  • Third day of training these unhandled sheep and we manage to halter them AND pet them UP CLOSE! Plus, we reveal ALL their names. Also, more of the baby calf, submitted veggies to the fair AND getting ready to build a “wrestling ring” (mobile sheep pin for the ram and the wether). I don’t know everything there is to know about sheep, but I do share what I learned from last year’s bad experience. I also give you an extended on Field Question and Answer with Master Shephard, Greg Judy inside DIY Abundance: bit.ly/DIYAbund...

Just buy 4 - 16 foot gates at Tractor Supply, stick them together, put a LARGE caster on each corner, weld a tongue in the center of one side so to pull with the mower to move!

I know I've said this before, but I'll just keep saying it, if it's ok: your videos are always so inspirational and full of positive hope and I'm not at all a farmer. Your videos reach many of us with more than "just" farming tips :)
    Thank you !

I love that mobile pen. My farm is a bit too hilly though :( I try to keep them 2 pastures apart but last year the ram got out (3 lambs in early March, 3 later when they were supposed to happen). And this year the dude got out again! This time it will be in January which is crazy bad timing for up north. I need to solve this one. Re: naming. My first ones came on March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday (I teach nursery school, love kids' books). I named one Theo, one Sally. Next one Spot. Then Rosetta, Horton, and Maisie. All are Suess if you are familiar with the books :) Too bad Theo, Spot, and Horton will end up in the freezer...

The halter needs to pull from under the chin and the nose band needs adjusted higher on the nose with the head piece behind the ears. It will make taming easier on both the sheep and y'all. Y'all are doing a good job with them!

Aunt Phillis must have been grateful for the milking this morning. Her nether region was close to exploding! Our little calf is showing strength of character too. Rebekah you can do almost anything to the sheep once they are put in the shearing position they just relax. Keep at it as they have made great progress in a very short time. The sheep are far more comfortable with short people at the moment.

  • @crayhack

Moving sheep with the harness is pretty difficult. It's mostly just for holding onto them imo. I'd carry or move from behind. Also if you want to catch them, grabbing a back leg is the easiest

You might consider mounting a tow bar/hitch on the front of the "wrestling ring" and larger pneumatic wheels for flotation over the terrain/holes.

When I first got my ram which is a hybrid (goat mix with sheep) I sat in a chair with a leash on him for about 1 hour every day right when I got out of school. by the 3rd or 4th day he was following me everywhere it was like I was he’s Sheperd then about a few months later he was getting aggressive so then I got him two ewes and then he got even more aggressive lol I guess that’s why there called rams cause they like to ram i mean he pushed me in his water bucket that’s how bad it is but I still love him 😂 there’s my sheep story lol oh and his name is billy

Yikes, those poor ewes are still very spooky! Aren't they being a bit too stressed by all the handling? I don't know sheep, but with most animals, I would be wary of taking it that fast... Good luck with the wrestling ring!

Who is the lead ewe? Or has it not been determined yet? Is she ,whoever she is, going to have a bell 🔔 or is that an old wife’s tale? (I grew up in the midst of several farms but never on one. My dad worked for the telephone company.)
