If I recall correctly slaves are just generated out of nowhere when they are imported. Also no matter where you conquer the existing pops do not become slaves. The game is not that granular

I saw a video elsewhere that had some French or Spanish Catholic pops become slaves. There was some kind of exploit where, as a Great Power, they purposefully lost to some of the Decentralized African tribes and those tribes got to take over actual European land. And those Decentralized tribes was where slaves were originating from, and they ended up in the New World.
This was a while ago that I saw this, so I'm not sure if this got changed in a different version.

Slaves reproduce naturally like any pop. Under Debt Slavery something like 1/3 of your pops under 10 wealth will be enslaved. Under Slave Trade, your nation will get "migration" of slaves from states that have Debt Slavery (this is to simulate the slave trade) into your nation. Legacy Slavery relies on natural reproduction of slaves. African Nations start with Slave Trade and thus "export" slaves via the hidden forced migration mechanic to countries with Slave Trade.

I remember one time I played a pro slavery America in the game while also heavily colonizing Africa. After a while the Plantation Owners group of all people demanded that I ended slavery.
After looking into it I found out why. I built so many farms in my African colonies that the super majority of the people in the Plantation Owners group, and largest party in the government, were Africans.
Also, the sources of slavery were colonized by anti slavery nations, and the wealthiest in the nation would not pernit themselves to be used as slaves. I laughed so hard at the situation. Talk about alternate history.
