    My mother, a deaf woman, played this game for years. Over and over and over again… she always hoarded her money, yelled when being chased, and took the same paths each playthrough and had to have beat it well over a dozen times, but always had a good time. Especially when we were watching her play.
    She didn’t understand the story, or any of the background lore - she just loved this game. It’ll forever be a masterpiece to her and myself.
    Tried to get her to play RE5 and RE6 with me, but the mechanics were a little different and she wasn’t having it! Lmao
    RIP Mom.

      @malibutaa Před rokem +7

      @@medranodiego8641that’s because it IS a secret. The game sets you up to miss it; you start in a new chapter right after leaving the room, with your back turned to the door, facing down the hall so the player is influenced to continue forward and not try going back. RE4 is filled with moments like that. If you want to get technical, the GC version of the game still has that scene but not separate ways, meaning it was always optional. Which is my point.

  • @toonbat
    @toonbat Před rokem +190

    I think RE4 took a cue from Aliens and Terminator 2. When people are familiar with your monster, and thus not so easily frightened by it, make the sequel lean more towards action. That way both the characters and the audience can experience the catharsis of feeling like they're facing their old fears head-on. But don't forget to also up the stakes and make the monsters more powerful, so that the tension remains.

    They did explain in the game that Luis Sera had taken medication to resist the Plagas infection. There is a note that says they tried to infect him, but to no avail because he took that medicine to kill the plagas before it hatched. They had to wait till the medicine ran through his system completely before they can infect him again.
    As for the executioner. I just assumed that the infection was taking too long and decided to just end him. I guess they had a plan to have Leon save Ashley, pretend to be the hero, and then help Saddler take over America, but later figured "Hey, why bother? Kill him and make a better plan."

    RE4 is quite possibly the best marriage of mechanics, enemy design, and level design in a game to date. The core "stagger-melee" combat loop is consistently satisfying, providing mechanical (i-frames, crowd control, massive damage) and kinetic (cinematic presentation, momentary lull in tension) rewards every single time. Enemies are always visually reactive to what the player does. Adversaries change over the course of the game, and things like shields, invisible foes, helmets, and crossbows force the player to mix up their tactics, and push them to discover every element of the game's rich toolset. RE4 also rewards experimentation with a variety of weapons and a rich upgrade system.
    It's an absolute masterpiece of design, which makes it delightful to play.

    • @42Mrgreenman
      @42Mrgreenman Před 2 lety +5

      @@abc-ug5ym I like that little insight at the end there. Not just the mine cart, but the whole combat system seems like they took the emotional experience of gun combat in something from the arcades like Lethal Enforcers, House of the Dead, or Time Crisis and adapted it to RE...Specifically, Time Crisis (With the pedal)...Leave cover...Check targets and distance...Prioritize threats...Line up reticle...Fire...Evade when pressured...
      But in terms of bagging on consoles, IMHO it's a matter of precision...it's the reason why almost every FPS on console MUST include at least some aim assist, especially if it mixes console and PC players competitively...Man, I remember trying to play Counter-Strike on PC with a controller against keyboard...no contest...but the same does NOT apply however to something like Fighting games where all you are looking for is a single input command rather than a precision selection of pixel under your cross-hair....(Controllers CAN actually be better in the FGC due to ergonomics and the shorter distance your fingers need to travel for input...) so control choice is pretty situational...
      One last bit, I would partially disagree with the slowness complaint about RE4. The speed of the aiming and enemy movement is balanced with the fact that there is no strafing, dodging, or moving at all while aiming. It's doesn't make the game worse, just different in terms of player priorities...Think of it this way...In an FPS' you can circle-strafe or if you position your cross-hair at head level and aim just to the left of a corner that turns to the right, you can literally almost do nothing but press the fire button as enemies round the corner and backpedal as they advance down the hall...Y'know how they made it more difficult in RE4? Now your gun has natural sway since it's impossible for an actual human to remain perfectly still while aiming and you can't move...thus making it more complicated...motion and combat are just separated in RE4's system...

      Technically speaking, Code Veronica isn't actually fully 3D (whereas RE4 was). Instead it uses a psuedo-3D system wherein the environment is indeed fully rendered in 3D, but the camera only pans on a fixed plane that the player cannot control - much less view objects within it from all angles - thereby giving the illusion of 3D without truly achieving it. This was used a lot at the time (think early God of War and DMC titles for examples of this) in order to maintain a higher fidelity than - due to hardware limitations - was possible with true 3D. So he's essentially correct in saying this.

Considering it's a fairly long game for a third person shooter the puzzles and enemy encounters are placed with consideration to the player's mindset, I never got the feeling of getting bored or annoyed by any segments.

    This game is so good, I have played both this and the remake which I have played 4 times, but I always go back to this, I might have played this more than 20 times across PS2 and PC, every time I play it I have a new experience even though every thing remains the same, I found so many things over the years, like shooting specific torches yields spinel and a lot more. I had to get 3 discs for this game on PS2 because I had an active addiction to this game, I would come from School sit down and just play it for hours, listen to the save theme and pissed my pants every time I fought U3, Verdugo and the Regenerators, Kaurser's fight makes my bum hole pucker up while I try to knife him, this game will always remain my favorite. The best part was that you could use your special weapon that you spend so much time unlocking to unlock a different weapon and your rank wasn't rushed due to time, Resident Evil Revelations 2 changed these things, now you can't really use your special weapon without getting a C and thus won't be able to unlock special weapons like PRL412 (example) using the handcannon or infinite RPG, this game is just so much more fun and hectic.
    PS: I am addicted to the rap as well.

    For the village section make sure you got the grenade from the crow at the beginning area of the game. Then once you go into the village take the left path where you'll break open the crate kill the woman wait a couple seconds then keep walking forward and right into the house where once the cutscene is over you'll move the shelf to block the boarded window break the barrels and grab the handgun ammo under the stairs before going up, once up the stairs grab the shotgun and break the glass to get the grenade and get the ammo off the bed before pushing down the ladder and jumping out the unbroken window the Ganados are banging on.
    Once out grab the ammo on the chimney and jump down and head into the house across from the one you was in before barricading the door and breaking the lock off the metal door and heading inside to grab the ammo of the bed, equip the shotgun and turn aiming at the metal door while standing nearby to it and when they bust it open shoot them. For this part make sure to put a few shells into the downed Dr Salvador (chainsaw guy) and use one or both of your grenades to kill of the Ganados after you knock them down with the shotgun.
    This will get you enough kills to end the village sequence (works on even professional) then you go through the village breaking every box getting the ammo from the tower and especially the 10k Ptas you got from Dr Salvador before moving on.

    When he said "This is the story I wanted to see continued", I realized that we never really got a proper sequel to Leon's journey, he appears in RE6 but not as the protagonist, sharing the stage with another 7 or so main characters and we could say RE6 was more about Ada and Jake than everybody else. Then Leon leads the 3D movies which was cool but they arent a main entry. Then he gets RE2R which was amazing but takes his story backwards instead, and now we will get him in RE4R, which again its cool but takes his journey backwards.
    Capcom needs to give him his solo main entry game again, RE9 or RE10, but a solo game, not this all over the place 7 protags game like RE6 where there was so much going on to follow or care.

    RE4 seemed like the perfect storm. It just nailed all the elements that make a great action-horror third person shooter title. I think it all just comes down to great design and amazing vision, not necessarily one particular aspect.
    The first thing is that the shooting feels psychologically satisfying. It was as if Mikami and his team decided to start making a game just based on the idea of making shooting as satisfying and fun as possible. And damn, how they succeeded. Everything from the laser reticle, to reloading animations, enemy hit reactions, poping sound of a headshot, even the intensity and moments of time at which the gamepad vibrates. Top that with the aspect of crowd control, which takes some time getting used to, and which makes you always be on your toes. Then there's the excellent level design, insane cinematography of all the action, fun campy story, and incredible sound design.
    Also, the game has masterful pacing. The ebb and flow of the game is superb. The high intensity action and big set-pieces are mixed with periods of exploration, treasure hunting, inventory management, light enemy encounters, light puzzle solving, It's all here. There's plenty of opportunity to really take in the experience and absorb the world that it creates. All of the explosive set-pieces were earned. For every cabin fight or military island attack, you had a half dozen 'catch your breath' and tension building areas, and these areas never outstayed their welcome.
    The other thing is that the enemies, and the enemy encounters are so well done. Every battle feels like a scenario that has been planned out meticulously, the way the enemies seem to hem you in and force you on the back foot, the way they escalate and have you on the edge of your seat, the way the environments are used to create a unique encounter each time. It perfectly utilizes each combat arena with specific gimmicks and creative hazards. The game is so good at creating this environment for player freedom and experimentation, while also making the enemies capable enough to push new combat experiences through their varied actions. And all of this is done with the same basic mechanics that you had since the beginning. Then of course the game has memorable boss battles as well.
    I still can't decide whether RE4 is the game of that generation or Metroid Prime. RE4 was also the game that basically graduated Mikami and his team into the hall of the game design gods.

      Couldn’t have said it better myself! RE4 is a masterpiece. Village didn’t come close to recapturing what made it so special. I’ll definitely get the upcoming remake but unlike RE2 and RE3, it really doesn’t need one.
      Only downside is it made Leon’s popularity explode. Leon was awesome in RE4 but I’m sick of him being in every damn CGI movie and really hope he isn’t in RE9 or Rev3.

      RE4 is in my top 10 greatest games of all time, I really think it is a perfect game. I can't think of any actual flaw in it, being perfectly honest. Maybe the Island section isn't as fun as the other parts? But even then I loved the fight with Krauser, the ruins, and, of course, the regenerators which were amazing.
      I REALLY cannot think of any flaw. Every section is satisfying, fun, atmospheric; the difficulty is perfectly balanced for the player, everything just works. It's a perfect game.
      I like how you mentioned Metroid Prime at the end. I remember when it was released for the GameCube back then - it was straight 10s everywhere. I never finished it because I was a kid and only got to play it for a while (my friend owned a copy) and all I can remember was thinking "this is one of the most amazing games I've ever seen. Why is this so good?". Even as a kid I was extremely impressed by the pacing and the quality of everything. I definitely need to actually play through Metroid Prime all the way. The sad part is that MP is much less accessible than RE4 (RE4 is everywhere)

    Easily one of the greatest games ever made. It’s weird how much people just don’t seem to realize it revolutionized video games. This came it on GC the same year as god of war, and shadow of the colossus. And yet for their incredible artistic accomplishments, neither of them influenced games in the years to come like RE4 did.

      Odd statement.
      The ripple effect of Shadow of the Colossus is still felt across gaming all these years later. You're looking at the topic strictly from a 'They made over the shoulder shooter genre and now it is everywhere" perspective, but you are overlooking the artistic impact that SotC made on countless games that took inspiration from its gameplay, art style, mystery, structure and general mood. I'm not denying the impact RE4 had, but you should rethink the impact SotC (as well as Ico) made on gaming. They're the centerpieces for the whole "why games are absolutely art" discussion that needs to happen every so often with ignorant people.

      @@phant0mdummy Bro, I played both HEAVILY when they came out. SoTC is still up there as one of the greatest ever made impo. People remember SoTC fondly sure, but it didn't have an impact on the rest of the industry like RE4 did in years to come. Nowhere close. No game did, not even God of War.
      The amount of games that tried to replicate RE4's style, and gameplay mechanics was truly crazy, I remember when Gears of War came out is when it really hit me. Name for me a few games that came out in the years following that did what you said imitating SoTC.
      To this day very few games feel like, and attempt anything like SoTC and that's a big reason why it's so classic and gets brought up more as the years go on because there really isn't anything like it. Other than in the past few years with games like "Prey for the gods".

      @@stevenobrien7686 a game having influence does not directly mean that others tried to copy it - it also means that games took inspiration from it. Halo CE influenced the console shooter market, as previously the only people who made console shooters was Rare (R I. P Rare). Halo CE, being popular but also good, demonstrated the ability to have shooters on console. If halo didn't exist, we most likely wouldn't have console shooters, therefore it was an INFLUENCE ON THE GAMING INDUSTRY

      @@BananasAndBees bro wtf are you on about? I didn't mention Halo, not once. Nobody would say that Halo didn't have a big influence either. Also that asinine rambling about what constitutes "having influence" was a big nothing burger.
      Just makes you seem like an argumentative asshole, not some guy who's making an intelligent point. which you really didn't make one. In fact I'm really not sure what point you had in making that comment at all, other than arguing about a point of discussion no one made. If you're trying to draw a parallel between SotC and Halo, it's no way really comparable especially considering people DID pull a lot of things from Halo's gameplay moving forwar in quite a few games.
      Get a grip bro, and don't @ me with some argument that has no relevance with anything I mentioned. And I know it's the internet, but jumping in and treating a pretty chill discussion like some combative debate out of nowhere just makes you seem socially inept. Chillout bro.
