  • No one has ever put a camper trailer to a test like this! We challenge any manufacturer to do the same. If a van holds together after a test like this, you’re on a winner. There’d be very few on the market today that’d handle a beat down like this.
But, nothing is perfect and there’s always a compromise.
If you’re seriously considering a hard core Aussie made off road camper trailer than you’ll want to see this.
11 months, 60,0000km. Five Simpson Desert trips, two Gulf trips, Arnhem Land, Kakadu, two fishing trips to the eastern Kimberley, multiple trips in the Vic High Country, two months on Cape York, three weeks on the Beadell Roads and the central WA deserts…..nothing but tough. This is how the Australia Off Road Sierra ZR held up.

I'm in the process of researching/considering the Sierra ZR. Just wondering what brand/model gas stove you are using as i can't see anything similar from the usual culprits. Thanks for sharing video, it has gone a long way towards placing the ZR on my short list.

We fitted a Thetford two burner with a grill which fits nicely on the Sierra. Nothing is perfect but if you want a seriously tough and capable camper with loads of storage you can’t go wrong. I still have that same one and it has done a whole lot more since then. I really like the roof storage under the rack, you’ll be surprised how much you use it. No other camper has anything like that.

Great review, you tested the shit out of it.. but for the price and boasting 20 yrs of off road camper building, the only cons should be little personal picky things that other would roll their eyes at, but the cons you mentioned are major and reasonable, the practicality doesn’t match the toughness, they’ve built a camper to what you’ve done with it and to last. Like you mentioned though most campers will barely see a rough dirt road and couple trips a year and won’t get the intensity of use you’ve given it.
You’d expect that ball weight on a big arse caravan not a camper, wtf. Hopefully a longer drawbar will cut the weight down and AOR work with you on your concerns.
Top videos, doing one of tours would be very awesome…

Do you have much experience with patriot campers? Interested to know how aor compares to patriot.

Couldn’t agree with the chair comment more. I’ve got the same one and it is so comfy but I’ve always been aware that it’s a bit heavy and bulky and can be hard to pack away but it always comes with me as at the end of the day I spend a lot of time sitting in it. My last three month trip I had a few overnight stops where I just left my canopy door open and hung a fly net off it and over the chair and slept in it.
The frontrunner boxes are great too and even though they are waterproof when you have them sitting out in the elements you can wash them out if stuff spills and there’s a drain hole in each corner and they’re secure enough that you can leave them out with food in them and dingoes ain’t getting in to them.
Good to see such a comprehensive test review of how it’s handled some of the toughest terrain, week in, week out for so many ks and seems your biggest issue is not optioning the longer draw bar which I can relate to and I’m waiting on an extension to show up for my Tvan at the moment. Ended up grabbing a second hand Tvan over ordering a new Sierra just cause of the wait time and my circumstances changed and I needed something to use now and one came up locally to me in Darwin but a lot of the build quality points you make will apply to the Sierra as well as the ZR so nothing in this clip puts me off a future purchase

Excellent stuff Ray. Thanks mate, enjoy the Tvan. They’re a very very good off road camper! Cheers, Trent.

@@moontours9071 toughness and being able to go anywhere wise they’d be one of the best but the storage on them is a big weakness as is the awnings they come with, they should have been working with somewhere like supapeg years ago to get a 180° awning to cover the kitchen and entry that can just be set up nice and quick which is another thing that appealed to me about the Sierra. No matter what camper someone gets they’ll be compromising on something though so it’s usually a case of getting something that ticks most of your boxes

Yeah cheers Jules, stopped on the Sunny cost for now. Maybe we’ll be in one spot for a few days. That’d be nice 👍
