Posthumous Cancellation: Now the Woke Mob Want to Cancel Philip Roth & Other Late Great Writers.

- This week it was reported that the late Philip Roth, one of America’s greatest writers, is due to be revisited by the cancel culture brigade. Clip from #NCFCounterCulture misogyny discussion in which Toby Young of the Free Speech Union, Baroness Claire Fox & Emma Webb of Civitas discuss the growing phenomenon of “posthumous cancellation”, whereby not even the dead can escape the reach of so-called “cancel culture”.
The appetite among the witchfinder generals for finding and punishing people for “heresy” is now so insatiable that they are not going to confine themselves to the living. They now wish to morally judge the dead - akin to the ancient practice of digging up corpses to hang, draw and quarter them as a form of punishment for past deeds.

As Jordan Peterson said, “it's a war against competency.” Anyone gifted, skilled, and talented is frowned upon, and must be destroyed. They want only sheep who will follow and obey.
A sort of "race to the bottom".
More precisely anyone who uses the gifts given by existence against the rest of their species for their greed...
It happened in Cambodia. it ends with Genocide.
"The revenge of the mediocre!" Spot on, Peter!...
I watched a documentary on Mao last night. The ideology is more or less the same. Frightening stuff.
It is essentially.
Post a link ?
Evolution of Evil- Mao Zhedong. It's here on CZcams as well as Amazon Prime. It covers other totalitarians too. 10 episodes or something.
Read "a canticle for Leibowitz". The great Simplification.
I'm sure Phillip Roth would be thrilled with all this publicity!
I disagree. Philip Roth would be horrified that his work would be dismissed.
A perfect example of what Bret Weinstein and Jordan Peterson have called the "War on Competence."
So, some great artists were not nice people? Wow, what an eye-opener!
An earthy saying: "They'd put pig s---t on a wedding dress."
They've done the same thing to Flannery O'Connor at a JESUIT COLLEGE in The States!!
Yeah, well, the Jesuits. I'm shocked🙄
@@Dabhach1 Sorry, but a WOKE Jesuit??
@@johnmckillop3820 They've changed a lot. They try not to speak of Loyola and Xavier anymore.
.... and how often do we hear the term 'misandrist'?
Not often enough unfortunately
I shall have to remember and use that phrase. "Revenge of the mediocre".
As 'Peter' notes at the end of this piece, it very much "the revenge of the mediocre" and seem what has and is happening over the last year is very much fuelled and encouraged by a vicious jealousy against all who have made something of themselves be that big or small.
Is he not called Peter? Not sure the reason for the quotation marks?
I have a friend who plays trumpet in a top professional opera orchestra. I mentioned that the genre of heroic opera may be targeted. Indeed, down the road his instrument could be seen as a symbol of colonialism and need to be decolonized.
How long before they try to cancel all classical music as being too white and elitist !
Article in the New York Times last year described Beethoven’s works as an expression of White privilege. It’s coming.
Peter, You said it in one: the revenge of the mediocre. It immediately brings to mind Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot killing the gifted and talented of their societies. .
Sadly we all expect the Wokerati inquisition.
How many fingers 🖐🏻 four
Misogyny? When a high minded individual accuses me of these things I need to break out the nu-speak dictionary, which makes a defence of my character difficult if they want a response with the hour.
I didn't realise until the last couple of years how much bitter resentment there is in this country towards the majority native people, and how blatant it would become. And more bizarrely how many people refuse to acknowledge it.
All about your ignorance, denial and some notion of British exceptionalism. It’s blatant because most will not tolerate crap anymore so change upsets you, I guess you want to go back to the good old days that never existed!!
@@disct1597 British Culture is remarkable. Self hatred is pitiful. You are pitiful.

@@disct1597 I'll consider my comment reinforced
I've read Roth all my life, I'm struggling to see how he was overtly misogynistic. Maybe the stupid woke fools just skimmed through a couple of books such as Sabbath's Theater or Everyman underlining some racy paragraphs with a red pen. In a lot of his work he champions women's rights and racial issues. He will always be one of my top three authors.

George Floyd? 10 months drug free.

Not according to the toxicologist.
Probably haven’t disposed of the corpse yet so he’s probably still fill of fentanyl if it hasn’t degraded yet.
@@jimdavis6833 I didn't say he was on drugs at the time he was passing counterfeit money and roughing up the shop keeper. George Floyd was a drug addict according to himself.
Who are these people how come we never see them
They don’t seem to have gone for Marx yet and his attitude towards his wife and the impregnating of servants.🧐🧐
It’s no exaggeration to say listening to your CZcams channel is the equivalent to Therapy for me at the moment. I am sick to death of being told how to think every time I turn my television on this past year. You have a new subscriber! Thank you.
Pol Pot had nothing on these cancel culture clowns.
I think he did. You're not comparing this to genocide, right?
Pretty sure Marx wouldn't pass the modern purity test.
Just saying.
Absolutely. Didn't he have a child with the home help?
One way to tackle this, in-part, is to start buying the books of the authors these fools try to cancel. Incentives!
Everytime anyone comes into contact with a woke person... slap them. Then again. Until they leave the room.
People are becoming far more puritanical than before. A recent Guardian columnist, who was generally supportive of Roth, still felt the need to justify her defense of his work (preferring his American trilogy to his overly sexual ones etc)..Does 'being obsessed with' sex equal being a misogynist? If so, in what way? What about a female obsessed with sex? And what does 'obsessed with' mean? And how does one define misogyny for that matter? A recent review in the Guardian of Haruki Murakami's new collection said "'the narrator scrutinises and judges the attractiveness of a woman or girl with a disquieting urgency and an unexamined sense of entitlement"...another reviewer wrote of Murakami's 'abhorrent' attitudes towards women.....words no longer have any meaning. Abhorrent would surely be the treatment of women in certain muslim countries, in the concentration camps of China, North Korea and so on.......this zeal to overthrow the artistry of what has come before, and to denigrate one's elders for lacking appropriate purity, is akin to the Red Guards during the Chinese cultural revolution - the impulse, at least...i can imagine a few years down the line - attending 'self criticism' sessions at work " yes sir, i did pass a female on the street and, without checking my privilege, say to myself she's attractive"......fifty lashes, or off to the re-education centre for you for more mandatory lessons on critical theory
Time to react and stop this madness.
Brings to mind John Wycliffe in the mediaeval (dark) ages. Same powers were at work then in 1428.
Revisiting the works - and lives - of dead artists is a legitimate, and even necessary intellectual exercise.
It is of course absurd to denounce the dead simply for having prejudices that were considered normal in their own time.
But re-evaluating the art that has come down to us, in the light of our knowledge and consciousness, can be highly instructive.
And we should keep in mind that writers such as Roth practise their art fully aware that they are 'talking' not only to their contemporaries but also to those not yet born.
Language and other media make possible a conversation that continues through time.
As Auden observed, 'the words of the dead are modified in the guts of the living'.
Written 20 years ago Roth's "The Human Stain" may be the single most blistering indictment of wokeness that will ever be written. Rock and roll will never die.
I thought we learned the lesson of book burners over 70 years ago
Offence archelogy, it should go the way of the relics they seek.. and vanish into history.
Nobody expected the Spanish Inquisition.
The question can be asked is 'do the people who make this a panic - especially the academics deserve intellectual appreciation'?
Misogyny ? No one mentions this about the peaceful grooming gangs . . .
Wrong victims. Wrong perpetrators.
We cannot change our past, we've learned lessons all thru history. I think this cancel culture is now getting out of hand. My Mum, age 88, cannot understand for any way Winston Churchill would be anything other than the very brave way he handled WWII, my Mum was born 1933 & grew up in the war & remembers bombs going off, hearing the planes, using the air raid shelter, carrying their gas masks everywhere. She talks of how all the family sitting around the radio listening to every speech Winston made. Unless you've lived it, you should just leave history in the past, live in the present day. Don't knock Churchill in front of anyone over 80 is my advice!!!
I'm off to Wikipedia to see the damage done (like they did with Orwell)
Someone tell Whittle that being a pro-vaxxer and claiming to be a freedom lover do not go hand in hand.
We have some immunity to modern hysteria in our house because we have not had TV for 9 years.
They put up Trotsky, Lenin, Stalin and Mao as their heroes... oh and Greta Jetset..
Shall we uncancel Jimmy saville then?
Why not? Savile was never charged or tried in a court of law and any charges against him are hearsay without presemting hard evidence to a jury.
@@drwhatson Yes, but my point is you'll often find a lot of people who are anti-cancel culture who also hate the BBC for employing saville and want him cancelled. IMO cancel culture is a case by case basis and very hypocritical. Why has kevin spacey been cancelled when roman polanski is still making films?
I disagree some historical figures do need to be reviewed and judged by modern times but only in extreme cases should they be cancelled, such as Nero I mean everywhere I go I see coffee shops using his name to sell their hot drinks and yummy snacks, yet he was actually a very rude man, and as for his ideas on outdoor lighting options !!!!!
Meanwhile misandry abounds in our culture.
It's ironic that Roth's early novels - Goodbye Columbus; Letting Go; When She Was Good - written in the 60s but set largely in the decade (s) before, largely dealt with changing social mores, the easing of traditional and restrictive modes of social interaction into increased liberalism.....We seem to be retreating somewhat......all hail the New Puritanism!
Burn those books.
Well let's not let them.. email your MP or someone else's MP if yours is a woke Liberal Labour type.. we need laws on this from the gov..
Philip Roth is being auctioned?

An attempt to cancel Albert Einstein by Ze'ev Rozencranz, assistant directory of the California Institute of Technology's Einstein Papers Project was made only a few years ago. Rozenkranz translated and edited The Travel Diaries of Albert Einstein. Rosenkranz's accusations went viral and were reported in several leading media sites.
Einstein was labeled as racist for thoughts he wrote in his own personal diary. He disliked some of the cultures and practices in nations he visited in the 1920s and mentioned some of them in his diary notes. They were written a hundred years ago!
Rozencranz's accusations of racism amount to thought policing of private thoughts written in the context of the times. Einstein never gave his consent to the publication of his private diaries. He was well know for deploring racism.
Used to be that "Banned in Boston" was a hot selling line for the arts. If it was banned in Boston, everybody wanted to watch it, read it, hear it. A movie with David Niven in it comes to mind. "Banned in Boston" was badge of honor to the artsy set.
What goes around comes around.
I've never read Philip Roth. But now that Roth is "Banned by Woke," I am suddenly intrigued to look up his work....
When the prissy puritanical"Woke" prigs decry anything, that is at the very least a flare signalling it's worth a good look, if not a full embrace.
It's a trap. Don't fall for it.
I can’t think of one single Woke philosopher? Maybe Marx but he wasn’t Woke he was Marxist. Not one philosopher, quite telling

What a scam, eh?
It's a biography that has got very good reviews. His work is still freely available. Still; facts], eh?

Get Skyscraper. Just Like Paradise is on it.
Even in the 70's a and 80's feminists were destroying books in libraries in Australia because they didn't like what the authors said about women. They've tried to erase one of greatest ever geniuses, Otto Weininger, from history.
I guarantee that he’s seen a huge rise in sales of his books. The second I saw dr Seuss got cancelled I bought every book I could find on amazon, because I’m a massive racist and my seven year old will become the leader of the next generation of white supremacists.
Cancel Miles Davis and Charles Mingus -mysogynists utterlty. Still geniuses
Why isn’t Islam cancelled then
I'm back - yep!

So....I think we need to start cancelling ‘everyone’ who achieved great things in this world but were not perfect. Let’s start with Nelson Mandela....Mandela was once considered a criminal in his own country and a communist in the eyes of the United States, where he remained on a terrorism watch list until 2008.
Mandela’s terrorist label has largely faded into the background as South Africa marks the anniversary of his historic election victory on April 24, 1994. However, it was the dominant narrative around him when he began his 27 years behind bars in 1962.
Fairs fair.....
Just laugh at the nutters.
Oliver Cromwell - revisited
Oliver Cromwell one of history's greatest PMs. Could do with more like him today.
We never seem to hear anything about misandry, I notice.
Misogyny is one of those words that has recently become fashionable in WOKE circles. It has to be uttered at least once in an interview or rant as they generally are. It probably gains them a few self-righteous bonus points from their puppeteers. If anyone ever plays WOKE-speak bingo during one of these barages of bile, then misogyny usually gets crossed off pretty quickly.
Please cancel Shakespeare.
Blah blah blah
Toby Young and his snowflake mates need to stop whinging.
Hey Toby, you know you can explain what's wrong with the particular way in which the woke mob is criticizing Roth without pretending that they just invented the practice of reinterpreting works of past masters, which has always been a part of literary criticism as a discipline. You are on the correct side of this debate but you will lose if you continue to engage in this sort of intellectual dishonesty. Resistance to the tyranny of the far left is important; please don't screw it up.
