  • Thank you for watching! If you are a Sashiko visible mending beginner, please also watch this video below. I walk through the materials and tools and the basic tips for stitching which I couldn't explain in this video.
    • Simple and easy Sashik...
    The Sashiko stitches reinforce the fabric and help to prevent the fabric from stretching further. It also means the mended areas lose the stretch. So make sure that your jeans are not too tight and you can still wear them after losing the stretch in the mended areas.
    The method I used for Sashiko is called Hitomezashi.
    Hitomezashi uses a grid to create a pattern. There are many different patterns you can stitch using this method.
    I drew grids of 5mm squares inside all the circles. You can also use 1/4 inch squares instead.
    There are videos explaining some of the patterns I used in this video.
    The Dantsunagi pattern:
    • DIY mini Sashiko coast...
    (Sashiko coaster making Part 2)
    The Jujihanazashi pattern:
    • Sashiko Cross Flower s...
    (Sashiko cross flower stitch)
    The flower pattern:
    • DIY mini Sashiko coast...
    (Sashiko coaster making Part 5)
    These videos also explain about drawing a grid.
    There is another video where I mended a pair of jeans by attaching a patch with Sashiko:
    • I tried visible mendin...
    I hope these videos help you mend your garments and extend their lives!

    When i do this kind of work, i roll up a magazine inside the leg of the jeans. It prevents me from sewing the jeans to themselves 😂

      Like a darning egg?

    • @cuthulucups4878
      @cuthulucups4878 Před 11 měsíci +15

      @@chickenleg002 Yeah, it works like a darning egg but bigger! I ran to my sewing stash to try this immediately and this works exactly how my darning eggs do. :)
      One thing I did a little differently is I shoved a stuffed animal inside my magazine to give it a little more structure since mine was a little on the thin side. I was able to pack it in pretty densely and tape it up which gave me a nice firm cylinder to sew on top of. (I'm sure that with a thicker magazine this wouldn't be necessary.)

      cats are a lot more social than we think! they love to be in the same spaces as us, and like to 'mirror' our activities, like the fluffy fellow who sat on the jeans. making them a little spot to do their mirroring, like a spot with some scrap fabric, can keep them satisfied but out of our works way c:

    I have just discovered sashiko and have fallen in love with the beautiful designs. I am moved by history, too. I tried my first piece and... made a mess of it 😂 I do know enough about craft to know that it takes practice to get proficient at something. I learned a lot from this video and was happy to subscribe. I think the combination of watching good teaching and practising, even if it is not good at first, is the way to go. Thank you for uploading these videos. I look forward to watching some more. So does my cat 😂

    This is the most beautiful way of mending I’ve seen in a while. With a husband and 4 sons, there’s a lot of mending. I have 2 questions, would this work on socks? And where can I get a metal palm thimble like yours? I’ve only been able to get leather ones. I watch from Perth, Western Australia. Thank you for sharing. 🌹Rosie of Oz🇦🇺 & 🐶Omega the Cavalier🐶

    • @thegreenwrapper

      Thank you so much for your comment😻 I’ve seen Sashiko mending on socks before but I haven’t tried myself yet. The one I’ve seen had a small patch and stitches on it. One thing I need to mention is that the Sashiko stitches prevent the material from stretching. That means the socks can loose the stretch…so I recommend mending just a small area but not on the whole sock if you are going to try it.
      There is another visible mending video I’ve done before with a small round patch.
      I feel that this may work better on socks.
      czcams.com/video/8cnzQTAEJ-c/video.html
      But I should try to do a video to see if it works in socks!
      As to the metal thimble, probably Amazon or Etsy are the easiest place to get.
      But again, I have a video about making one by yourself using a covered button kit. (I’m in Australia too and I struggled to find one as well!)

    What kind of material do u put underneath the hole? Is it a stretchable material or materials that do not fray. Or does that even matter

    • @thegreenwrapper
      @thegreenwrapper  Před rokem

      Thank you for asking! I used a piece of plain cotton quilting fabric. You can also use denim (thicker fabric is harder to stitch though). But I wouldn’t use stretchable material because the purpose of this method with a lot of stitches is to ‘prevent from stretching further’.
      In other words, this is not for tight jeans. If you need some stretch, it’s better not to use this method. I hope this help😊

      I was using two different thimbles in the video I think.
      The black one is a soft type I made. You can learn how I made it in this video

      The metal type is a commercial one. It’s Clover Adjustable Ring Thimble with Plate. I think you can find it on Amazon or Etsy.

      The metal thimble I used in this video is a common type for Sashiko.😊
      Mine is from Clover. The product name is ‘adjustable ring thimble with plate’

    I’m interested to know what you are pushing your needle against, is that some sort of thimble?

    • @thegreenwrapper
      @thegreenwrapper  Před 9 měsíci

      Thank you for the question😊 Yes, it’s a Sashiko thimble. We often use a long needle for Sashiko and the thimble helps to hold and push the needle. The one I was wearing in this video is from Clover. The product name is Adjustable Ring Thimble With Plate.

    May I ask if it is okay to mend sashiko using jeans thread instead? they seemed to have the same thickness and I've been lookin for sashiko thread all over the town but still I cant find one

    • @thegreenwrapper
      @thegreenwrapper  Před rokem

      I’m in the same position. It’s not very easy to find Sashiko tools at local shops here in Australia.
      For denim, jeans thread may be a good option. Try it on somewhere on your jeans first to see if it’s thick enough (maybe with double threads?). I’ve also heard that some people use Perle Cotton thread. It looks a bit glossy but it has the thickness (I don’t have one but I think size 5 or 8 are good).
      I have a video showing some Sashiko tools and their alternatives here:

    Do you do a back stitch on the front or back of your fabric for sewing patches?

    • @thegreenwrapper
      @thegreenwrapper  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thank you for the question😊 For this particular piece, I made knots and hid them between the garment and the patch. I’ve worn them often and washed them many times for the last six months or so and they haven’t come off.
      I haven’t tried a back stitch for mending yet but I’ve seen people using it too, so I think it should work.
      This video⬇️ shows how I hide knots between a garment and a patch (around at 8:00).

      @@thegreenwrapper Ah I see. I was just asking if you. knew which way to do the back stitch. Can't find an answer on Google. I think it's on the back of the fabric but not really sure

    • @thegreenwrapper
      @thegreenwrapper  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I see. There are a few different ways to do a back stitch.
      I’m showing how I do for Sashiko in this video⬇️
      How to start and finish stitches without making knots
      czcams.com/video/5llXYm38rwQ/video.html
      If I’m using a back stitch for mending, I probably will do the way I did at around 8:35 and I try to stitch through the thread too to make sure it’s secured. In the video, I stitched back from the front, but you can bring the needle to the back and back stitch from the back too.
      Otherwise, you can also do a back stitch a few times just like normal hand sewing or embroidery. I suppose that should be inside of the leg so that it won’t disturb the pattern outside.
      For mending, the area you need to mend is likely to be stretched and rubbed frequently. So, I recommend to make sure the back stitch is secure and the thread won’t come off, before working on the pattern. Good luck with your project❤️

      @@thegreenwrapper No I mean in general. I know how to back stitch. I'll try to explain what I mean. If you cut out a square for a patch, I think you sew around the whole square on the back side or wrong side of the jeans/pants. Or it could be the same on the front side. That's what I meant lol

    • @thegreenwrapper
      @thegreenwrapper  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I’m really sorry that I’m struggling to understand the question (due to my poor English).
      In this video, all I did was to sew around the hole (as you see in the video) and stitched the Sashiko patterns.
      I didn’t sew or baste around the patch. The Sashiko stitches hold the fabric well and the fabric won’t fray much if it is stitched well with Sashiko.
      As to the back stitch you are talking about, unfortunately I’m not sure if I understand well.
      I’m sorry that I couldn’t help…
      I hope you will find the answer to it❤️
