She is a textbook narcissist. Her words are shocking by still 'attempting' to take responsibility she still blames Courtney. She says the dysfunctional home and with different dads and kids - but then goes on saying it's her fault she made her manipulative. It's a word often used when a child has little to no control over a situation - and or may not even understand the emotional turmoil they're going through as they are too young to even have a say or manage what was going on at home at all. Children can seem like they're manipulative but the majority really need more support in areas that they're not getting. @@Myacckt

Like a childhood trauma factory. I empathize with those kids, it probably broke my parents' hearts when I told them everyone would probably have been better off if I were aborted, but it was the truth. I'd never make that appraisal of someone else but I think it's an involiable right of every child to sit in vocal judgement of their parental figures retrospectively.

I consider Courtney Love to be a sympathetic character. From being drugged, bullied, abandoned, and abused as a child to fighting grief, addictions, and '90s/'00s media as a woman, all while being unapologetically loud and chaotic, would kill anyone, but she kept pushing through.
She absolutely deserves her criticisms and should take accountability for genuine damage she's caused, but she also deserved so much better throughout her life. I for one have so much respect for her, and hope she stays sober and healthy.

Narcissists always try and find ways to make their behavior go under the radar or cover it up. The therapist route does not surprise me. It's a long-term solution to covering up poor past decisions and poor abusive behavior inflicted it seems mostly on her children. for narcissists, it seems their children are always a huge target of their rage. This is why and from experience please thoroughly vet your psychologist or any health provider. This isn't rude of you at all and it's better to ensure your safety physically and mentally. Otherwise, therapy can turn into a traumatic event quickly, and before you know it you need more therapy XD @@obvsobvs8369

A radio station tried interviewing her and they kept bringing up Kurt when she was trying to promote her new album (at the time). Understandably, she became extremely irate and hung up on the station. The DJ's then proceeded to make fun of her for like, 10 minutes, despite them ignoring her attempts to talk about her album and trying to talk about her husband's death anniversary. It's weird, because it's like, would YOU be pleased about people bringing up a painful subject every two seconds while you're trying to talk about something else?
Courtney was always a very direct, challenging and flawed person and the world hates her for that. She never tried to be perfect, even when she became famous and tbh, I think that's the most admirable thing about her. She's unapologetic and bold.

Something else not mentioned in this video essay is Courtney Love was diagnosed with Asperger's as a little girl, back when girls didn't get diagnosed with it and it was considered extremely rare and they had no resources whatsoever on what it was or how to assist.
You can see a lot of this stuff is typical autistic women stuff, just hyped up and blown out of proportion because she was villainized for it, especially in the media.
Over sharing, not always understanding your age expectations, having to resort to more extreme expression to be heard etc
How her mum understood how she would be crushed being judged by the other girls at Brownies. People misunderstood autism as not knowing how to appeal to social norms when often it's more about not even thinking about that and having a different priority or knowing already you aren't like them so there's no point faking it
And also positives like getting along with Nardwuar and helping him out when people don't get his schtick and having empathy for things other people wouldn't have empathy for and trying to broadcast that empathy through art
I think if a lot more people understood that there wouldn't be so many fingers pointed at Courtney.

I can’t help but hold some affection for Courtney. Maybe it’s partly cause I think Live Through This is one of the best albums ever made, maybe it’s cause everyone hates her (not without good reason, to be clear), but there’s some level on which I just can’t stop myself from respecting her constant rawness in the face of fame. It’s the kind of thing that certainly doesn’t lead to a nice or good life, and I feel bad for Francis who must’ve been affected by having a mother who is such a disaster, but there’s just something just undeniably charismatic about her “fuck you” attitude.

I have nothing but love for her. It's so intertwined with my sister, it's hard to sum it up. Hole and Nirvana were our greatest loves growing up and we were young, her being 16, me being 12. Belting it all out together. We obsessively collected every piece of media, we could find, every magazine, every cassette, and cd, singles, alternates and bootlegs. There was a vhs tape cued up on the ready in the vcr at all times. Just like with radio mix tapes, we always missed the very beginning! But we accumulated a helluva collection. We cried and mourned together when Kurt died, the loss of our first love. But Courtney was surviving and we could to.
After my sister passed away in 2018 from complications related to addiction, I had to mourn alone and it was really hard. But I "inherited" the collection she/ we had amassed.
I'm just sharing that it wasn't just some songs to us, Courtney was the "no, I'm NOT gonna shut up" woman that we both wanted to be. That doesn't leave you.
What a fuking amazing video essay this was, seriously. Without bias, with no agenda (that seems ever present in male produced videos on Courtney, just sayin) , just an incredibly detailed and factual play by play, being fair even when the truth wasn't pretty. I'd totally pay to see this in a theater, it is THAT GOOD. Thank you for all the research and work that went into this production. 🙏

I remember hearing people say how Courtney Love couldn't sing worth a damn and I would defend it and still do, because during her Hole days, her voice just felt like raw rock to me. Not the most technical or classically trained but the emotion was definitely there and I just wasn't all that bothered by her singing. It was very interesting learning more about her life and one thing is for sure is that she'll always be memorable.

This video was my first time listening to Hole and Courtney's music and I honestly expected much worse. I always had the feeling people hated on her music just because they don't like her... And yeah it's true that diff people have different taste but her music is good. It's on par with Nirvana and other grunge or punk bands mostly, to me at least

I met her once, not that long before Kurt died-I think this is all an act, as she was very normal, very nice, and very sober. Had no idea who she was, or Dave Grohl, or Krist Novoselic, either. Nirvana was playing across the street from us at a bar in Deep Ellum in Dallas, and they came to our soundcheck-Kurt wasn't with them.
They came up to talk to us after we were done, and they were all very nice people. I though they were locals. Didn't realize who they were until I saw them on the MTV Unplugged show.
I keep seeing her demonized in the media, and I just don't get it.

I met her in November 1997. My Youth Pastor Told us he knew where Kurt and Courtney's House was and how to drive there. Our Church was in Auburn which is only a 30 minute drive from Seattle. We were all Greeted by her outside on the Front where the Bench is at on E Lake Washington Ave in Medrona(West Seattle). She talked with us played some songs and reminisced about Kurt and Hole. I DID get to see the Greenhouse, it was Fenced up and Guarded by two Security Officers. Courtney was very VERY Sweet, we could tell she was a little looney, but we knew she wouldn't harm a fly.

I was at LAX waiting for my friends flight to come in and I had my guitar just waiting and playing ( 1997) and I saw Courtney with her publicist ( I think) and I ran to her and asked her to sign my guitar and she did. Hello hopefully you see this. First off, this was a great, great essay on her. I really really appreciate how in depth you went on each album, not just live through this. LTT is a masterpiece, but so are CS and POTI (my personal fave)
As a black fan, I wanted to ask that if you end up feeling compelled to talk about her "racism," please look into the context of each even. Watch the MTV special where she talks about race and rock and roll. I'm not saying I like her behavior. I'm saying some people read quotes of her out of context and then write her off as an evil racist. I highly doubt she has hatred in her heart for black people. Like the song n-word in heaven that she did. I wish she never made it, but I think it's important to note that the n-word in question is herself. Think Norman Mailer's theory of the white negro.
Just wanted to say this. This was an accurate and compassionate video. Thank you!

there's literally an interview she gave when she came to brazil to play at a festival, where out of nowhere she says that "a mean black lady" treated her poorly or something. Like, be fucking for real. She's not a saint. There was also a gig where she was encouraging white fans to scream the n word as she was saying it herself in the first place. You can't excuse that.

Live Through This was on constant rotation when I was in my late teens/early twenties. Then I discovered Pretty on the Inside and was delighted to find it to be a strong album too. Not to mention the influence performers like Courtney had on my outlook... and fashion. Now that I am older I have found that my favourite music eras were in the late 70's and 80's but at the time the 90's stuff really spoke to me and it was a good time for female musicians to take centre stage

I really enjoyed this story. So thank you so much for making. I don’t really read up too much on my favourite musicians, especially Courtney as everyone seems to want to put their own spin on her. But I enjoyed this bio through the songs. I’ve been a fan for over 30 years, and the only album I didn’t love was celebrity skin, but it seems to reflect where she was in life. I love American Sweetheart, some of my favourite songs are on that album. So I never understood why it was considered ruined. And nobody’s daughter is her best work in my opinion. I was lucky enough to see her tour that record in a very small intimate venue. And now I feel it’s time for her to release an album and tour again, just because I love her music, and love seeing her live. I was also at the now infamous 1994 reading festival gig, at the front, and I don’t believe people were there to see her fall apart or break, it was jammed full of fans down the front, who had no agenda, other than they loved the band and wanted to see their icon. There was a lot of look a-likes there, though I wasn’t one. This is my daughter’s utube sign in, just to clarify the apparent incongruence of age 😀 l weaver ❤

Love the work! I can see some direct correlation between her and Lana Del Rey. Courtney sings about being “nobodys daughter” and Lana in Chemtrails sings “Nobody’s son, nobody’s daughter”. She also has a song where she says something about Joni Mitchell and “Court almost burnt down my home, Stevie’s (Stevie Nicks) callin on the telephone”
Oh and Courtney cites one of her influences as Fleetwood Mac!

Hi. I just wanted to say, your account has quickly become my favorite account on youtube! i've watched all of your videos the past few months, and I've listened to some as a podcast on my MP3. This may sound weird, but I've never really watched something informational like your videos (I love "video essays" and such in general!), and felt both feminine and intellectual (that feeling when you are consuming something deeply, I don't know how to explain it) at the sime time, like your videos make me feel. It's a strange feeling of obtaining knowledge and understanding, but also feeling very seen and spoken to as a girl. You are great at analyzing, unpacking and connecting various topics and themes, and watching your videos does not only give me lots of new interesting insights and information, it is also generally enjoyable! I hope this account never stops and I love women and being a woman! Sorry if there are some spelling mistakes in here, English is not my first language and though I can completely understand it, speaking and writing sometimes goes paired with some errors.
PS: I was wondering if I could do suggestions on topics, if so: would you maybe want to talk about Skins and especially Effy, Cassie and Michelle? I feel like they had such a big influence on girls in terms of taboos on TV, and the whole "bad girl/party girl" trope.
