Excellent video. Thank you very much. I bought a Garmin eTrex 32 last week and I inserted an SD card in order to load the TalkyToaster map. However, Garmin Base Camp could not see it. The Base Camp version was the most recent one - 4.7.4 - and I discovered from a Google search that there is some incompatibility between the 4.7 series and third party maps on an SD card. The solution was to uninstall 4.7.4 and install version 4.6.2 instead. Which I did and it worked perfectly. I hope this comment will help others who may be tearing their hair out wondering why the hell they can't see the map.
Brilliant Tip John. Than k you for that. Back tracking to earlier versions really does work. Did you get used to your Garmin yet? Really enjoying it. I have had mine now for 4 years and they are bullet proof. So worth buying.

Great video Martin. By showing how users really use their eTrex, instead of just showing one feature at a time as done in the Garmin “training videos”, it was very clear and informative.
I always spot check a map and my compass on my hikes, but having an eTrex with you as well so handy.

Aw no problem. Not the best how to video but it's the basics that you need I think. A lot of features you don't need. Make a trail. Load it. Use it. Simples. Thanks for the comment 🙂
Hi Martin well done. A very short and to the point informative video on how to download and upload a trail using your Garmin Etrex 20. I have an Etrex H that I would use as back up for a location grid reference if needed. Personally I think that competent use of map and compass is an essential skill that should be used and practiced. Very impressed with the Garmin Base Camp download which I will be checking out. Keep up the good work.
Hi Seamus. Yep I fully agree. With technology the art of map and compass is not used as much. I've done the Mountain skills courses to up skill my navigation. Likewise.. love my Garmin. I love that I sit down to search and plan my route instead of sticking to the norm. Adds to the experience. Love it. Thanks for comment Sir 🙌

A few years ago I bought an eTrex 30X. Recently I sold it and bought the eTrex SE (which does not use real maps). I prefer the SE having Bluetooth connectivity to the phone, where I can prepare the routes or use as display in case needed.

It all depands what area you want the map for.
Talky toaster is great but basecamp sucks.
I have an etrex 20 as well but due to my aversion to basecamp I usually get gpx files from mountainviews or walk highlands.
I don't find it to bad. Getting GPX from other places is fine. Creating your own is what I prefer. But stick to what works for you. As long as it keeps you on the right track.
@@soletrail I do carry a map and compass as well just in case. That is what I used until I bought the etrex and I still use a paper map for planning etc.

I seem to be having trouble having the track/path "snap" to a trail basemap I have, or indeed any map. Is there something I'm missing?

Easier to use OS maps app on the phone
Hi Donald. Yep I have that as well. I tend to stay away from my phone when hiking. But Yep the OS map is good.
Not much use here in Kerry
You have to pay though and an etrex will work for a week on 2x AA batteries. It is also waterproof and shockproof.
A phone will have to be kept on airplane mode to save battery, it is touchscreen so can be affected by rain and it is rubbish in the winter. The etrex 20 can be used in winter wearing gloves and is more accurate than a phone GPS.
@@BrokenBackMountains you have to pay for the garmin too which is not cheap. You only pay £20 for the year, you can put phone in waterproof case. It’s a waste of time getting one of these much better to download the OS maps app.
Also the hassle of having to connect it to the PC transferring GPX. OS maps desktop just drag and drop and it syncs with the phone
no good unless you can see how the damn thing tells you where to go
But it does tell you if you have a GPX loaded up.
I hate my 32x with a passion. I can get past the awful interface , but the bugginess makes it worthless. Crashes whenever I try to open a GPX. Finicky little b@st@rd from start to finish. If someone made a GOOD GPS unit they could own Garmin in a year.
