, as Argentina is also the result of colonialism. And so is each and every other country in South and North America.
