Soundcloud Rap as a genre changed hip hop history forever. Unfortunately, "soundcloud rap" today is about as relevant as it was when it first started. This is the rise and fall of soundcloud rap.

There's a 15 year cycle. An artist or style gets big. The gatekeepers and old heads hate on it. The generation who grew up on it grows up. That generation becomes the new gatekeepers, taste makers, and artists. That artist who was previously "poser music" 15 years earlier is now viewed as legendary in that scene due to nostalgia and what's popular in the scene currently being heavily influenced by it. Then that generation grows up to be grumpy old gatekeepers only to say things like "kids these days" and "back in my day we had real *blank*"

The whole SoundCloud era of 2014-2018 was vital for how the direction of the hip-hop scene was going to go, especially the present day. So many influential artists came up during that time & the underground scene rn can be an example of how that whole generation changed the game as we know it

I agree... It's crazy if you look at monthly Spotify listens. Juiceworld and X both pull 30 million monthly streams.
X almost 4 years after his passing is still in the top 100 listened artists and MOST of his music (imo all the good emo/screamo stuff) isn't even on the app...
Juiceworld has collabs with tons of artists, has a ton of music on the app and still has music being released that sounds finished.
X barely has any collabs, most of his posthumous work sounds unfinished and is unfinished, and he still pulls the same ears regardless... 17 and ? Are actually giant in terms of the ears they pull. Two albums basically carry 30 million monthly listens, which is why they released such unfinished work. Vice city just dropped so others are certainly coming, I don't think X as an artist will ever die out which is insane because he's been gone for so long...
Considering the abuse allegations, the constant jail time, the controversial nature of X outside of being an artist, X literally carried the movement, and the fact remains despite people's love or hate for him, his death cemented him just like in his own words towards Kurt Cobain "as a character forever". X unironically got his goal of achieving legendary status through dying as a character. For better or for worse atleast he got what he wanted out of this life in the end.

However imo X's greatest works were his soul songs. Try listening to his catalogue i wont lie there's a lot of trash but every artist is like that even Michael Jackson. In my opinion the 1st Soundcloud wave wasn't palatable enough for the mainstream audience, but it influenced the kids that were going to become the future artists. The 2nd wave kinda warmed people up to new sounds and new ideas but the quality of the music still wasn't there and the audiences weren't that big. Then the 3rd/4th waves of artists were the ones that became mainstream because they had the right conditions, Soundcloud had a lot more users by now and there was hype around underground artists. For example think how Raider Klan influenced Yung Lean who in turn influenced Peep who then influenced Juice WRLD.

I was 20-21 during the 15-16 peak and I saw so many of these artists live. The energy was something I haven’t seen anywhere since it was euphoric. Even tho my life was terrible at that point I still feel nostalgic for this moment in music. Being the same age as those artists it’s amazing to see Denzel and the like grow into matured artist especially as life has changed with them. The youthful rage and party music gets replaced with more developed introspective stuff and it’s really cool to see that.

I honestly believe there’s a new wave of something waiting in the shadows. Something always pops up, we’re in generation of social media exposure . There’s plenty of music, inspiration and Creativity left in the Music world waiting to be heard. Right now everything is just moving too fast.

Man I’ll related hella I live in south flordia Deerfield was a 30 min drive where X died I probably was just becoming a freshman or in the 8th grade never cried over a rapper till X not even at my grandma funeral I don’t really be crying like that’s unless it’s something so personal just listening to Kodak X and the other rappers from the SoundCloud era like smokepurpp post Malone just made me love life I started to smoke weed in the 6 th grade I was also a pretty bad kid selling drugs robbing doing home invasions just being a jhit in flordia iykyk 😂but when I just listen to these rappers made me feel happy even being at a young age I felt depressed cause my life wasn’t the same from the other kids in school when I moved out to north flordia being used to being a melting pot of races I was now in area where it was mainly wealthy whites so I felt out a place even with their kids my age but all the music from the SoundCloud era made life’s enjoyable those endless summer nights where it felt like a weeks worth of events being in love with my middle school crush those where my happiest days of my life from 2016-2018 all my friends I made during that time I imagine was never leaving my life but slowly they did first it was my crush I was her best friend we had a fight which leds was not talking till my junior year during those year after when X died my high-school years fell in streets hard I think it was cause I didn’t have Mia in my life no more she was the one who kept me ground from crashing out truly she was the only person I loved but for her she forgot about the promise we made abt forever being in each other lives now it was just one sided I would keep track of her n I what heard that she became a “hoe”but I know she was just looking for love n she kept choosing the wrong guys who would just fuck n leave then talk abt it n I knew sum of them they be bragging about in my face without knowing I loved this girl she would always be at party’s I would see her sometime just for us to look each other in the eyes for a second they we would curse each other out 😂 they moments where I thought she was fucking with me but my pride was too big cause she the one who broke my heart in which made me turn to drugs the street life a life without her it not like I couldn’t get me another baddie but I’m a Nigga who hates people only I few a I care for n I was the man in the city for my. Age so fucking was easy never dated someone tho to make this short we reconnected again in junior year the year I went back to school I basically drop out of school after middle school just didn’t go only for my exams the first days we would look at each other n she always gave me a stank face but one day I’m lost in the hallways n we passed each other she look at me n say “why are you staring are you lost or something “ n I say yea I actually am then her whole attitude changes n become the sweet girl I remember in middle school with the pretty smile ever she help me to get to class n then she gave me a ride home after when she saw me asking people for a ride when we get my driveway we park n start talking idk how long but I remember at end she said that we almost talked for 2 hours just catching up and laughing at our memories she told me that this was the longest she had ever talk to a guy before without they trying sum n I don’t remember what I said but at this time my emotions where so mixed up I didn’t know how to feel happy or mad since she abandoned me before but after this moment we was together every day for half the school year then I got jump by 10 people n almost kidnapp I had knife wounds. Guns where involed I felt like this made her look at me different cause when I was with her I was sly n just being normal not acting like a demon like I was know as but we kept talking it’s new year n we where texting n she was talking how sad she was this year n how I made her happ n that this year gonna be the year she becomes happy n I ask her if I can help her do that basically asking her out I didn’t know that she was in love with someone at this time a popular football player who made feel like she was so she said no but always saying how much she love me n that meant a lot to her this just made me so depressed I Block her on everything even tho I didn’t want to I remember my snap kept getting banned so I had to make new ones every time she added me but I was mad n sad cause the week after she got with the football player so I stop going to school after missing so many days I got kicked out after Christmas break n we had stop talking completely in which I became bad on pills n started trapping hard so good dat I caught a fed investigation so my mom made me flee the country till it clam down 6 months pass till I go back to flordia by then it’s our senior year this year up I dint go back to school even when the principal told me to return cause of her being there she jump by the football player then started to date thus another guy she looked happy like actually did this time I wasn’t happy but I was at the same time even her brothers n father told me that’s this guy actually cares for her which is great but now I realize that’s she gone forever I’ve told we gonna get back together when we are older but at that point I would say no cause the damage is already gone my addiction is at a all time high always depressed I didn’t know where to start my life n now I posting my life story on the comments in CZcams I miss the old days of 2016 n 2018 lost X n her at the same time basically n for her to reconnect with me acted like she really did care just to abandon me n get a new. Nigga is crazy I’m still recovering every relationship of mine is toxic from the start cause I only loved 1 person n the new people are just strangers who hurt me in the end so it doesn’t hurt as much if I didn’t really loved dem in the first place I know I’m a get over this idk when tho I love u all have a bless day n sorry for posting this 😂

Bones and Yung Lean had such a profound impact on me as a troubled teen back in 2014-2015. Saying that they had an impact on me feels like an understatement. I’m honestly very happy that I got to see SoundCloud rap evolve through my teens and into my early twenties. I remember people talking about Lil B when I was 14 in 2011, and I could have never guessed that this was just the foundation for what would become such a huge genre. It makes so sad that so many talented artists died along the way, and it definitely feels weird getting older while they will essentially remain the same age forever. Artists like lil peep and x left such a huge impact on me later on. I could have never guessed that so many artists that I was listening to like peep x juice 6dogs sketchy etc in 2017 would pass away so unexpectedly. Now that we’re in 2022, I feel like we are experiencing a fallout as a result of this gigantic crash. I honestly felt like I grew up with these artists, and although I’m really happy to see artists like Yung Lean getting legendary status, I’m also sad to see it go. SoundCloud rap left such a huge imprint on me, and honestly I don’t think I ever want to let that go.
