Do we know that this work, which remains very popular, was in fact a kind of " spotlight "?! Johan Georg Staufer commissioned it from Schubert to promote the new instrument he had developed, the arpeggione, a kind of cello-guitar. The arpeggione disappeared, the Sonata remained. Its charm, its melancholy character without heaviness, this spirit of instrumental song has touched all audiences - both in its most frequent transcription, and the one closest to the original, for cello and piano, and in other pairings (clarinet and piano, viola and piano, flute and piano, double bass and piano...). The recording made by Mstislav Rostropovitch with the composer Benjamin Britten, who was also an excellent pianist, is a discreetly nostalgic gem of elegance where the two instruments dialogue like two friends, in a harmony of sonorities that allows each one to blossom at its best, from the supple piano, full of nuances, to the cello that delivers its intimate singing with a modest restraint. And what a sound! An unmixed pleasure.

In 1974, when I was a teenager, I heard Maestro Rostropovich play this in Carnegie Recital Hall in NYC. I sat in the front row, directly in front of him. The performance was sublime, majestic, and tender. Every note had a separate meaning, and they joined together in celebration of life’s sweetness. I was transported.

Beautiful! One of my fondest memories to this day is my 1st ever orchestral concert as a child where maestro Rostroprovich conducted the US National Symphony. Many years later, l made the acquaintance of John Marcellus, who had been principle trombone of the National Symphony at the time, and even got to work with him a little bit. It's difficult to put into words how much l adore the great performances of Rostroprovich on cello from before l was even born!
And all of that says nothing about my boundless adoration of Britten.

As a greatest songwriter, Schubert made about 700 songs for Vocal, Piano, Cello, Trios, and Quartets in addition to 9 symphonies and others. His short life was full of musics with romantic melodies.
