    I replaced the thermostat in my 1970 Evinrude Fisherman 6 hp. The first video I put out I did not install the gasket right so this is #2.

      william gwiazdowski question for you. I have a evinrude and I am wondering why it’s overheating. If I have it in a barrel it doesn’t over heat. But if I have it on the boat in the water it over heats in 5 to 10 minutes. What could be the problem? If it can be more then one thing please give me the list so I can fix it right. Thank you.

      @@OmFishing - I got the engine to start and fast idle, but it was not putting out water through the exhaust, so I shut it off and ordered a new impeller, gasket, and driveshaft seal. The thermostat was okay but. I put a new one it anyway. I changed the gearcase oil (no water in the oil) I'm waiting on gaskets so I can put the new impeller and lower unit back together. If it doesn't run well, then I'll rebuild the carburetor.

    Thanks for your help. I have this same Evinrude 6 motor and your videos helped a lot. I've replaced the thermostat and installed a new water pump kit, but the water is still not pumping out the tell-tale. I'm stumped .. any ideas now?

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  Před 3 lety +1

      My first question to you would be are you sure the water pump is pumping. I will sometimes force water up the lower unit with ear muffs or drop the lower unit and run water up the tube below the engine. Are the rubber grommet where the water tube connects under the engine in good condition. Did you take the hose off the tell tale and make sure it is clean. Does the water come out the tell tale if the thermostat let out. Let me know. Thanks for watching.

    I ran through some really dirty water (Louisiana bayou) and my 1965 Fisherman 6HP stopped spitting water from the rear exhaust. I replaced the thermostat and the impeller, but still no exhaust water. Do you recommend adding a telltale?

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  Před 2 lety

      Sorry to hear that, when I get sand in mine I take the thermostat out and try to flush the engine. Some of these engines have small water passages in side. It don't take much to stop it up. Did you try to flush water from a hose up the water tub when you had it a part?

    Maybe the ground the advance plate to advance the spark more before the throttle came on. Yes it’s hard to imagine it would wear that much

    Awesome! Do you think a faulty thermostat would cause bogging down issues on a 68 6 hp Johnson. I rebuilt the carb so I’m kind of stuck now trying to figure out what the issue is. Thanks again

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  Před 2 lety

      I think the thermostat could make the motor go into safe mode and the motor would slow down. Just bogging could be a fuel issue or timing. First guess would be a fuel line sucking air at a connection. Be sure and let me know what you find.

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  Před 4 lety +1

      If you don't see any water coming out I would make sure the hose from the engine is clear and the exit is open. If that is not it I would take the lower unit back off and check that the water tube grommet for proper placement. I would make sure the impeller and pin are correct. Hope this helped!

My parts manual shows the screw for the Thermostat Housing, the Cap for the Thermostat Housing, The Gasket for the Thermostat Housing, but no Thermostat. What the heck?? Was it not supposed to have one (seems very unlikely)?

    I have one of these it hasn't seen much service I'm missing the proper and I have to do he thermostat but parts are hard to comeby here in the UK for such old motors
    Also the starter dog/ pinion gear has worn and dose not engage with the flywheel.
    Nevertheless it runs nicely when it's sparked up.
    If you got any 2nd hand parts for sale propeller, starter dog I would be interested.

    would you please explain what problem /damage could occurs to the engine if you use having removed the termosthat?

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  Před 3 lety +3

      Proper engine temperature is critical for good operation. When your engine is running to cool the following conditions will occur, fouled spark plugs, poor idle operation, loss of wide open power, excessive fuel consumption, excessive carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. your engine will just keep building up with carbon until it stops. This will take soon time, but this is why it should be at operating temp.

      I don't know if you noticed, On my motor the Starter lockout cable assembly is missing. What this does is stop the motor from starting in gear. It has to be in neutral. I never replaced that cable and brake assembly. If your motor will not turn check the lockout plunger to make sure it is releasing when in neutral. Hope this helps and stay safe!!
