  • Magnesium is considered one of the essential minerals that is involved in more than 300 different body processes, including keeping your heart beating and maintaining electrical stability of your nervous system. Magnesium is used by the body to help regulate serotonin and other neurotransmitters. And some researchers believe that low Magnesium is the problem behind treatment resistant depression. In this video I explain how Magnesium works for depression and anxiety.

Seriously everyone listen to her! I used to get severe anxiety attacks literally for no reason. I told the doctors and told them it wasn’t mental and my body was literally just having a panic attack when I wasn’t even stressed out if that makes sense. I started taking magnesium glycinate everyday and they went away in a week! 4 years still going strong.

Veronica, so grateful you shared your experience with panic attacks. I needed to here that so much! I haven't tried adding magnesium yet but I'm likely deficient as my diet isn't terribly good. But my body has been acting as though I was having a panic attack even though I'm not mentally panicked. When I explained my elevated heart rate and sometimes spiking blood pressure to friends and even the doctor they said "that sounds like a panic attack" which I thought was a ridiculous notion. I rarely panic about much of anything. So you're commit here definitely made me reconsider that possibility. I guess I didn't realize exactly what a panic attack was. I'm definitely going try increasing my magnesium and also be a little more open minded about this panic attack stuff. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

This right here!! This was me after a car accident. I NEVER had panic attacks or severe cognitive anxiety prior to it. The day after, I was balling my eyes out and literally laughing at the same time because I’m like mentally I’m perfectly fine but my body, as you said, was having an attack. Such a weird experience! I’d be totally fine, then out of nowhere my heart would race, I’d feel dizzy, hot, trembly, stomach in knots with absolutely no stimulus. I could be watching TV and then bam, panic attack. After weeks of dealing with that, I started taking magnesium supplements and it’s helped so much! Never had a panic attack since then either and this was also 4 years ago lol

I eat more foods geared toward “gut health” and eat less processed foods, alcohol and sugar (when I can). I’ve started walking or swimming laps just to get moving. I’ve found that exercise is so important for improving my depression/anxiety. Other smaller changes I’ve made are things like limiting social media or time on any kind of electronics. @@Benjamin-xv9le I've been working in NHS mental health services for about 30 years and I don't agree with your cynicism. RCTs are useful but there are a lot of politics involved- usually they are funded by organisations that seek a profit and unfortunately advising people how to eat healthily doesn't make a large profit in the way that antidepressants do. Consequently RCTs are often not carried out in this area. That doesn't mean attention to nutrition is misplaced. Dr Marks' video gave a concise and crystal-clear account of the science. It makes good sense for people to get their magnesium levels tested and to experiment with , say , supplementing with pumpkin seeds for a little while, and see whether that alleviates depression. Antidepressants do help quite a lot of people but they aren't the only way and learning about one's own nutritional needs can be an important part of the recovery process, which mainstream mental health professionals need to learn more about.

We just survived off of my moms job when she would bring home with free left over fried chicken every night from work and when I was hungry my dad would tell me to wait till mom gets home ( she would get home sometimes midnight) btw we would eat fried chicken every single day sometimes for breakfast dinner and lunch.
So knowing this I can see how my poor nutrition growing up contributed to my mental health.

I just tried to start taking magnesium because this reminded me of a few years ago when I was in the hospital for awhile and they found I had extremely low levels of magnesium. I started feeling better than I'd felt in decades and I thought it was because of the medicine to help the health issues that brought me there, but as time went on and I spent months and then years on that medication, I found myself right back where I was before mentally/physically/emotionally. Eight years later, I found this and thought that maybe the thing that made the real difference was the magnesium. My medication made it possible to live a normal life from a physical standpoint, but after just awhile of magnesium suddenly I feel like this buzzing unease that I could feel in my chest every second of every day is just not here anymore. I'm still needing to work on healthier sleeping habits, since I'm still up 5 hours before work, but it's going into Monday and I don't even feel a little stressed out about it. I spent the last 5 years being unable to focus on anything for all of Sunday because I needed to work the next morning, and I was certain in my mind that meant that I was going to fail the next morning. No matter how many times I succeeded, it was always going to be bad tomorrow. Now I can see what complete nonsense that was to the point I can't understand how I could think this way not just those 5 years, but for decades of my life. Something flipped a switch when I was a teenager and turned me into someone else, and I'm starting to feel like I'm finding that person I was before. I know this isn't everything and I need to go see someone, but I'd tried for nearly 15 years and I couldn't make myself do it and now I think that I can.

No FREAKING way. I was actually researching about this literally a couple days ago and decided there's no harm at all in taking a vitamin if it was going to help my anxiety (which mostly comes in the form of a high pulse). I actually started taking it 2 days ago and I don't know if it can have an effect almost immediately but I've been noticing that I'm not as anxious. I'm so happy about seeing this video.

I went off my lupus meds, mini strokes & chronic brain inflammation healed and got me out of the wheelchair. I lost 40 lbs this yr without really trying other than I felt well enough to get a job. They use a tool called an integrator or activator to gently tap things back into place. I go weekly. What it costs to go is far less than my SLE meds, hospital bills etc were. ($129/mo) I have always been big on testing for vitamin and mineral levels and have been chronically low for iron, D3, B12 & magnesium for over 30 yrs! I supplement and eat foods that should have them too. I am 45. Prayers for everyone dealing w chronic illness/disease.

My visits to psychiatrists wasn’t successful. But after I saw your video, I decided to take magnesium glycinate. I still get depressed but it’s not as serious as before when I harmed myself and had breakdowns and hysteria.
And the best part is that I’m having full night’s sleeps everyday now!! This is a huge thing for me as I struggled with insomnia since when I was a kid.

I had been slacking taking my magnesium for about two months. I knew it played a role in anxiety but I didn’t know how much. Well I’m also supposed to take it for migraines as well, and I’ve been feeling very stressed and anxious over the last month. It just came out of nowhere. Constant migraines, anxiety, just worrying about everything. Easily triggered. It’s been awful. Had 4 panic attacks over the last couple days because I totally overreacted to something a friend said and immediately started thinking the relationship was over, I lost everything, my life has no meaning. It was pretty scary because I’ve never gone downhill so fast before. Well I finally decided to take my magnesium and vitamin D today. Just because I actually remembered. I was already feeling better today anyway, but I came across this video and I’m like wow. Now this whole month makes total sense. Hoping I get back to a normal state quickly with taking the magnesium. I don’t wanna push my friends away by constantly worrying about things that aren’t really happening. It’s an awful feeling to have those thoughts coming constantly and out of nowhere. I never had any issue with trusting my friends. Never ever. Since last week, I feel like they’re lying to me constantly. It’s terrible. I hate it. But I started realizing it’s my own thoughts once the panic attacks happened. Then I was able to put my finger on it. This video helped confirm that and make things even more clear. I will never stop taking magnesium again. You can be sure about that.

I'm lucky I eat a lot of legumes and enjoy it so I get easily 3 to 4 times the daily value for magnesium without thinking, which is one less thing to worry about phew. If you struggle with anxiety as Dr Marks has described, consider tweaking your diet to include at least one meal of legumes a day, it could be peas, beans, lentils, tofu even peanuts, peanuts are both a legume and a nut.
They are also high in fibre which helps a lot with gut health.
Unsweetened cocoa powder and molasses are also very high in magnesium. A cup of cocoa with 1tbsp of each could be up to 100mg of magnesium I think. I often use cocoa in my coffee instead of milk because I like the taste of cocoa and coffee combined.
    Stay healthy everyone.
