Posthumous Cancellation: Now the Woke Mob Want to Cancel Philip Roth & Other Late Great Writers.

  • This week it was reported that the late Philip Roth, one of America’s greatest writers, is due to be revisited by the cancel culture brigade. Clip from #NCFCounterCulture misogyny discussion in which Toby Young of the Free Speech Union, Baroness Claire Fox & Emma Webb of Civitas discuss the growing phenomenon of “posthumous cancellation”, whereby not even the dead can escape the reach of so-called “cancel culture”.
The appetite among the witchfinder generals for finding and punishing people for “heresy” is now so insatiable that they are not going to confine themselves to the living. They now wish to morally judge the dead - akin to the ancient practice of digging up corpses to hang, draw and quarter them as a form of punishment for past deeds.

People are becoming far more puritanical than before. A recent Guardian columnist, who was generally supportive of Roth, still felt the need to justify her defense of his work (preferring his American trilogy to his overly sexual ones etc)..Does 'being obsessed with' sex equal being a misogynist? If so, in what way? What about a female obsessed with sex? And what does 'obsessed with' mean? And how does one define misogyny for that matter? A recent review in the Guardian of Haruki Murakami's new collection said "'the narrator scrutinises and judges the attractiveness of a woman or girl with a disquieting urgency and an unexamined sense of entitlement"...another reviewer wrote of Murakami's 'abhorrent' attitudes towards women.....words no longer have any meaning. Abhorrent would surely be the treatment of women in certain muslim countries, in the concentration camps of China, North Korea and so on.......this zeal to overthrow the artistry of what has come before, and to denigrate one's elders for lacking appropriate purity, is akin to the Red Guards during the Chinese cultural revolution - the impulse, at least...i can imagine a few years down the line - attending 'self criticism' sessions at work " yes sir, i did pass a female on the street and, without checking my privilege, say to myself she's attractive"......fifty lashes, or off to the re-education centre for you for more mandatory lessons on critical theory

Revisiting the works - and lives - of dead artists is a legitimate, and even necessary intellectual exercise.
It is of course absurd to denounce the dead simply for having prejudices that were considered normal in their own time.
But re-evaluating the art that has come down to us, in the light of our knowledge and consciousness, can be highly instructive.
And we should keep in mind that writers such as Roth practise their art fully aware that they are 'talking' not only to their contemporaries but also to those not yet born.
Language and other media make possible a conversation that continues through time.
As Auden observed, 'the words of the dead are modified in the guts of the living'.

An attempt to cancel Albert Einstein by Ze'ev Rozencranz, assistant directory of the California Institute of Technology's Einstein Papers Project was made only a few years ago. Rozenkranz translated and edited The Travel Diaries of Albert Einstein. Rosenkranz's accusations went viral and were reported in several leading media sites.
Einstein was labeled as racist for thoughts he wrote in his own personal diary. He disliked some of the cultures and practices in nations he visited in the 1920s and mentioned some of them in his diary notes. They were written a hundred years ago!
Rozencranz's accusations of racism amount to thought policing of private thoughts written in the context of the times. Einstein never gave his consent to the publication of his private diaries. He was well know for deploring racism.

Misogyny is one of those words that has recently become fashionable in WOKE circles. It has to be uttered at least once in an interview or rant as they generally are. It probably gains them a few self-righteous bonus points from their puppeteers. If anyone ever plays WOKE-speak bingo during one of these barages of bile, then misogyny usually gets crossed off pretty quickly.

Hey Toby, you know you can explain what's wrong with the particular way in which the woke mob is criticizing Roth without pretending that they just invented the practice of reinterpreting works of past masters, which has always been a part of literary criticism as a discipline. You are on the correct side of this debate but you will lose if you continue to engage in this sort of intellectual dishonesty. Resistance to the tyranny of the far left is important; please don't screw it up.
