    Possums are just adorable. We have a little "neighbor" who comes around now and then; I met her when she was a baby (she actually managed to get into the house somehow!). I quickly scooped her up by the tail and scruff of her neck, and gently carried her outside, talking softly all the while. She kept coming back for a while, and got so used to us that she'd just walk right past us AND the cats (who just watched her eat their leftovers)!
    I haven't seen her for a while, but we still leave snacks out for her. The neighborhood wildlife (and every stray cat for miles around) just LOVE us!
    (P.S. We found how she got in and have since fixed the problem.)

    Leave it, they scavenge dead animals, and one Opossum eats 5000 or more ticks in a season. That info came from a recent article in the Missouri Conservationist magazine. I would assume that in warmer climates, where ticks are not as dormant for the winter, that the Opossum would eat even more ticks. After reading that article I changed my opinion of Possums

  • @naamansalas
    @naamansalas Před 3 lety +4

    I don't know how true this is but I heard that possums and racoons don't like to be in the same area. If that's the case, then that's another reason to leave possums alone. Better to have possums then racoons.

    From the Opposum Society (yes, there's a society) website: "Any mammal can get rabies. However, the chance of rabies in an opossum is EXTREMELY RARE. This may have something to do with the opossum’s low body temperature (94-97º F) making it difficult for the virus to survive in an opossum’s body."

    I raised an Opossum from a baby. She was one of my most favorite pets that I've ever owned. She was trained to go the bathroom in a litter box, was very clean, and very affectionate. She slept for about 15 hrs a day, which was great for me at the time, (I was young and partied alot). The one and only problem I have with this breed, is their short lifespan. To this day, when I see one dead on the road, I'll stop and make sure there are no babies in the pouch. They are an awesome, misunderstood, beautiful animal.

    Sorry but you are wrong. I have caught opossums literally eating a full grown hen in a hen house.

      Sorry to hear that. It's more likely the hen was killed by a raccoon or coyote and the possum got there later. They will eat road kill and other deceased animals.

      @@plantabundance Anyways, they're disgusting. I shot one last night with a .177 pellet gun and tossed him over to my neighbors fence! lol

    Alright so I live trapped a possum. Then I drowned it in a 55 gallon barrel, bastard could barely fit in there he was so big.
    But now I realize it was actually my neighbors golden retriever and I'm not sure what to do next.

    So I have 4 cats that live outside but I learned that a possum eats the cat food that I leave out when they don’t finish their food so it comes up on my porch.
    Strange thing is, my cats just chilled out with the possum no problem. I tried to scare it off but it looked at me weird. (I’m not an intimidating person I guess)
    Should I kill the possum just in case it decides to attack my cats ???

      They usually won't. They aren't like raccoons. Look like a piglet crossed with a rat with the temperament of a sloth. 😂

      I feed the homeless cats in the area and have a possum thats been living under my shed. They seem to coexist just fine!

    I dislike possums. A large one killed my four chickens and now is after my quail. I saw it in my garage eating the pig feed. It leaves feces all over my garden tools. How do I get rid of them?
