    i stopped watching when you inserted the two different types of ram - though i considered stopping too, when no thermal paste (or pad) was put on the cpu..

    • @rallyscoot
      @rallyscoot Před 2 měsíci

      thermal paste or pad wasnt needed back in the days.. Yes it can improve temperature.. But like i said never needed.. Only heatsink and fan is enough.
      Iam going to build a 150Mhz one, because its fast enough and not much used.. And i dont care about 6Mhz lower FSB speed.

    I clicked the video, i watched it without looking away. after giving it a like because it is really good, i wanted to proceed to next video. Then i stopped for a second and noticed only around 60 likes and 1200 followers o something.... with the quality of the video, audio, script and editing i at least expected 30-50.000 followers. Great job!

    Nice computer :) The 166MHz is a classic.

    I built a Windows 98 retro PC, I took an old HP 6640C computer, which is very compact, upgraded the PSU to a 400 watt unit, added a Geforce 2 MX400 32mb video card, mated to a Monster 3dfx Voodoo 1 video card, added a Sound Blaster Audigy sound card, and for the hard drive I converted it to a 16gb Compact Flash card with an IDE to CF adapter, and one stick of 256mb PC100 ram. I removed the Floppy Drive, as I don't use it, I also upgraded the optical drive to a DVD unit that was black for aesthetics, and glued a puller fan in the front, and added a PCI slot exhaust cooler just below the Voodoo card. I have Bose Companion 2 Series II speakers, and an HP 19" (5:4) LED backlit TN monitor. I have 42 games for it in all, including NFS2SE, POD, and Wing Commander Prophecy to name but a few, I only run Windows 95/98 games on it, no DOS games.

    Dude, just found your channel and love the content. Excellent production quality and going to binge all your older videos over the weekend. Easiest sub of my life!

      Wow thank you! My older content was more proof of concept sort of thing. It's been a few months since my last video release but I hope to get something out soon. I have a few ideas.

    Nice, I wanted a S3 savage 4 and voodoo 2 sli setup, but the voodoo 2s are so expensive on eBay that I gave up

    I had a Pentium 233 MMX Baby AT system many years ago, it was the last of an upgrade series from my original 386/25 PC. It served me well for a few years before I traded it (or the guts of it, I forget) in for a 900 MHz AMD Athlon Thunderbird PC (Ooh, ATX form factor!), which was the computer I finally put Win95 (later, Win98) on in a dual-boot setup with DOS (wasn't abandoning DOS then). That was my main computer for quite a few years (before getting a Core 2 Duo system in 2007), but somewheere during that time I wanted the Pentium 233 back, so I found one, with DOS and Win3.1, on eBay.
    I've just finished converting it to an ATX setup, as I wanted the AT mid-tower case for my old 486DX/120 desktop system; didn't know back then that Socket 7 mobos also came in ATX versions. It also has a Stealth 3D 2000 (S3 Virge) card and 3dFx Voodoo 1; a Voodoo 2 is in the Athlon system. The system came with just the S3 card, but am thinking of putting my STB Lightspeed 128 (Tseng ET6000) in it instead.

    I have a Socket 7 PC too. But mine has a 266MHz K6, 128MB RAM -- I also have a Voodoo and S3 Virge but my Voodoo is an original Diamond Monster 3D and the S3 Virge has all of the VRAM expansions.

    I never had or wanted a 3Dfx Card, 1997 i had a Matrox Mystique Card and later a Diamond Viper V550 (TNT) so a 3DFX card was never needed.
    Thank you for that Video.

      I know they are over hyped but I still like them a lot(3dfx). Love matrox too though

      I made the same GPU choices back in the day. I missed out on the whole 3DFX thing. Only now do I have the Voodoo 1. Its main strength is the support early DOS 3D games and Glide-only windows games.. I haven't bothered with Voodoo 2 on my recent Win98 build. Voodoo 3 is faster than SLI Voodoo 2 and is cheaper to obtain.

      not needed, but it makes night and day.

    Should have installed a hard drive cooler, being mounted in the top of the PC where it is already warm, the hard drive will run hot and fail. I would have added CPU thermal paste anyway, why not? Cooler runs faster!!!

  • @B24Fox
    @B24Fox Před 7 měsíci +1

    Seems a bit slow, even for a P166. NFS 2 SE should have been flying with a Voodoo2.
    Try tinkering a bit in the bios.

    What do you do in a scenario if your motherboard does not have a cpu fan pin to connect to?
    And also, I'm curious if an ATX power supply adapter would work on your unit instead an AT power supply; additionally what are those back ports used for in that AT power supply? 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂

    • @alwaysobsolete
      @alwaysobsolete  Před měsícem +1

      The cpu fan in this build connects to the PSU. The front power switch is directly connected to the PSU

    • @alwaysobsolete

      Also I really haven't played around with ATX/AT adapters sorry.

    I can't speak for voodoo drivers, but Tomb Raider doesn't look half bad if you add the extra 2mb of ram to the expansion slots. At 4mb it looks about as good as software acceleration with the added bonus that performance is consistent regardless of processor. I'm currently working on a board with only 2 PCI slots and am trying to get it stable with an ISA 2D card and SLI V2s, but it's looking more and more like I'll end up with a virge and a single V2; Despite the bad rep it's probably my most stable and flexible card.

    • @alwaysobsolete
      @alwaysobsolete  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Yes stable and flexible for sure. I have a v3 and it feels like it is going to melt with how hot it gets.

    Im a bit surprised that different RAM slots can be used simultaneously. Also, dont think that Voodoo 2 should have a problem running Hexen, its probably CPU bottleneck.

    • @PipBoy3k
      @PipBoy3k Před 11 měsíci +1

      It depends on voltage. SIMMs support 5v, while DIMMs support mostly 3.3v with some early low capacity ones supporting 5v. I have one mobo that old, it allows memory mixing as long as only 5v sticks are used.

      depends on what system you want to install those. I would say.. Early pentium surely windows 95.. Pentium II windows 98.. For a late Pentium would go for Windows ME.

    Why does it have a key on the side of the pc

    • @FoxMulder78
      @FoxMulder78 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Keylock. It would prevent people from opening the case and/or disable the keyboard.
