Saving 40 Year Old Paint! - Polishing My 1955 Chevy Nomad

- Today we are going to shine up the faded paint on my 1955 Chevy Nomad. To the best of knowledge this car has had 1 repaint in its life. The paint wasn't original but it has to be 40 or so years old.
The paint was faded, cracked and keyed. There was only so much we could do with the beaten up finish.
A little time, elbow grease and my electric polisher sure changed the look of this old hot rod. Not perfect but I was super happy with the finished product.

I am so glad you went all in and bought this car. The fact that it gives you joy when you look at it, is justification enough for its purchase.
Yeah it sure does make me happy haha
@@DDSpeedShopthat's a sign you should restore it....
Whitewalls and Bel-Air spinner hubcaps
i don't understand the urge people have to tell you to finish a car. they are never finished.
@@davevandevenne1330 I agree, they are just more finished than the last time they were worked on. They are never really done.
I'm 57 years old and I have only seen one 55 nomad in my life now you have two
Dan,Thats a lower grill bar open ends and radius is different and the proper hood bar has closed ends ....... Glenn
That Nomad is quickly becoming my favourite of all your cars.Great old car
The smile this car puts on your face says it all.
The fact that you polished it at all shows how much you love this car
Dan out of his comfort zone polishing a car ! Looks so good though !
I was a painter for 45 years so it's nice to see you've turned to the shiny side! Even if it's only temporary!
What a lovely machine! All the very best and continued success in the new year buddy!
Thanks man! Right back at ya
Take care of it! Nomads are way cool!
“She mangled” and “they can’t hear you nod” back to back, you’re on fire 🔥 😂
After all your hard work Dan, you desrve every ounce of pleasure you get from the Nomad
This is exactly how this car needs to be done... Tells the story and looks great doing it!!
Wow that is something you don't normally see, florescent lights gleaming off of a shiny paint job in DD Speed Shops garage, very nice, I bet you are very proud of owning that Nomad.
Haha its a rarity
Now he'll have to paint frankencar in the other garage
I think this '55 is your 2024 Power Tour car. Maybe add some vintage air for your comfort. Everyone will be soooo jealous. This Nomad has the most crome on it of any '55 I've ever seen.
The Nomad just keeps getting better and better. It’s perfect….store it now and drive the wheels off it all summer.
Definitely the crown jewel of your collection looks amazing ,it brings a smile to my face just watching you work on it it’s a forever car
That car is a really really nice , the perfect driver , not so immaculate that you are paranoid to park anywhere, but one you can drive the hell out of it .
I never thought I’d see the day when you would get excited oven a bone stockiest 55 Nomad ……well done Dan good for you and maybe not so good for you , because now all the viewers that want all your Chevy Tri-5s restored will be on you like flies on open wounds.
It’s one great car .
You should make a list of everything you need to do to finish the nomad and lay it on the dash so when you take it out of storage, you will know what needs to be done.
Men don't need lists
I'm sure ill remember...
Dan forgetting adds to the fun. 🙂
@@DDSpeedShop Lol, from the guy that's forgotten cars he owns!
@@DDSpeedShopyea, you always do. 😅
Hot Dam that Nomad looks sweet. You got a car you love and even your eyes smile when they see it. I'll miss seeing it too for a while. Happy New Year
Yes, we do like watching people take care of their stuff.
Look that shine like a Mexican grill . Now all it needs is some pink glitter....Sweet !
DUDE! That thing was your cruising Nomad, now it's raised to the level of going to prom Nomad! Looking awesome. This channel needs more Nomads! haha
Don't forget hood ornament and chrome molding on edge of hood throw some touch up roof its awsome.
I think I might end up in jail if I take it to prom....
WOW!!!
Sure can see a Difference!!
Old girl is looking great! Good job Dan.
Finally, a car with a presentable paint job. I'm just fucking with you. Great car.
I would die a happy man with your Nova and that nomad. Don’t sell the nomad. You know you love it and no money will ease the longing after she’s gone.
What ah wonderful investment, you have, an absolute Gold Brick on your hands.... Keep up the good work... P/S your living rent free in Morski's head, now that's some quality entertainment.... 😂
Please someone who is a good paintless dent guy help Dan with the hood and roof, that is a really nice car, with a little metal and paint touch up it would be a great driver, keep it up dan and danni you are great embassadors for the hobby...
What a difference on camera the hood between passenger side and drivers side. Huge. We never had dull paint cause we painted them to often. Paint job products were cheap. Four guys and a case of beer got the job done in a afternoon. If they were to wrecked they went to the bone yard. Which is what you're working on now. But yes we hated car crushers back then too.
Wow, she shined right up! Looks awesome! 😎👍
I love old single stage paint. You get the old chalky stuff off and it shines up lovely. Looks great!!! Good looking car!!!
That paint was DEAD! lol Nice job bringing it back to a shine. You and Dani both deserve this car. You both have busted your tails of to get to where you are. We all know that you're not the only one to miss and go see your car while it's in storage. I'm one that does the same. This car is going to put SO many smiles on your faces. Good for you both!!!
Your appreciation for your Nomad is accurately portrayed in your comments, nice to see you are maturing,LOL😊
And the no mad gets the old spite shine, looks great !
It looks great, you did a great job and did a good job fixing that banged up hood too begin with, cherish her forever.
A dentless guy can bring them out like nobody's even messed with it or anything. They're really good at it
This is why I like shiny things, now when you walk in a store, you can turn around and look at it walking in :)
Before and After is awesome well worth the effort Dan.
Man that turned out great!! I love polishing old paint.
Just what I needed to see to get back on my ‘64 Marauder. Thanks Dan…
Your 55 Nomad is simply put .....a good investment Dan. A keeper! As a diehard 55 lover you scored a winner.love it.coming to my show guys? In Minnesota? March?
Heh. Dan can't stop bangin' stuff on hoods. love it!
the whole reason i got a car was so i could bang stuff on the hood...
Dan, doesn't the bottom half require more attention because of road salt. I know for fact salt doesn't disappear until late August or early September. Salt stays on the road, and each rain gets its evil properties raging again. So Dan, please spend a little more time on the bottom half. Awesome, Nomad Dan. Simply a beautiful wagon.
Looking really good, Dan.
I also vote for a date with PDR.
I'm digging on it. To late now but usually if the parts get bent together they still fit together. I would use the all thread adjustable rod and just tighten them up a little at a time. Saves on parts and come on Dan it's not perfect. She sure is looking good though. That is how obsessed restoration starts...lol.
Stupid suggestion ? Take hood off while in storage for the winter and get it perfected at a body shop ??? That car deserves perfection over time ! Just a thought ! Happy new year.D& D 🤘😊
The Nomad is looking good! My only minor quibble is the wheels. The dog dish caps look good, but the wheels should be white or body color. Or get beauty rings.
My first legal car was an 11 year old 61 Impala. Hadn't been waxed in years. A friend gave me a 1/2 can of Turtle Paste Wax. With in a couple of weeks, I had one of the shiniest cars in the school parking lot. I love the Old painted cars, the new clear coated cars are just tooo shiny that it takes away from the color and the body lines. I love the Skyline Blue!
I was zonering what the name of the colour was.Thanks.Its my favourite.
Dan you have metal addiction I know of no cure it's call love of old metal. It's is contiguous.
SHINE in the New Year, Dan-O! Looks sweet!
Dan you got me excited when you said you were going to put cragers on that bad ass nomad, I think you would really like looking at it with cragers, lol love that nomad!
I'll watch you polish a car, anytime. You so deserve it. It shows everybody that your hard work pays off. Very proud of you, and I'm a Ford guy.
Great show keep up the amazing work be safe my friends God bless all looking forward to 2024
Mortskie Repair is jealous! Duff would love to have a ride in that car!
As a wagon guy I love this car.
What I love about this car is it nails the: Nomad, circa 1965 vibe. The paint, the steelies, the 327 -- it all is what a young dude would have done when these were just used cars.
She's lookin' really good...I say ya oughta squeeze the piggy bank a little bit more, squirt the wheels body color.
Nice work!
Happy Noodle Ear, Dan & Dani...really glad I stumbled across you guys so long ago (Thanks Peg!)
I didn’t know you had one of those fancy machines to paint shiny!!!
Dan, I know you really love the Nomad Try to score a set of full size wheel covers THAT would complete the package. That is one Bitchin car and a keeper.
Take a picture of your ride and hang it on the garage wall.
Love it. Never let making it perfect get in the way of making it better.
Wow nice job polishing that old paint...
Great content as always. Get a clay bar kit. It will work wonders on the paint.
You actually do have a little shiny memory square in your head. You didn’t know it was there. Nice car Dan
Amazing what a little work can do! It's looking really good! I can it a 30/30 paint, at 30 feet away and 30 MPH it looks amazing!
I see Pebble Beach in the future for this Nomad. Glad you gave the car the bird. 😅
Looks good Dan
The Nomad is awesome! Congratulations on your wise purchase. Just a suggestion, paint the wheels the same color as the roof then pinstripe the wheels matching the aqua color of the body
SAME THOUGHT, IT NEEDS SME POP IN THE WHEELWELLS
Not sure watching you”polish your rod” is an appropriate family activity!! 😱😱🤣🤣
Man I wish I was there . I just love polishing old Cars there's nothing more satisfying bringing old paint back to life 😊
She cleaned up real nice Paw!
Everybody needs at least one shiny classic amongst the hoard of cars. Glad you have one now. You seem excited about it which is fun to see.
We really enjoyed this episode Danny! It was a pleasure to watch you polishing your beloved Nomad. You have inspired us to care for the cars we put together this past year too.
Love the music, reminds me of
Linus and peppermint Patty joined a rock band!!!!
If anybody complains about how you do the work on your car’s have them send pictures of their cars, with proof of ownership. I do really like the 55 Nomad and it is a beautiful car. Thanks for your channel, long time fan.
Oxidation is so easy to remedy. I did this to 1972 C10 with the heaviest Mothers wax cutting compound I could find (was trying to get down to primer in spots, for the patina look). It was oxidized like yours really bad before I started. Then I waxed it normally after that. Finished that and took it to a body shop for door alignments. They swore I had clear coated it, LOL. Asked me if I wanted a job 😂
I think you should get with your fellow Canadian @detailgeek and get him to clean it for you. It deserves that kind of love at least once.
You can put water along with the polish to keep wet a little longer. Save the empty polish bottle to put your water into. Stretches your polish as lot
another tri 5 saved! well done Dan
Nice Looking ride Dan
Yes I’m a weird from the antipodes as in New Zealand bro , not Australia mate. I like the dents it tells the life your cool wagon lived. Gives it character and you’ve got the only one. Looks like a different car. Shows how much work you’ve done. 2👍🏾👍🏾 up bro.
Outstanding AF Dan but I like Good Ole Cragars with spinners and Raised White Letter Tires!!
Magnifico. The sealing and buffing did wonders. I think it is worth taking to the "old master" to get the spots , key marks and missing paint, along with the hood and roof . Great job. Best '55 I have ever seen. Thank you for sharing.
Regards,
Marc
True Definition of a "survivor"! Well done!
DAN, the other really cool thing about polishing up the Nomad is the bright 🌞 smiles from your lady when she sees it, priceless! Thanks for the video 📸.
Dan, I love the dings and dents. Shows her scars, she earned ‘em.
The old girl is looking good ,great job
Ready to go into storage and collect dust again. 👍
Dan seems to be slowly Morphing in to Murr...will be off to Florida all winter next!
Wow! Kick ass! My prediction: if you ever sell it, you'll forever regret it.
Hi Dan & Danny, HPNY. Just put the hood bar on it with the screws on each end, and move your way to the center, the hood should follow the bent progressively. If not, at least it's attached with some screws and looks better from a few feet away. ;)
Awesome find !! Just your style. Looks clean.
It's looking awesome indeed. Bring it to life again. Keep up the great work.
I love the 55. My dad has a 4 door the same color. Check the hood bar. The ends were opened. I think that is the lower grill bar and not the hood bar. Keep up the good work.
A good proper wash and a clay bar wold have doubled the results. She still looks good though brother keep jamming. Tell Danny hello for me . DDSpeed shop 2024! 🎉
It's a really nice car a beautiful car
Looks good Dan it may not be perfect but she is looking very good.
I'm glad you brought this car. We all have the ones we wish we'd bought or kept.
That polished up beautiful Dan. The car looks SWEET. I would love to see you try some Cragars on it, as I think that would really be the cherry on top, but I know how much you love your Steelies. And on the grille bar. Is it possible you could put longer studs in it, and try to pull the bend out of it by tightening the nuts slowly and equally? I know you don't want to pull the studs out, but you can always fix the holes. Just a thought. Thanks for entertaining us
Yep looks really good
I would pull the hood bottom out to match the trim piece and very carefully warm the trim piece and CAREFULLY press the trim piece a little flatter. Between the two you can make it fit nice.
