- The Conn 8D is THE horn sound you hear in movies! 🎥
Thanks to Vince DeRosa who established the 8D in Los Angeles in the 1950s, the Conn 8D has been the "Hollywood Horn Sound" ever since.
We caught up with some of Los Angeles' top French Horn recording artists to discuss the significance of the 8D sound in modern Hollywood films and the consensus was:

Vince DeRosa heard my father Jack and his brothers Arthur and Harry on tour with Toscanini and the NBC Symphony in 1950. He switched to the 8D, which they had worked with Conn e engineers to design in 1937-8 based on their Horner NiSi Kruspes which they had bought in Erfurt in 1931.
I can't wait to try the new 8D Currently I'm on a 1955 500k series. I wish Conn had brought back the double purfled outer tube endings.
I play a ‘69 M series with a lead pipe from Sam Marsch. It’s to this day the best sounding horn I’ve played
@@jordanjames3937 I played an N Series. Sounded like GOD. Played with the Houston Symphony by age 22.
I named that horn "The Screaming Cat".
Yeah.
New CONNs are made to that spec.

Won my audition with the Houston Symphony Orchestra at age 22 - playing a BADASS CONN 8D.
The Vince DeRosa spec CONN 8D is absolutely the GREATEST FRENCH HORN. Nothing comes close.

That’s Adedeji! 2nd horn in the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. Doesn’t look like he was playing an 8D in this video. They strategically did not show him a lot or his horn for that reason I’m sure
