When I was a student in Toronto and Cincinnati, it was fashionable amongst my peers to dismiss this great cellist for over-sentimentality, cello-melo-drama and the like. When I heard him play this pristine classic in Chicago, just as he does it here with understatement and grace, in about 1990 (Samuel Sanders at the piano) I truly learned the meaning of the phrase "callow youth". Generous men, they played encore after encore extending the recital by about an hour. We miss you, Lynn.

His supposed over-sentimentality never bothered me. But his poor intonation and rather piggish, sloppy bowing has bothered me since I was a student many years ago. To each his own, I suppose. I do feel horrible that he was yet another victim of Levine’s disgusting abuse of power, though. And I was always glad he was able to power through life and make such a wonderful career in spite of that.
