Acorn to Arabella: Building a sailboat from scratch

- When he started the process of crafting a 38-foot wooden sailboat from scratch, Steve Denette knew nothing about boat building. Beginning seven years ago, he's documented the project on CZcams, where his "Acorn to Arabella" has gone viral. Correspondent Brook Silva-Braga checked in on Denette's progress.

My name is Jim Clester I am 70 years old and live in north east Arkansas. I have been watching Steve and acorns to Arabella from the beginning. I rarely miss a weekly episode and of course always have plenty of opportunities to visit old episodes to renew some of the work. I think Steve may just fit into the hero category of people I have come to know. This guy has talent, brains and fantastic work ethic, he is honorable and unique. I can’t over state my admiration for him and his team, Family and friends, who support him.
I'm super happy for Stephen for getting this massive coverage. He certainly deserves this and the ride has not been smooth but it has been steady. His workmanship is fantastic. He and Leo Sampson (who has built several boats in the past) are litterally neck and neck. Different approaches but a committment to excellence.

As a desert dweller with no desire to sail I have followed Steve and the crew from the beginning. I have marveled at his craftmanship. No matter what the problem he seems to always find away around it and is never shy to admit he has made a mistake

I was one of those who picked this up when the keel got poured on CZcams. It's been a long journey for many of us, even those who aren't there shaping the wood. This is worth a follow on CZcams people; there's more adventure left for these people.
Yea, I also picked up on this with the lead pour. I will happily admit that Steve and crew have become a regular part of my Friday mornings. I'm guessing that along the way we have seen the fabrication of every single piece of that boat! Thank You for bringing us along on your journey Steve!

Yep, I saw the keel video and went back and watched from the first episode. Not only is the boat project itself pretty amazing, but they make good videos too.
I rode my bike past his place for a few years and never knew what was going on in there. This is so gratifying and exciting.

I have been following Stephen’s journey for 4 years now. I look forward to the project completion and quite frankly I will also miss following his weekly building updates of the build. The story of the people coming together and the backstory throughout the episodes makes this an entertaining journey to follow.

I've been following Acorn to Arabella since the very beginning of Steve's and Alex's journey and they have been nothing more than just inspiring. Considering neither one had anything in the way of sailing under their belts let alone boat building within their background is just amazing for what they've achieved so far. I hope and prey Steve's mom is able to have the pleasure of the Maiden voyage with her son this June.
Steve is an accomplished woodworker. Came by the boat building through his love of wood.

I’ve been watching Steve since the beginning and he really has something to be proud of. He is quite the craftsman and knows how to get the job done. His determination and dedication is something to admire. I will continue to watch and cheer him on to the finish line.

CBS really gave this project some worthy airtime. i have been following it from the begining and the commitment has me gripped. launch is in june and the youtube vids will still keep coming afterwards.

I seriously recommend people go back to the start of the journey and then binge-watch every episode up to the current video. You will not regret it.
The thing I really like about this build compared to so may others on CZcams is we get to watch it as it is happening instead of 'Hey, I built a boat. Here is the full build condensed into 20 minutes'.
I love watching Stephen work through problems. What books he is reading to get all of this information into his head, and asking professionals for advice and help if he isn't able to because of a lack of time to learn the skills or because he is just so busy with everything else there is no time to do it himself. For instance, having another YT boat builder make the tender for Arabella.
That pouring of the keel is what got me hooked.

Great story on the project. I have been subscribed and watching intently for years now. Funny thing, the reason I found A2A was because I love Huskys and I love woodworking. I saw a video with Akiva, Steve's Husky, in it and was hooked. Now I look forward to every Friday having coffee with Acorn to Arabella!

I worked with Steve. That boat is gunna float.
Back in the day (late 70's), I started building a 43' fiberglass sailboat in my backyard in Tulsa. I underestimated the job and ended up selling the boat when it was about half finished. I did finally live my dream by circumnavigating singlehanded in a Chatham 33', steel pilothouse cutter. I sold my boat 10 years ago, but still have dreams of my time at sea. There is nothing like the cruising life.
Did you follow Doug Jackson's build of SV Seeker in Tulsa? A 74' steel, junk-rigged, motor-sailor built from raw sheet steel in his front yard. Amazing project. He's in the Gulf now, adjusting rigging and learning to sail.
Yep, the keel pour was my launch date. Been there for every single video since.

The best part was KP… Sometimes there just is no explanation that will work. She’s there cause she loves to do it. Riches don’t always come and gold and silver. She should be proud of herself.

if you like boat dreamers look at samson boatworks. leo sampson is a boat builder and a sailor from england. i bumbled onto the project of leo rebuilding the wooden sailing vessel the tally ho a vessel that albert strange a world renown boat builder a hundred years ago. tally ho won some prestigious sailing awards in its day. leo bought the sailing vessel for a dollar. the vessel was removed from a boat yard in washington state usa and moved to a place where leo and volunteers have been working on rebuilding the tally ho from the keel. to the sail. and the question i like to ask and dare not ask is that with all the restoration work would it make more sense to take the original plans and build a brand new tally ho ii. i will attempt to answer my own question with that the history and the heart and soul of tally ho would not transfer to a brand new boat called the tally ho II. tally ho has over a hundred year history.
in a parallel thought to acorn to Arabella the boys found life partners and leo found a lady named francesca.

Did you see the Sampson Boat Co episode that showed the guy from Acorn to Arabella? He was in awe of the rivet machine press. To be honest, I got giddy seeing the cross over. Hopefully they'll all meet up and sail together.
i am like my younger brother edwin. he took after the famous talking horse. mister ed. it must have been part of the dna mom and dad gave us. in the scheme of life we are similar yet differently. i remember that my dad thought that our last name waterschoot could translate into river pirates. but if i take poetic license. maybe i do because i like music of a group called pirates of the Mississippi. and that has a mighty american river and pirates. i was born in a country with alot of land under sea level ( the nederlands to the dutch folks. the netherlands to the world, and holland as a nick name. i also loved jimmy buffet and his song of son of a son
of a sailor. and some of his songs have pirates mentioned in it. and now mr ed and in both graduated from windsor locks connecticut a canal town with a high school that was home of the pirates called raiders. as a kid i liked playing with toy boats and made paper.boats out of newspaper. and ocassionly made simple boats out of wood.
now i am curious. was he a son of a son of a sailor or is the a dream of building and sailing a boat. but he has the love of momma and taking her out sailing on a boat the he had hands in building that might demonstrate a walt disney trait if you can dream it you can make it happen and if you can make it happen you can share it with people you love. for stephen and his lady traveling friend. but he has to see the lady that carried him in her womb for 9 months and took care of him for over 18 years. she is nearing her end of life process. and he is nearing the first part of his of dream of building a boat. a dream of finding a life partner for sailing to an island or around the world. the destination is not that critical. it is the just life's journey.
and maybe older folks including me say if you dream it just do it. otherwise you will have to review it on a later date. and you may have repetitive regrets for not doing it when you could and maybe unable to do it now.
do it now. no excuses necessary because no excuses are acceptable.

Sampson Boat Company is just as good if not better.
It's a different animal, almost apples and oranges in comparison. The whole crew including Leo are professional boat builders and have built many boats between them, not to mention working in a larger boatbuilding complex with all the services a boatbuilder might require. Steve is learning as he goes and building far from most facilities. Both are terrific in their own right but it's unfair to compare.
If you don't pursue your dream than somebday you will be sitting on the porch watch tv and other people doing. You'll hate yourself.

The weakness of this story is that the foundation of the boat was where he began. If after 7 years of working for someone else, starting a boat,,, would have made story. Here i think the is in for launching and restarting all over again (due to a simple mistake made by a rookie, in the foundation of the boat). I wish him luck, but would not waste the time watching his channel.
Naah... Ask any boatbuilder on CZcams - while they might have a dozen different ways of doing things they'll all tell you not to worry because Steve knows what he's doing. It's not like he's making things up as he goes: he's been thinking things through for far longer than seven years, he's got drawings and calculations to work from, dozens of books to consult, experts he can rely on. It will all work out fine.

They actually explain how they harvest the trees. It's selective cutting at it's best and they use all that they can. Plus the trees are on his property planted by his ancestors. When you cut large trees in a densely forested area, you create room for future saplings to grow.
Carlos, I guess that I can assume that you live in a mud hut. What is your house made out of? Uhoh, perhaps its constructed of some wood products. You look silly with your comment regarding the construction of this boat.
Carlos, you have wrongly concluded that Steve Dennett is some kind of old-school pillager of the environment. Regular followers of the project will be pleased to correct you. Much of the tooling equipment has been rescued and recycled. Surplus tools, and help was passed on to the Sailcargo Project in Costa Rica, where giant wooden sailing ships are being built to replace environmentally less-responsible steel boats. Chopping down trees is not always evil. Surviving in a complex and challenging environment will take more than the creation of a few more National Parks for rich folks to fly to in jet planes. Governments have the power to do great things to manage global challenges. Individuals have the ability to question, dream, invent, persuade, and inspire. Watch the video again and perhaps you'll see something else.
@@themister3865 No need to be nasty. There are ways to responsibly harvest lumber. Nothing wrong with planting trees to replace those there harvested.
All the rich people complaining about climate change but yet continue cutting down all the trees for housing and warehouses. Stop chopping down all trees. Also the rich people need to stop flying jets dock the yachts and stop being hypocritical
