    While it’s probably not a controversial take to say that microphones sound different from one another, getting at the heart of those differences and understanding why, or if, they matter can be more difficult. We had questions too, so we recruited Lizzy Tremaine, the music technology instructor at Sweetwater’s Academy of Music, to showcase Universal Audio’s Bock 187, 167, and 251 large-diaphragm microphones, which include both FET and tube varieties. Want to hear the difference? Check it out!

    Preferred the 167 on her voice. But good lord, her voice over mic needs some de-essing. Like sharp knives in my ears.

    These same mic designs have been sold under THREE brand names haha. I owned a Soundelux U195, which became the Bock 195, which is now the Bock 187. Wild. But it is a great mic.

    Interesting comments from others. I think the differences in opinions is due to the Transducers used to listen to her singing - i.e. Various Speakers and Headphones. Also, personal tastes. I have 52 years of extensive studio microphone experience and these all sound excellent. I have two Soundelux (now Bock) U195s with very low serial numbers that I purchased in 1997. Some of my favorite mics ever. A friend of mine has a U95 tube version which is incredible! I have an Original Telefunken ELA-M 250 two pattern that Telefunken USA said "This is Hands Down THEEE Best ELA-M we have ever heard." It has a gorgeous sound. I am not a huge U-87 Fan - but I thought that Lizzy sounded quite nice on \the 187. I liked her on the 167 more. I have a bit of experience on real U-67s - and the 167 has a similar, sweet, warm sound. My personal favorite was the 251. Clear and forward with typical Tube Warmth. All very nice mics!! Mr. Bock is one of the Very Best Mic Designers on the Planet, in my very humble opinion.

    IMO, all sound great, but for Lizzy's singing voice, the 167 sounds more round and intimate than the 187, while the 251 seems to have less definition than the other two. Again, all sounding great!

    For your voice the 251. The 167 however was very close 2nd. It was the S's difference, and in post that makes things easier.

  • @Tav_cr
    @Tav_cr Před 7 měsíci +2

    The 251 sounds more intimate on her voice. The 67 is a good option and the 87 too brilliant to my liking.

  • @JimFosterVO
    @JimFosterVO Před 7 měsíci +1

    The 251 sounds softer, less articulate, and gave a vintage lo-fi vibe to the vocal. Between the 187 and 167, it was harder to tell a difference, but both were bright and articulate, giving a clear "she's standing right next to you" presence to the voice.

    I like the 187 best of all. It doesn't have so much of the lower mid bump that the other two have. The high end was the most airy.

    • @BigMTBrain

  • @emerymarcell8898
    @emerymarcell8898 Před 2 měsíci

    Gotta say I think the 251 sounds ridiculously sibilant. Like, is the take too hot?? It just sounds like those S’s are really stabbing through and would honestly be a pain to get rid of. The 167 sounds the cleanest by far.

    is there a compressor on the singing?

    • @DaveMcCall
      @DaveMcCall Před 7 měsíci +1

      There is no processing on these so you can hear what the mics sound like. We debated on whether or not to add a touch of reverb, but decided against it for the purest comparison.

    • @this_is_jmdub
      @this_is_jmdub Před 7 měsíci

    Man, I've never heard so much sibilance in my life. Can't tell if it's the mics fault or just the singer's voice.

  • @checkitout611
    @checkitout611 Před 7 měsíci +1

    Considering the 187 is right around $1000 it seems like a steal of a deal from what I just heard. The 251 "s" sounds were a bit shrill. 167 had the most warmth BUT the mics were all placed a bit differently so that can cause some inaccuracies. They all sounded good. There is nothing I heard that could not be quickly corrected with mic adjustment and a de-esser, EQ, etc in the box. With that said the 187 is easily the winner here to me as it's $1000 and then some cheaper.

    choosing Lizzy to showcase these mics is the worst decision, because she's so cute that I can't even focus on the mics 😝

  • @TheVermifuge

    This isn’t personal against Lizzie here at all I’m wondering why all female vocalists sing like Rhianna…its like they have no other styles anymore, its in EVERY take I hear in modern female vocal performances.
    2:58 “Tssssdon’t make me tssssdon’t make me…”
    3:12: “…such THUUUIIINGSSS”
    So freaking insidiously annoying. It’s in EVERYTHING now-a-days…

    • @BigMTBrain
      @BigMTBrain Před 7 měsíci +1

      It's the nature of the beast - all eras have their trendy styles. On the "Tssssdon't": that's more dependent on how far back from the front of the mouth the tip of the tongue touches the roof of the mouth to form the "d", and whether the tongue taps or also slides a little. Such characteristics of speech can be a mimicked style, but otherwise are largely dependent on early speech influence from parents, older siblings, teachers, and other intimate, local, and regional influences. "THUUUIIINGSSS", as you put it, is definitely a stylish thing, but I hear that in singers of all eras and many genres, particularly with blues and jazz singers. I wouldn't want her to sing any differently. I consider it part of vocal style and character, whether trendy or unique. It works for me.

    • @kunkmiceter

      I blame it on the internet. People don't know how to develop their own style. Too much influence from others.

    • @startrekmike
      @startrekmike Před 7 měsíci

      @@kunkmiceter For pretty much the entire history of music, people have been strongly influenced by others. That is just how it goes. Even artists that are seen as incredibly innovative can usually (with some rare exceptions) trace their sound to artists that inspired them. This isn't a bad thing. It is just how it works.
