I think it just depends on the matchup. Ryu is better at controlling the stage and breaking shields but Ken has some monster combos and can rack up damage in a blink.
5:45 - Here’s a quick tip from a Shoto Main: Normally you wouldn’t want to block ryu’s fireball like that. A trick that Ryu players will often try to pull is to throw a slow fireball from a distance, bait a shield reaction, and then chase in after the fireball and follow up with a guaranteed shield break combo as the fireball holds you in shield stun. You either want to parry the fireball, or you have to respect it altogether. Ryu has some crazy projectiles. Edit: also this is a really well made video! You earned my like :)))
Hi! Shoto specialist here. This video was great for people who really have zero clue about Ken and Ryu, and I love that, however for the people who need some more info I think there was some misinformation in here. I'll start with airdodging out of combos and escape options. 3:06 is a bad example considering that string is a true combo, but the player was late on inputting shoryu, thus letting out Link. Ken's main combo tool is crescent kick, and its essentially a mixup. A good ken will do crescent kick for the following reasons; they want to make you guess on how to escape, thus getting a follow up, or using it for a true combo like into down smash. But its mostly the first one. Mashing air dodge or jump to try and get out of their combos is a terrible idea, as any competent Ken player will know this and will punish you for it. This is where crescent comes in. If you airdodge away especially at lower percents, Ken is most likely going to chase your airdodge with a nair frame trap or run up heavy jab into another crescent. Once ken is out of down smash range for crescent, you're going to be eating mixups. You'll have to guess what the player is going to do, so sometimes air dodging in or jumping may be a good idea if they've caught another option. Just don't be obvious about it based on your habits during the match. Yes you can hit Ken out of tatsu, but that is only if he does HEAVY tatsu and your character has a frame 3 option or faster. Ken is -3 on hit when he does heavy tatsu but this changes as percent raises, and its also character dependent. (Bowser is a good example, as Ken is actually in frame advantage after heavy tatsu.) Ken will most likely do light tatsu at around 30 percent because it sends into a tech situation, and he can get a jab lock, so be ready for that. While i'm still on the topic of tatsu, you didn't mention that both of ryu and ken's tatsu has invul. Ryu has it on both of his legs, so its a lot easier for his tatsu to go through projectiles and hitboxes, obliterating zoning ( ryu is actually a partial zoner considering his playstyle is a patient bait and punish), while ken has it on his rotating leg. He can still go through many projectiles. When fighting Ryu, a good one is going to zone you out, actually. They'll use a lot of shaku hadoken to diminish your shield or get easy damage ( it does 14 percent ), so try to avoid contact with it. If you're going to jump, don't be obvious, because Ryu can actually use the slow version to run with it and confirm off hits. Ken's hadoken is slower in terms of speed, AND startup, and also has a lot of endlag. Use that to your advantage. Ryu's is quite fast. Ryu and Ken have insane amounts of invul on their moves, with key ones being light ftilt, heavy up tilt (and heavy jab), and shoryuken. If you try to jump in on them, they'll use heavy up tilt to beat out your option, since their entire upper body becomes invincible, and it's frame 7. Don't jump a lot! they'll punish you hard for it, especially ken. Back to escaping things, Ken is mostly the bigger problem. Here is the thing, up tilt and down tilt are safe on block, so don't try to mash against it unless your character (for example Lucina, marth), has an invincible option. If Ken does down tilt, jump out between them, and if he does up tilt, roll away. Don't make it obvious though, its easy to get frame trapped by Ken. When you are blocking and can't get away, Ken will lead into roundhouse or crescent inazuma as his block string enders. These are devasting shield breakers, and crescent inazuma is slower, so if you notice it coming out you can actually roll away. Respect his roundhouse by the way, its frame 10, and its hitbox is like two characters long or something. It's BS. he's also invincible on the leg. play a patient neutral, recognize how they approach and how they get close to you. Not every shoto is going to get bodied by mindless projectile spam and camping. They have really good counters and tools to capitalize on openings. Outrange them, space. Just make sure you don't do moves within their light ftilt distance, as it can actually beat moves like inkling back air out! That's just some information to add onto the cake that is this great video! hopefully it helped someone. Also if you're being hit by Ken shoryu, DI down and slightly away, and ryu shoryu is simply away. basically left or right on your stick depending on the direction.

Avoid using this vs characters with multi hits. Only use this when you conditioned your opponent to shield, you can quickly short hop and do a descending dragon for a free shield break. (more on this on Maktheknife's channel). 9:05 - just throw a slow hadouken to the stage to cover you, focus cancel forward and either true shoryuken for invis frames or jump watch and quickly grab the edge. The slow fireball should give you enough coverage (if they are shielding in the corner waiting for you, the hadouken will stun them and push them back slightly).
