My Keens literally one week past the warranty the stitching blew out on the left shoe alone the outside of the toe. From the very front to about 1/2 way down the shoe.... just over 1 year old. I was happy with them as I had finally found a shoe where the sole would last. It seems like shoe manufacturers are making the soles softer and softer and they wear out in 3 to 6 months.
I am not a woman. I have winter shoes and I have another pair that covers the rest of the year and that set is Keen. I live at 8500 foot elevation so winter runs from October to May and during that time I wear my Solomon Snow Tripp II boots. I have had those boots now for 10 years. No one stitch has pulled and the soles have not worn out.
Shoe manufacturers are making shoes that last less then a single year because they want you constantly buying new shoes. I am sorry but spending >10 bucks a month for the rest of my life to cover my feet is absolutely crazy!!!

Love the fit, but all 3 pairs I've had, have had issues... The first pair had lace loops break within 3wks, took those back to REI and returned. The replacements for those had the rubber separating in less than 8 months. I decided to call the manufacturer and was advised I can either mail them back to be repaired or I could do the repair myself by using a recommended glue called barge cement. I chose the latter and it seemed to work for a while but eventually separated again. While I should have learned my lesson, I bought the Targhee IIIs figuring w the new style, they would have addressed the separation issues especially after so many had commented about it. Well, in under a year I had multiple separation points on both shoes. While I cannot speak to the other models within the Keen line of hiking boots I can speak to the Targhee's and these are the only boots I've ever had that have fallen apart while still having plenty of tread left. I have never had issues with any other of the shoes or boots that I have bought ever, and although I love the amazing fit, comfort and styling I cannot buy these again... ever. It's a quality control issue that appears they're not taking seriously which will lead me to someone who does ...

Good review, came to see if the Steen had the foam. That dang foam is a problem, I've had several pairs of Keen Targees and the uppers are great, but the rubber comes off the foam, and then they are junk. Been wearing Keens for 6 or 7 years, but disappointed in the soles

Yes another great shoe review! I just got a pair of the Steen vents about a month ago after seeing them at an Academy Sports. Grabbed a pair after getting tired of wearing out my Asics so quickly with work and decided it was time to get another pair of leather Keens as my last pair of targhee 2s were awesome and lasted for ever. My cheapness had prevented me from picking up another pair immediately after my last ones finally wore out. Man I had forgotten how Awesome the toe box room is in the traditional designed Keens. I had tried on a pair of the Targhee 3s a while back but they weren't as roomy as my 2s so I passed at the time due to that and the cost. But Academy Sports had the Steen vents for $80 so I picked them up. I wear and work in them every day building outdoor backyard structures like gazebos and playsets and man they are holding up well. Now that I see the come in a waterproof version I might pick another set up for the fall winter. Thanks for another shoe review! Hope Keen gets the Targhee 3 glue straightened out but I personally will always prefer the higher volume of the 2.

My Steen vents are still holding up great and Im loving the comfort and durability of the shoe still and have decided Ive gotta get another pair and am going to go for the waterproof version this time. Thought Id check and see if your waterproof Steens are still holing up well. Cant imagine they would be different in terms of durability then the vents but youd know. Oh and thanks as always for sharing your great shoe reviews!

    Hi from Scotland.
I've had my Targhee 3s for 2 years now and they've been great. I do a lot of outdoor trekking, hillwalking and photography. I have wide feet and these are perfect straight from the box. Starting to wear down on the outsides because I pronate that way. No problems with soles coming off. If I have one criticism it is this; I do a lot of beach and shoreline photography and they're not the best on wet rock. That said they are so comfortable. I need new shoes now though and have been looking around. Meindl make really comfortable wide shoes/boots but are very expensive. Keen's Ridge Flex Waterproof Hiking Shoes look pretty good but not available in wide in Europe. Can't understand that. So I will probably stay with the 3s.

I went through three pair of Keen Durand boots made in the USA .The first pair lasted 2 years the second and third pair six months. I had a pair of Keen H2 They also came apart. No more Keen shoes for me. I've contacted Keen several times and they never responded. That's what happens when there is NO commitment to quality and it's all about the money.

You have to file a warranty claim if the shoe came apart before you have had them for one year. I did this and they gave me a promo code for the exact amount that the boots cost. Even then it takes 7-10 days to review it.

Keen's are so comfortable and fit like a sneaker. I wish, for a little more money, they would make a shoe that was recraftable that was just as comfortable. Too bad about the heels on those. That should never happen. I have a pair of Keen Austin's and a pair of Keen Boston's that are my all time favorites. Unfortunately they don't make the Boston's anymore. Thankfully I haven't had the same issues with the heels as you.

I just bought my first pair of Keen (Pittsburgh model) boots. I really hope they don't disappoint me. I'm not a fan of direct attached soles. They almost always tear off. That's why I go for welted soles on boots instead of direct attached soles. Welted soles never tear off and the boots can be resoled once the soles wear down.

Surprised you live in Florida...wow must be bloody hot to wear, I live in Canada with -25 Celsius and they keep me warm, so wow! Has for your sole coming off, again I am surprised maybe Keen Targhees don't do so well in hot and humid country because in cold weather never had that problem. And as I said I have 4 pairs my oldest is 10 years old and still look brand new, bummer for you. Maybe you could try Lowa Renegade, Columbia, Vasque, Merrell, Salomon Quest, Danner (although those are costly??), but don't touch La Sportiva, Scarpa, or Meindl way too expensive.

Waterproof leather, Nubuck, ideally in one piece, minimal seams, Vibram (or similarly durable) sole, ankle size, weight up to 600 grams...And you have the best hiking boots. All year round. With a durability of approx. 10 years and with thousands of kilometers. This is what tourists want. Look for a manufacturer who can make such shoes.
Synthetic - leather hybrids, with complex soles, full of seams, this is the wrong way to go.

Keen makes my favorite shoes, the shape just works for my feet when most others dont, that being said its really hit or miss on the durability, Ive had some pairs last until the tread is worn smooth with no real issues, others the lugs come unglued within a few weeks. It feels like whatever asian factory makes them is really all over the place on their glue applications and its just luck on if you get a pair that lasts vs a pair that implodes.
