    This video saved my life!!!! Thanks to you I'm now a strong, independent, refrigerator fixing woman 😂. I do agree that a shot of the drain hole would have been helpful, but it wasn't detrimental.
    Also for a very oblivious person like me a talk through of how to take out the ice maker would have been helpful, but again, not detrimental.

    thanks so much. i followed the video and that is definitely where my problem was coming from. the ice was terrible and the hole was plugged. with your help I fixed it myself when my dad, father in law and husband were unable to fix. they probably didn't care since I was the one cleaning it up every day (water on the shelves etc) but I am proud of myself!!

    I wish that I had seen this before I worked on mine the first time. Just a couple of tips: The holes for the two upper screws in the ice maker are slotted, so you don't have to completely remove them; otherwise you are liable to have them drop into the ice maker. This also makes it easier to re-install. I had a little trouble getting the screw holes to line up properly, so I held it up a little and then took an ice pick through both holes (carefully). I couldn't hold onto the screws (too short), so I used a 1/4 socket with a little bit of paper towel on the head of the screws to hold them tight. I also had trouble getting the back of the bottom panel to snap under the back panel, so I finally put it in as best I could and then pushed down on the back end and it snapped into place.

    • @bradybell6129
      @bradybell6129 Před 6 lety

      To clarify, I was having trouble getting the screw holes on the bottom panel to line up properly. (This software does not allow you to see more than one line at a time, at most, so you can't proofread until after you have hit enter, then it is too late.)

    Thank you so much for the exact repair instructions. Your U-Tube video was so clear and appeared to be similar to my 20 year-old Whirlpool top and bottom refrigerator. I believe the problems with the ice-jammed opening was due to the power outage of the Maria or Irma storms, wherein power was out for twenty hours. All is fixed now because of you. Great job!

    Thank you for this video and great instructions. My husband and I worked together. The most time consuming part was getting ice removed from drain tube. Husband hooked up a vacuum cleaner with a small hose which fit drain tube. Continuous filling with hot water really worked. Hopefully our old Kenmore will keep on working. It must be at least 25 years old!

    We have a 17 year old Kennmore fridge which all of a sudden started leaking from the back. We put pans to catch the water. The pans had to be emptied daily.I got fed up enough to take a shot at repairs. The ice maker is top left and back of freezer. I removed it carefully as it is driven by electrical plug connection. Removed three mounting screws, unplugged it and removed it. I took the back plate off and looked for a hole as described in some of the text here. I boiled water and used a turkey baster to force hot water in a drain hole behind the back plate I removed. At first the hot water was splashing back but eventually started to flow freely until the drain was clear. Works like new and saved a replacement $1000 fridge.

    Great instructional video. We removed and cleaned out the P-Trap located on the backside of frig and 4-5 days after cleaning out the
    P-Trap it was still puddling water on the inside bottom of freezer side. Your video showed that we didn't inspect and unplug / clean out the defroster hole leading to the P-Trap from the inside so we got a turkey baster and added hot water to the coil pan which quickly melted all the ice blockage and once we could here and see the water dripping into the pan (it was visible from the front foot panel) we were done. The P-Trap video and your great video showed us the process and we got it done. Total cost $1.99 for the Walmart turkey baster.
    Our frig is a side by side Whirlpool but they all have the same principal. Worked Great. Thank you from Texas.

    If you don’t have a turkey baster, just boil a kettle of water and pour slowly into the drain hole with the aid of a kitchen funnel. This works generically for MOST similarly designed over/under Refrigerator/freezers regardless of manufacture. Good video.

    OK GOOD video and that is how you remove the problem. BUT That does not FIX the problem and you will be doing this again real soon if you don't fix it. The clog is frozen water nothing more.... When you get to the part where he clears the drain with the hot water STOP and LOOK at the defrost wire right above the drain TAKE THAT WIRE and bend it down about 1/8 inch closer to the drain only for about 4 inches on the left and right side above the drain. YOU ARE JUST MOVING THE WIRE ABOUT 1/8 of an INCH TOTAL. This wire is there to melt the ice so it can drain. If the water after a few weeks still leaks into the lower part then you do not have it fixed and you will need to do the same thing PLUS bend the wire down another 1/8 inch. I own this unit and I did this and I have not had any problems....

      You are a savior DELLISTX, there are countless video's online on how to "patch" this problem just as this tech did. Ive performed this exact video's procedures 4 times and lastly tried wrapping copper wire around the heating coil and ran it down the drain hole to try to keep the hole defrosted. But i will be going home to try lowering heat coil 1/8" to fix the root of this mystery!! Thank you!!

    • @dannichols6261
      @dannichols6261 Před 4 lety +1

      @Haiti News Info Haiti News Info DELLISTX referred to ~ 6:30 , and no, I don't think he means to move the thermostat wire (if there is one)! Even freezers that are similar to the one in the demo can be different, & I'm pretty sure DELLISTX may see a wire in his freezer that doesn't show in this demo. There *is* a *black rod* running just above the channel at the bottom where the drain hole is. That black rod is the *heater* element to defrost the coils that are above it, and *maybe* some freezers have a wire coming down from that black rod, toward the drain hole. If there is (or if someone *added* such a wire), that would be to transfer more heat from that black rod heating element *down* to the drain hole, to help keep water from *freezing* there & clogging the drain. However, her *may* alternatively be calling the black rod a *wire* , and may be suggesting to *bend* that rod, which I would think would be a *very bad* idea! I *think* heating elements like that have *wires* inside them, which could be broken by bending, destroying the defrost function. That's just a guess on my part, though.

    Curtis
    In most cases food or debris get stuck in the drain assembly. If this keeps happening to you every two weeks then I can tell you what will correct your issue. Order a defrost heater and defrost thermostat. You either have a weak heater not radiating heat to the drain assembly or you have a defective defrost heater that is shutting the heater of prematurely. When you get the parts in open up the doors of freezer and refrigerator and shut off the unit for 24 hours so all ice can thoroughly defrost. When you put in the defrost heater make sure it is bowed down about 2 inches from the drain hole, you can bend it down without damaging. The heater is what radiates heat to prevent the drain from plugging. As a secondary safety you can take a piece of copper wire and wrap it around the heater and put it in the drain hole about 2 inches. This used to be a kit the manufacture sold to radiate heat from the copper wire to the drain hole as a secondary safety. I would do it so you can resolve your problem permanently. I have been a technician for 30 years and guarantee this will take care of your problem, I have done over 500 of these fixes myself. If you need parts call 1-800-830-5465. Your explanation makes sense. After posting my comment the other day I searched more youtube videos on replacing defrost heaters and noticed what they called a heat transfer strip in one video. It just looked like a piece of metal wrapped around the heater and down to the drain. I like your idea of a copper wire instead and I'll be able to find a solid core long enough around the house. Maybe I'll double it up some how.
      Thanks in advance.

      Hey Brad,
      I'm not sure what ***** will say but I used about an 8in. length of 14ga. solid copper wire. I folded it in half around the heater element and twisted it all the way down. Then I pushed it into the drain hole. It's been running like that for almost a year now with no problems. Best fix ever!

    Thank for this video ! My Kenmore 106 from 1993 was completely different than shown, so I proceeded curiously and managed to get to the drain hole , fortunately it was only debris blocking the hole. This model drips that model into the top back of the fridge into a little pop out reservoir that also was full blocked from the usual black slime. Cleaned that up, the hole it went into was clear so all is good to go.

  • @user-ls3uf5lm4f

    I have similar Kenmore. Ref part started freezing food, then a few days later I saw water on ref shelves. Long story short, removed ice maker, removed back panel of freezer (may have to defrost ice a bit to free it), and then saw ice buildup in drain tray and over drain tube. Removed back of refrig to see drip pan. Then in the freezer part, used hair drier and poured hot water on the ice to melt it. Soaked water run off with towel. Continued until water flowed down drain tube. Checked in the drain pan to see the water.
    THEN from what I saw on another video, added an 18 gauge cooper wire apox 12" long to the lower heating element. There are two elements, one on top of the cooling fans and one on the bottom. These heat up during the defrost cycle to melt ice. Water drips into the drain tray and down the drain tube. Careful when working around the fans, they bend easily and cut fingers even easier.
    Looped one end of wire on the left side of the lower defrost element Then looped the other end on the right side of the lower element while shaping the cooper wire down to but not touching the drain tray (C shape). This should put heat right over the drain tray and tube to help melt any ice buildup.
    ALSO from what I read about one of the causes of this ice build up in the freezer, warm moist air rises in the drip tube, meats the cold freezer air, and the moisture freezes up in the drain tube causing the ice dam. So I purchased two small elbow tubes and a worm clamp. Using pipe tape, connected the two elbows into a U shape and added them to the bottom of the drip tube. Use pipe tape and clamp to secure to the bottom of the tube. When water drips from the freezer, some of it stays in the U and prevents warm moist air from rising to the heater. Similar to the U shape in plumbing to keep sewer gases out of the house. QED so far.

    I just had to do this on a 17year old GE model GTS22JCPBRWW and it was dripping water onto the top fridge shelf. I did the turkey baster thing until the water drained itself. Thanks for the video. Screw buying a $1200 + dollar fridge. Theses older ones last much longer it seems like than these newer ones I see all kind of problems from people like the compressors failing within 2 years and water and ice dispenser issues etc. The only thing I had to do to this GE fridge in 17 years was both fans. 1 in back bottom and 1 in freezer and that's it.

    If hot water does not do the trick, try using an air compressor connected to the bottom drip tube to see if you can get air flowing up through the drain in the freezer. We just did it this morning after having issues for several months. Ours is a top freezer. After a few short moments running the air compressor, the freezer drain started to bubble and some water and ice shot out. Then the air started flowed freely up through the drain hole. We kept the air going a few minutes and immediately tried flushing water down the freezer drain and whoosh, the water went right down. And I flushed a LOT down to be sure. We used a bucket and noticed that several tiny pieces of styrofoam came out with the water. That had to be what was clogging the drip tube!

    David,
    Thank you for making this video. Good lighting, sound, and camera work. It worked. I have the icemaker model but after removing 3 screws it came off too. No turkeybaster so I used a funnel and sponge to pour and remove hot water on the hole!

    Thank you! My Kenmore (top freezer) had a icemaker that wasn't being used (no plumbing available), so had to take that out too to get back panel off (only 3 screws, but not easy!). Did not reinstall icemaker - makes more room in freezer anyway. After drain hole was thawed, someone else poured water into the hole and I watched it run into drip pan - success! Bet that saved a $200 service call here in CA. Thanks again!

    Wow, we had the exact problem. I thought it was a water leak with the icemaker. With the bail up, water was still forming in the bottom of the refrigerator. After removing the panels as you instructed, we saw the ice field. The drain area was completely frozen over and clogged. I would like to mention that the drain pan under the frig was bone dry. Once cleaned out with the turkey baster, water was draining out as fast as the baster was delivering. Thanks for a well presented tutorial in solving this problem.

Thank goodness I found this on here. I followed the directions and frig works just fine. smh. I thought I was losing my mind when I could "see" the water was coming from INSIDE the frig but couldn't find where the leak was coming from. For 3 months I was using a kitchen towel under the drawers to capture the water; changed it once a week. On here looking for something else and thought I see if someone else had my frig problem and voila! lol smh THANK YOU!
