  • Colin likes modular buildings...a lot! So he spend way too much time studying the 18 official modulars plus the Sanctum Sanctorum* in order to rank them. Disagree with his rankings? Get in line...

    My number one is parisian restaurant. Bought it when it first came out and our first child was a baby. Never had time to build it until 2020 haha. It was still in the box. Assembly square is my number two.

    It is interesting, but we mostly share the same thoughts regarding modulars. I also rank ones like the Book Shop and Pet Store lowest, while others like Green Grocer and Parisian are at the top for me. I can tell you did a lot of research when making this video to give this ranking. It was a great watch and I look forward to more!

    Parisian Restaurant was the set that got me back into lego after 20 years. I was blown away at how much lego had grown. It really was the one that broke a trend of relatively uninspired builds. The brick bank would be my #2, very cool unique elements.

      Parisian Restaurant did the same for me! My dark age of LEGO (what we AFOL’s call our non-LEGO days) lasted not nearly as long as yours, but still around two to three years. Parisian Restaurant resurrected my passion for LEGO and practically started the collection that I own today!

    Great list. The detectives office was my first modular and perisan restaurant, followed shortly a few months later, then it took 7 years to get my 3rd favorite the palace cinema. The last important one I want is a brick bank. Then I will atleast have all modulars from 2013 to now once I get it.

      I can't begrudge moving the Police Station up a bit more. In fact, that's one that I could see rising up the list over time. I was just looking at it again (comparing it to the new Friends modular set) and was admiring it.

    I’ve seen a lot of lists like this and you are the first I’ve seen to really give the Parisian restaurant it’s due. I could not agree more. It is my favorite, along with Assembly Square, of the ones I own, although I haven’t built the Jazz Club or Sancto Sanctorum yet. Working on my theme park right now before I go back to city streets. Great job with this ranking and I specially enjoyed hearing your thoughts on each one. Well done. Cheers.

      Interesting! We have a little bit of overlap (DD, AS in top 5) but have very different views on some (GE, GG, PR). That's the beauty of modulars - we like them, but some mean more/look better to us.

    I would have a hard time ranking them as I think of them as part of a giant growing set. I guess some are not as eye catching on their own as others but they look great together. The only exception is the Marvel set. While it matches in size and can connect to the other sets, I personally do not think it fits in stylistically and overall I don't care for it's design very much.

      It could, if there are other tall buildings to fit next to. In a city of just regular, unmodified modulars, it would stick out a bit. That said, there's no reason to not include it if you have it!

  • @ValueNetwork
    @ValueNetwork Před rokem +1

    Wow someone actually has the Sanctum factored in, I’m planning to purchase that set so it’s inclusion amongst the others was valuable since I have all except the original 3 and wanted to see how it stacks up.
    Overall good list. I obviously have some different opinions (I rate the book store and palace cinema way higher because they capture a architectural style that I really like, and I will defend the town hall because it’s just such a imposing build and works great in a city layout. In contrast I’ve always struggled to place the corner garage since it sticks out next to anything except it’s 50s twin the diner: and I’m not really a fan of the Cafe corner although I appreciate what it established)

    • @buildingtogether4171
      @buildingtogether4171  Před rokem

      I like that other themes are providing competition to the official modulars - in the end, they'll push each other into designing better sets.
      These rankings are so subjective, and I certainly can't fault any of these sets too much. After all, I never dreamed Lego would make such incredible buildings 20 years ago!

    The only one I ever got was Assembly Square. I wanna start collecting some more Modular’s but they are so expensive and some are just hard to come across now. From the new ones, I really like the police station and the Jazz Club so those would probably be the next two I go for.

    My personal top 5 would be café corner, fire brigade, assembly square, parisian restaurant, palace cinema. I don't really like the town hall, corner garage, bookshop and boutique hotel (because of the light nougat) but I like all of the other ones. I don't own any but I started parting out my most wanted one, the café corner. I got all the rare pieces, only replaced 2362b with 2362a, 4460a with 4460b and black turntables instead of grey ones for maximum fidelity and with the common pieces I still need to buy, it would have to cost me around 400€ instead of 800 at least.

  • @bluecollar825
    @bluecollar825 Před rokem +1

    I love Lego but their raking in the $ hand over fist. There should NEVER be a sticker sheet for a $200+ set imho. I even cringe when they have one for the smaller sets. I simply refuse to believe that printing special pieces for high end sets is so detrimental to the bottom line profit that it would mean they wouldn't make any money. I mean stickers really do effect the final product, and not in a good way.
    To go even further it technically should be illegal in the Lego system. The point is to work with what you got. Printing out a sticker sheet is the epitome of "cutting corners" for the sake of profit. I really do hate them and don't always use all of them, but unfortunately some are mandatory.
    All said I still love Lego lol. It really is a fun hobby and nowadays some of the building techniques are for real hard enough that a little kid wouldn't stand a chance of following the instructions.

    I came into the video expecting to totally disagree with you, but was shocked that I really didn't. Of course there are buildings I'd rank differently, but overall a good presentation.
    I own all the modulars except Market Street, Fire Brigade. I have to admit that I've modified many of my modulars with upgraded interiors, extra floors or extra width to make them even better imho. The only one that I've changed nothing on is the Parisienne Restaurant, which is nearly perfect and well deserves the top spot.
    I'd have moved the Cinema up a spot or two because it is just a really creative build with a gorgeous facade. The Boutique Hotel would sit solidly in second for me because it ticks off so many positives; it's a creative, gorgeous, and fun build right out of the box and it lends itself to endless modification without changing it's core essence more than any other modular in my opinion.
    I think I liked the Corner Garage more than most, mostly because of reasonably simple mods I did to mine from the get go, such as drain pipes to hide the angle gaps, closing off the stairwell, removing the Vet and making the second floor an autoparts store, and making the top floor an inventory warehouse for the parts store.

    My top 3, Boutique Hotel, Parisian Restaurant, both for their architecture and Assembly Square, architecture and size.
    I like Pet Shop and Book Shop a lot because of building the two buildings on their own plates. This gives some freedom of choice how to place them. And because the second o es are just "ordinary" houses for living. I think the whole serie could have some more living quarters.
    I don't like the trend of building more than one house on one plate. Police Department was extreme in this, three different buildings. A police precinct should have deserved a full baseplate.
    My bottom three are the Cinema, the Diner and the Jazz Club. In my opinion they didn't fit into the line, especially Diner and Cinema. The Jazzclub is the third in a row with two buildings on one plate, the Pizza/taylor part tiny, as the stage at the club. And it lacks of a story. I won't buy these 3 sets.
    On my wish list are Green Grocer, Town Hall and Brick Bank, but possibly I won't buy them, too, due to the unbelievable prices.
