I ended up moving into my MiL's home, and she left behind a 40 inch Trinitron. When it was time to get rid of it, I could just barely pick it up, and there was no way I could get down the stairs with it. My wife put an ad on Craigslist for a free TV, and it was gone after a few hours and a few people trying to lift it off the porch. I found the manual, and it said it weighed about 300 lbs.

likely the 40XBR700/800, I had the 700 variant, it's an HD CRT set that had great sound, but not so great for retro games due to the digital processing and improper scaling of resolutions, not natively supporting 240p/480i.

    • @dapperfan44
      @dapperfan44 Před rokem +3

My family had one too. Unfortunately we used it until it died. Great TV for its time, altho expensive. $4000 Canadian iirc. stand extra.
it supported up to 1080i. altho at that res all contents were in 16:9 so the image was smaller. We mostly just used it to watch standard def Tv.
yes 300 lb. we didnt even get rid of it after it died. it sat there like a corpse in the living room next to a working lcd tv. eventually we moved and got the movers to take it away. 3 strong guys to take it down stairs. I just hope they managed to repair it.
Lots of great memories. I still have the remote 😂

I’ve kept four, with the largest of the bunch being my daily driver: a black 1997 32” Trinitron with s-video.
I also have a 2003 27” Samsung with component which I picked up for free from a family’s vacation ski lodge. It was only ever used to watch the odd dvd, and is in phenomenal shape.
Beyond that, I have a 1994 13” Magnasonic (rf only) which comes out for parties, and a white 1997 9” RadioShack TV which I love for getting cozy with on the couch with my SNES - this one is my second-most used of the bunch.

For a decent-sized room where you can sit 8’ or so away, I think 27” is the sweet spot. I grew up with a 19” in the living room and scored a used 27” in my teens to stick in its place - the difference was huge! 25” exists too but wasn’t super popular. Great episode. I bought a brand new Sony Wega KV27FS12 27" CRT in 2001 for $500. Back then I bought it for the excellent svideo quality for my CDi (hehe) SNES, and JVC SVHS deck. It had these "new fangled YPbPr component inputs", which I assumed I'd never use, but skip ahead a couple of decades, and it's what I MOSTLY use on it! I bought HDRetrovision YPbPr cables/adapters, for GEN, TG16, NEO, SNES, SAT, and PSX. I am very happy with how everything looks on it. This TV has been through FIVE moves, to five different houses, and it's still going strong. The moves beings me to an important thing though.. the weight.. Wega's feel like they are made from steel and bricks. In fact this 27" Wega was about the same weight as my old JVC 35" CRT. It's a big boy! As much as I love the Wega, if/when it dies, I'm going to stick with an OLED. That, with some of the newer scanline shaders is VERY close to a CRT.. They are "almost there", and close enough for me. Good luck on finding your dream display!

Where I live, I've not seen a CRT on side of the road in recent memory. I finally ran across a 27" Sony VVega at a local thrift store and like you, it's my favorite CRT I've ever had. I got one that has the Component, SVIDEO, RF and Composite, along with a digital tuner so I can pickup free local TV stations with a cheap set of digital rabbit ears I got from the local bargin store. I agree with you, I really like this CRT and hope it lasts me for many years. Oh, and yes.. it took me and my son to carry it upstairs, this thing is pretty heavy. I guess I shouldn't have put my game room on the 2nd story...

Last year a neighbor down the road put 2 CRT TV's on the side of the road. One was a small 20 inch tv and the second was a massive 40 inch. I had no problem making my mind. I immediately picked up the little one. I was thrilled that I found a free tv and i didn't look back at the other massive tv.

One console I prefer to use with composite is the Sega Saturn. The otherwise “mesh transparencies” turn into actual transparencies from the dithering effect on 3D games. Otherwise I’d go with component. A product Ive come to appreciate, is the shinybow scart to composite converter. Any Scart capable console will benefit from RGB with this configuration.

I have a 13in Magnavox RR1337 W101 and I love it! It's wood veneer, it's coaxial input, it's mono sound, everything. I use a splitter to connect a DVD player, SNES, Genesis, and of course, that digital converter box for all that sweet T.V. viewing.
And, it even has the original remote control! What a gem! 😁
I forgot to mention that my particular model was made in February of 1992 and still works and looks like brand new both inside and out!

I went back and grabbed the CRT (Toshiba 20A42, I believe) I used to use as a teenager, as my mum didn't want it taking up space. Talk about a win-win situation: she saved like 8 cubic feet of space, and I got to rediscover how good those old games used to look! A typical consumer CRT like this smooths out the pixels, often making things look like a higher resolution than they are. It's hard to believe that Donkey Kong Country is only 256x224, when it's so clear and smooth!
When I was a kid, we had a 19" RCA with a fancy-shmancy keypad and LED window for inputting and displaying channel numbers. I forget the model, though.

So I converted a huge portion of my basement into two gaming/media centres, an HD area and an SD area with a 32" Sony Trinitron HD CRT. Playing games using component connections looks utterly beautiful, then there are the systems that can output 480p and then you're really floored.
I have two more CRTs in reserve, both JVC I'Art sets, both with component. One's a 27" and the other is a 36.

Although I've previously owned 20" Sony Trinitron CRT TVs, smaller TV's are definitely easier to move and manage.

I started out with a 32’’ Trinitron that’s flat front, all hookups from Component down, but come to find out it was the first HD set in their line so no light gun compatibility. Still looked good so I kept it because it had low usage hours.
Then I got a 90’s curved front 27’’ Trinitron with S Video input which worked well and supported light guns, but the color was not the most impressive.
Recently I found a 27’’ Panasonic Tau that while flat front, had all the inputs from Component to RF, yet was still an SD set so it was compatible with light guns. And the color on the Tau smokes my two Trinitrons, it seriously looks as close to PVM/BVM that I’ve ever seen from a consumer CRT. So it ended up being the best of both worlds.
I think you are so right about the TV size. I am still hunting for a 13 or 14 inch, especially if I could find one in the PVM/BVM flavor. My 32’’ weighs 270lbs due to the subwoofer in the back, and is honestly too much for even two people to lift. My 27’’ tv’s are still even borderline too heavy.
The great thing about CRT’s is that composite still looks great on most sets/consoles. Admittedly I am a cable snob, but you really can’t go wrong with a CRT and what ever you already have cable wise. My top loader NES looked pretty good despite only having RF.

Great points in this video. I had a 32 inch Sony WEGA until recently as circumstances changed and I no longer had the room to keep it in. I advertised it locally and a guy I used to go to school with came to collect - it's a small world. We joked about how my partner will be relieved it is gone and how he was going to break the news to his wife. 😆
Thankfully I've since picked up a 14 inch Philips for free from the recycling centre. It nowhere near as fancy but the picture quality is good, it works great and no more hernias when I'm asked to move it. 👍

I own that spiffy little 9" PVM personally. Our main TV used to be a 36" flat glass CRT, and nary an HDTV was found in our home. I've never had a better experience with light gun games than on that old beauty despite the geometry issues with it being a flat screen. Our beloved 36" CRT flickered out and died about 2 years ago. At least I haven't resorted to owning only a 0" model!
