- Retirement - Will it make me happy?
Escape to the country! Escape to the sea side! Escape on our cruise-liner! Escape! Escape! Escape! screams the Advertisers- as if anyone who is not planning a holiday, or a different life style, must be so miserable in their thinking that only a change in scene (provided by them) will bring us happiness.
One of the biggest illusions presented is the “Escape into Retirement.” We’ve seen the scenes on the brochures: two recliner-chairs under the beach umbrella by the sea, or pictures of smiling, athletic-looking young retirees on holiday in Europe, or sailing on yachts under an azure sky.
Is it really like that?
65 here. Retired, with a 2.4, and 8 year old. It turns out that having young children is the best fitness plan and sleep aid. Happily exhausted at the end of everyday. There is nothing in this world as wonderful as a snuggle from a child.
We escaped from all the chores associated with our large family house/horses/land…..to a minimalist apartment which can be locked up and left secure so that we can travel and visit our son and wife downunder….we now live in my home city where I grew up by the beach. It’s great! We escaped work/commuting/colleagues….its fabulous being free…. we now play Saxophone/golf/walk dogs/volunteer in a Toy museum….. retiring at age 60 was the best decision.
I'm so glad to hear that, BoninBrighton. And in a way it enforces what I'm fast coming to believe as a "general trend." Those not retired so often fear it. Those who have retired are so glad they did.
Hi Tom...spot on, I mow lawns etc. for people older than myself who are struggling to maintain their homes...gives one a great sense of satisfaction/happiness..
It does, indeed, Roscoe.
Good, thought provoking video👍.
Thanks for liking it, Billy.
I agree. I have a sign that says. Attitude is everything. Pick a good one. I appreciate your sharing your thoughts. 😊👋🐿️
Love that! A good sign to keep in a prominent place. Thanks, Oscar.
My sign says ''Keep it Simple''...something I strive to do.
Only aged 58, and have long since ‘discovered’ many of the ideas and philosophical views you regularly espouse. I may not agree with absolutely everything you put forward, depending on the context, BUT there is a world of difference between you, quote, ‘lecturing’ and simply giving an audience the benefit of your life experience, and the opportunity to reflect. And I tell myself this when trying to keep my elderly teenage daughters on a steady, well thought out life course….. haha, may need some luck there - clearly a work in progress. Thank you for your dedication & care Arthur. ❤
I've been saying for years that whoever you go you are always there so if you are running from yourself, your feelings, your whatever the only thing you are changing is the outside environment not facing the problem and fixing it from within. I learned this as a younger man the hard way and by listening to others that somewhere else was better then here.. but they had never left to validate their opinion and that is all it was was their opinion based on their own wishful thinking. Me, I left and figured it out very quickly I was there and every thing I knew, felt, thought, was with me there.
So true, Jerome. It's the INviroment that's the important one.
From across the pond I can tell you are a great example of the living.
Thanks, DixieBrick. Did i tell you I lived over there for 2.5 years way back. On the north shore - Mairangi Bay. Long time ago.
I am 55 years old. Currently unemployed and thinking about retiring, since my previous job as a taxi driver does not fulfill me as a person and I do not want to continue. I could retire with a small allowance that covers my needs. My biggest problem currently is how to spend all the free time I'm going to have.
Another one that hits home. I really need to think on this one. I've been pretty miserable for a long time and I'm always thinking that retirement (still several years away) is the answer but deep down inside, I know it's not the complete answer. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
Glad if it was of help, DJ.
This is great video Arthur. ❤
Thank you, Lee.
Thank you for sharing this. " where ever you go there you are"
Technology makes sharing possible without leaving home
So much wisdom in such a short vid, Tom! You covered that topic completely. Thx so much!
My pleasure, Frank.
great video ! good job sir !!!
Glad you enjoyed it, GrandpaHickory.
Tom I'm so on the same page as the message you've shared. Internal happiness ❤
Thank you, Anthony.
Tom Ikigai is a brilliant book ❤
I'm certainly open to learning more about it, SonMinorImitsuu.
Such wise words Tom. You can't escape yourself. I've had visions of moving to another location and starting a new life so to speak, but I can't escape being me. Your spot on about getting outside of yourself. Participating in life and helping other people is definitely a key component of living a happy life. Cheer and thanks, Sean.
Thank you, Sean. You're no longer a complete novice in retirement now, mate. How long has it been now?
@@arthurthomasware5004 Now into my sixth month Tom. Thoroughly enjoying too I might add. Thank again for your inspiration. Cheers, Sean.
There's no escaping Death or Taxes it is said! And is it really an Escape if we eventually Return? For me 'retirement' facilitates a move back to the mtns where my heart resides, into my now rented housed house, and away from suburbia and my 4-plex apartment w/unruly neighbors. The rest is transitioning to a New Life where I have more control of my doings, and the luxury of Following my Heart more often. I feel very grateful!
Sounds like you've figuring it all out pretty well, Anthony. May it all go well for you.
@@arthurthomasware5004 I'm learning as I go thank you!
Right
I learned how to enjoy a quite peacefull day.
I retired to enjoy life not run, spend, travel… I did that when I was young. I retired to be with people
