Jimmy Greaves was more than just a footballer; he was a full-time legend and a part-time boozer. Until one day, he ended his addiction before it could rip him apart…This is his story, let’s take a look.
Jimmy Greaves, born on February 20, 1940, in Manor Park and raised in Hainault, Essex, was destined to leave his mark on football from an early age. As a young boy, Jimmy was scouted by Chelsea's Jimmy Thompson and soon joined the team as an apprentice in 1955. Under the nickname "Drake's Ducklings," named after Chelsea's manager Ted Drake, young Jimmy showed signs of becoming a football legend.
In his youth days at Chelsea, Jimmy was nothing short of a goal-scoring machine. During the 1955-56 season, he scored a jaw-dropping 51 goals, and he didn't slow down the following season, tallying an incredible 122 goals. His prowess in front of the goal was evident when he played in the 1958 FA Youth Cup final. Although Chelsea lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Jimmy's performance was unforgettable, with the match ending in a dramatic 7-6 on aggregate after a thrilling comeback by Wolves.
