Amateur On A SUPER Bike VS Ex-Pro On A £150 Bike

- Do you really have to buy a 'super bike' to set a fast time down the trails? We put this to the test by sending two riders down the same trail, one is Ex-Pro Racer Neil Donoghue and the other is our in-house amateur Mark Westlake. However, Neil will be setting his time on a £150 trail bike and Mark will be using the £5000+ custom Nukeproof Giga 290. Let's see if the bike really does matter or if it's all about the rider!

That wheel lift through the switchback at 3:52 was class
mesmerizing ! :o
not exactly "amateur" right? ha ha ha
Thanks for letting me borrow your bike Neil! Sorry for crashing it 🤦🏻♂️
"...who's that guy?"
Danny did you dirty 😆😆😆
That’s my poor B-Twin 😂😂😂 your lucky the front wheel didn’t fall out
Safety zip tie saving the day!
Surely Neil has crashed it already?
Great skills 👌😎
Great to see Mark in front of the camera, I've known him for over a decade and he's a very decent chap indeed! Please use him in more videos :)
Also nice of famous Donny Magooskl to appear. I hope you've finally checked him out 😁 (I know it's ages since that joke, but I still find it funny).
Thali
That bike looks shockingly good for $190. I'm surprised the fork even had damping for that price. I've paid more for a seat! I remember in the early 90's, MBAction tested a $100 huffy (more like $200 inflation adjusted) and it failed in a dozen comical ways.
160 used . the bike was 500 when it came out in 2018
@@sprayy7519 Ahhhh- that makes a lot more sense.
I'd love to see a blind/placebo test where people don't know if the bike is cheap or quality to see how they feel about their runs 😅
GMBN: You guys have to do these videos where they swap the bike again. Ex-pro rider gets on the top level bike and the amateur rider gets on the cheaper bike (preferably one that is in new condition)
The times I don't think will be as close :)
I'm glad we didn't have that idea before we filmed this 😂 That B-Twin didn't look like the most fun bike in the world!
For anyone interested in these various 'bike/rider' permutations, there's an easy solution; go to a race! Enter it while you're there! There's always a 'beginner' class, and that means beginning racer, not rider- so give it a try and see where your skills are really at. There's no shame for being slow, the cameraderie is incredible, and it's huge fun....pretty addictive too.
After that, if you want to justify some new bling for the bike, you just say, "well now, this will save 20 grams/be more aero/or otherwise make me faster". 😂
More of Mark please, great job taking on the pro’s
Woah fresh video! Absolutely smashing these videos!
Great to see Mark on the Channel or as we call him "Hardtail Mark" 👌
Cheers!
Would be cool to see a bike swap as well, to see how much time difference a nice bike makes for an amateur vs a pro, since I suppose most people want to know if it's worth upgrading their bike for self improvement.
Upgrade the Rockrider to 1x12, wider handlebars and see how it does. It could be quite a nice bike for a little investment.
It still has a steep head tube angle
Yeah! Although maybe 1x11 to keep the budget down a bit, 1x11 seeems nice enough for this bike.
@@hananas2 whos paying for a 1x11 with a bike like that, no offense but the suspension is practically crap.
I think mark would make a good addition to GMBN well done
hardly an amateur, he Smashed it! cool vid 👌
Not sure I'd qualify Mark as amateur. I mean, technically maybe, but the guy has skills!
I have a new version of that btwin, with a 1x and a few choice upgrades, and my experience with the bike couldn't be further from Neil's! Great video nonetheless!
I am really impressed by how the btwin performed. It didn't even break really and you were flying over those tech sections
Brakeless challenge next, great work and more Mark content please!!!
It would be nice to see how this B-twin does with some reasonable upgrades (wider bars, 1-by drivetrain, brakes, maybe suspension), as it is a very popular bike among beginners. Not the most expensive modifications, but good price to value.😉
It's really annoying to see cheap bikes get written off. Wide bars, a dropper and 1x would have made a massive difference.
I have the newer version of that bike with exactly those upgrades and I believe better geo and it handles black trails quite handedly
We've given it a couple of upgrades! You can check out how the guys changed things up here: czcams.com/video/2u3O4Ez2u5M/video.htmlsi=BWcuA-KaqQxiHQc2
@@gmbn Yeah, I've seen this one right after being releaed 😃 That's a good way 😉
Maybe there is some potential in idea to make these bikes performing possibly best for a specified amount od money. Unnecesarily only one mod each 🤑
Just get a good second hand front fork and middle shock absorber and that‘s it. Provided that it already has Aluminium stem and bar, crank arms and pedals.
as a person who used to own the btwin in this video, im stoked to see it. i now own a 2012 nukeproof scalp with over £1000 in upgrades
Which mudguards front and rear are these? Looks slick
Of course I'm asking about Nukeptoof =)
Good fun to watch! How about a main stream brand with a head to head bottom of the range to top?
Put an 1×11 on that btwin and its good enough to have fun on
Just keep the bike, Neil has enough good bikes
What about upgrading the BTWIN into something interesting with proper cranks etc.
i want to see that rockrider with an slx 2x12 and front suspension upgrade.
this trend of wide bars sucks a lot for me because having 1,55cm ride an bike with 70cm+ bars is like drive an bus.
on my two mtb 27.5 my bars have 66cm and ride like an dream
Sick DnB tracks, love it!‼️
confidence is everything. period
Maybe upgrade that btwin with some affordable components and see how it fairs. Great content. 😎
What's that jacket Neil is wearing at the beginning? Looks nice and light!
I have a budget trek marlin 6 which seems to get a lot of flak. I bought it to get me back off road without breaking the bank until I have learnt the basics again. I'd be intrigued to see one tested. Mines a 2021 marlin
Marlins are solid bikes. I have a Marlin 8, and it has served me very well on my local chunky trails.
I like the concept of this video, perhaps run again without such a cheap cheapo bike😊
That would take away from the concept of the video!
Would have been nice to see Marks ride on normal his bike and Neil ride his bike for more context. Also would be intresting to see another video on the model or two above this to find where the value starts to come into it. is that £300 or £500 or £800
Not a $160 bike if your tyres are swapped for tyres that are worth more than half the bike. Mazza tyres doing a lot of the work here ....
Nice test! Now the same test on the same tyres / tyres sizes / rim widths :)
lol, that suubtle cameo
Love that the pedals are worth as much as the rest if the bike 😂
Please have Mark on more often.
I'd love to know the Ex-Pro on the super bike speed on the same course
Now I might just have a different definition of "amateur", but from his introduction, this Mike fella doesn't seem very "amateurish" to me
Win or lose, the only diplomatic response would be to hand the win to the guy who manages your online content. 🙂
This is shocking to me. I mean it has been a few years since I have been looking at mtb prices, but if you were to spend less than $500 USD on a new full suspension bike in the States, it would be seriously damaged at the end of that first run down the mountain. I don't even think there is much in the way of full suspension options between $500-$1500.
Any full suspension bike in that price range always has stickers on it warning you not to ride it on mountain bike trails.
There's no way that cheap bike is $200. It has the same vittoria mazza tires your expensive bike has.
B twin pimp my ride edition 😎
Pretty inaccurate.. Actually the 540s is an old model (2017) that was selled for around 600€... maybe 850€ if still on the market now. The S stands for suspended by the way.
Can anyone explain whats up with the yellow tap on the handlebars?
Probably means you have paid to use the bike park?!
It was the band we were given to get access to the uplift 👍
Oh wow gotcha, where im at bike parks are free, so i couldnt imagine having to pay to ride one ha @@andydtkd
rockrider has some decent products, but while the cheap bike wasn't that great, what surprises me the most is that it is a double suspension bike for that price. Ideally, the non pro guy could drive the cheaper bike too, just out of curiosity
Plus's are the brakes actually work, the minuses are everything else 😂😂😂
I wouldnt have fun on a sketchy bike...now the nukeproof 😊
My mate and I ride Enduro a lot and have the same bike (YT jeffsy). Usually we're pretty even. Until last year when he bought the YT Capra and he started super pulling away. I couldn't keep up no matter what. He says the bike is better than him. I think the type of bike can make a big difference.
Btwin looks way funner to ride.
The S stands for suspension (refering to the rear one). As an ex Decathlete, on the bike department, I know this
That's not a £150. It cost around $500 when it was new. It's curious how GMBN's stance on Decathlon's bikes changes depending on whether they're being sponsored or not.
Remember mark from Ali clarkson channel years back
Have had plenty of good times on Ali's channel!
So a highly skilled "amateur" rides like a pro versus a former pro.
Get Mark on more often!
so the btwin in £150 for the whole bike so your basically buying the tyres and the rest is of the bike is about 50 quid
Maybe you can do a part 2 where you both swap bikes to see how well a pro rider can overcome the limitations of an inferior bike compared to an average rider.
Neither of these guys qualify as "an average rider".
Well what would you expect for a bike costing 150, now try it with a bike costing 500-1000 range and tell me it's the same.
You know it isn't,
The « S » is for « suspendu » suspended in French not for sport 😁
Less than 120mm travel 😂❤
It would have been interesting that you swap the bikes for a second run
I wouldn't call Mark an "amateur", as he was a sponsored rider at some point. He can ride. Maybe the dude he passed would be considered an amateur.
£150 is a pretty good bargain for that level of bike. However when are you gonna do actually brand new ones for that price? I.E. Apollos and what not.

That Ergon grips on the cheap bike are worth more cash than the frame :-D
Might be better 2k vs 9k bike.
Seeing the nukeproof bike😢
Lol this amateur is 10x better than me. 😸
So the "amateur" is a seasoned trials rider who's friends with one of the best bike riders in the world, hardly a good comparison is it?
That was a pretty nice "cheap" bike foe $200.
Really great video idea but feels a little half arsed, i know it's not meant to be super scientific but if you are asking these questions that people are interested to watch, please put the effort in to come out with a more comprohensive conclusion, with the amount of disruption both runs had you really should of gone and done another run, lazy corner cutting not to, what about base times for pro on the pro bike and amateur on the cheap bike, it might of cost you half a day extra but quality matters.
I think the snobbery in mountain biking has reached ridiculous levels. It’s no longer about just getting involved, the scene demands you have a £3000 FS bike regardless of your skills which is disappointing. Sure, that BTWIN bike isn’t going to hold up at full pelt down a track like that and expecting it to would be ludicrous. But for some riders it may be all they can afford, and what’s actually stopping them using that bike on the trails? Nothing. And lets be honest those with hugely expensive rigs can’t afford it either and most are bought via cycle-to-work or on some kind of finance that eventually cripples them in an agreement on a bike that they’ve ruined and is now trash.
Yeah it’s fun to watch a cheap bike get mullered by pros but as a starting point for someone developing into the sport/hobby it would be great and provide them experience over time of upgrading forks, drive chain and other components. Shame on GMBN for being such snobs
Those wheels alone are more than 200$. That bike is nowhere near as cheap as 200$
That's the cheapest bike you can find?
Pretty low effort video to not do more than one run to try and get a time that means somthing. I know its just a bit of fun but when you see the work other channels are putting in this is not great.
Everyone's always laughing at rockrider but even the cheap bike DID do the trail AND was quicker at some parts ... And they do sell way more capable bikes with better components but offcourse at a higher price.
How can a bike be made that cheap? That's nothing. Take the cheapest proper fs bike ~2k. Account for the usual profit margins, it's probably worth around half of that. That's still 6.5x as much. I'm surprised 150 covers stuff like taxes, salaries, storage and shipping.
Wait the whole bike was 150 quid? XD
That $200 bike is more like $1800. There is no way a bike like that is 200$. It has better components that a trek marlin 8.
That’s no amateur 😂
You guys are always very scathing of cheap bikes, buts all that lots of people can afford. You're really lucky to be spoilt with the bikes you ride! You could have 40 riders having fun over less technical trails on the rockrider compared to the nukeproof at £6500. Just saying...
I think it would be even more interesting to see if a super bike would make an average rider faster compared to the bike he/she normally rides.
I find the comparisons on this channel very useless. there is always some cheating. gravel vs mtb, where everyone rides different routes, for example. and so again here. The cheap bike usually costs significantly more than stated here. over €700, so is that a used price again? A real cheap MTB would be significantly more dangerous and demand more from the rider. Above a certain price, the equipment of a bike is good enough that only professionals notice the differences to the high end and you can work well with it.
The guys bought that bike for £160, it was part of the Cheap Bike Challenge series. It may have originally cost more, but if you can pick one up second hand for £160 it's still worth exploring it as an option instead of buying a brand new bike that would sell for £160.
@@Mark-Westlake Maybe, but it distorts the presentation again. and makes the title clickbait. Whenever cheap is compared with expensive, it is never really cheap. And the further you go up in price, the more the differences to high-end bikes become relativized. until in the end the difference in performance is almost 0.
It's like comparing a €5000 car with a brand new compact car. only that the €5000 car is a Mercedes E Class that was brought in. Which is of course technically a completely different level as a new 5000€ Sandero
Unfortunately, it's typical for the channel that a lot of comparisons are just for show. Pure entertainment, but little to no serious message. because every comparison has hundreds of variables that are not taken into account or are intentionally distorted.
hehe
This is not the best comparison.
You need a CONTROL. You ride the pro on the super bike FIRST.
Nope the S stands for another word for when you want the silence to be so it so you say shhhhhhhhhit
Amateur? Ok...
C'mon Neil....These cheap bikes are CHEAP for a reason!
Yeah, surprise. Makes no difference. Spend your money on a squat rack and ride more.
If you need an actual amateur I’m free 😅
Not exactly an Amateur rider then.....Come on...do it properly ffs.....Ha !
Cheap bike is okay for a skinny teen adults need better equipment 😂
amateur my asssss
You know you are spoiled with 8grand US is considered "cheap"
Literally a rip off, I can get a brand new motorbike for 6k.
As a life long mtber the prices have always been stupid but it IS getting more and more unsustainable, the people paying 9k are the problem though, if people stopped buying, they'd have to bring the prices down because there sure as shit isn't 9k of gear and labour on an mtb
Or 3 second hand bmw's
I've not bought a new bike since 2005
Unbelievable the prices these days
Just because i can, does not mean i want to. A 6k mtb in incomparable to a 6k motorbike. You don't have to buy a 6k mtb, just like you don't have to buy a 50k motorbike
Apples to oranges. You're comparing a top spec race mountain bike to a cheap road spec motorcycle. Let's compare price vs. value of a race MTB vs a race motorbike. As someone else pointed out, you don't have to spend £6k on a bike.
Bikes never used to be up to 10 grand, they were top spec and cost under half the price, the manufacturers keep knocking out new stuff we don't need, like mobile phones etc. I seen a guy ride whistler a line I think on a BMX , they are forcing us to spend big, the gap between rich folk and guys just having fun is way getting bigger, hopefully a new brand comes out and keeps it real. Mtb'er since 1992, when top spec Bikes cost a grand. Sometimes technology should just pause for a year or 3. Focus on the original fun what got us into it, kids these days come straight into mint Bikes. Should have to do mtb course first on cantilever brakes to appreciate the fun is not just money. Eventually this will happen, people can't afford a 6 grand bike, think about the kids coming through needing pure coin to keep up. Anyhow this could run, pants discussion, most people realise it's out of hand now. Peace out 🙃
