Worst Brake Job Of My Life! This 1955 Chevy Nomad Is Beating Me

- Today we tackle the front brakes on our minty 1955 Chevy Nomad. I bought a simple, direct fit, bolt on system. So of course it needs modification.
The axle disc conversion went on without a hitch. The drop spindles needed a little customization to fit properly. Otherwise the front end was all together in a couple of evenings. The real problem ended up being the brake pedal.
Since this nomad was a "top of the line" model it came with a unique power brake system. The power brake pedal and linkage was NOT going to work with this after market kit. So that's where a lot of time and patience went.

Just finished in my garage. Glad to see someone like you is out there so I don’t feel alone. Thanks for your hard work and fun content.
Thanks buddy!
@@DDSpeedShopwell well....well.

@@DDSpeedShopwhat brand is that light you are using? Looks comparable if not better then the cyclops
I watch DDSS on CZcams while I am working on my project. It helps with the grind and struggle.
I lost it when the tie rod end fell off the table the second time. 😂😂😂😂
Another great video Dan,I work in the service department at a GM dealer and am about 4 years from retirement so I enjoy watching young guys like you building cars when I get home lol.Ive been inspired to look for a 69 firebird and recreate my first car when I retire.
The nomad looks fantastic lowered. It has the perfect stance now. Knew you would get the brakes taken care of. Looking forward to it rolling down the road. 👍😎✌️
A definite front runner for sure BUT I must say the OG 55 is the star of the Bunch . Cheers 🇨🇦
With this car up on the lift you can really appreciate how straight it is. The fender, door, quarter panels line up nicely. Dan while you are working I am always looking around at the cars and your shop. Great job!
Dan you are really good at explaining things for the less experienced. Yes, without failure the castle nut in the drop spindle kit will sit to low to catch the cotter pin. I experienced that many times. When I ran into an old funky power brake master cylinder on a GM that was so shot it could not be rebuilt or I could not source parts for (possibly like the one you have but I don’t know) I would go down to the junkyard and find a half ton pickup with disk front and drum brakes and pull that master cylinder and proportioning valve and install it. In most cases it was set up next to perfect then for the front disk, drop spindle conversion I was doing on the car. If anyone goes that route just be careful to make sure it will fit if you are running a big block. Small blocks are never an issue. You may have to tilt it up with a big block and then you have to make sure the hood does not hit it or the motor since the motor can torque up towards its edge a tiny bit. You can usually get it to just barely fit. If it won’t fit, you can get a more expensive smaller Chinese replacement booster kit online, quality unknown and without failure won’t stop nearly as well as a junkyard special. I have bought two over the years that were absolutely pure Chinese trash that just would not stop a car well enough and were dangerous to depend on. They will not give you your money back and blame it on you that you didn’t bleed the master cylinder correctly or you have to big a cam and not enough vacuum. One time I agreed with them, I had a big cam, I bought a vacuum canister and a vacuum pump for their piece of junk booster and it still wouldn’t stop well. I removed the canister, pump and their trash, installed a junk yard special and the car stopped so good and hard you needed your seatbelt on so it didn’t throw you through the windshield. Buyer beware when it comes to power brake booster kits online. Never really had any problems with no name Chinese drop spindle kits other than the castle nut issue you clearly explained.
Thanks buddy. I really appreciate it!
Thanks for the tip, will all/most GM masters bolt right into a tri-five? Or is there certain years to look for? thanks.
I just sit and hoping a new video must Come soon. And here it just pop up. Greetings from sweden😊
I admire your "Make it work" can do mentality. It doesn't really matter what the issue is, you can and will figure it out. Because there is always a bunch more waiting to be figured out. And so it goes......
🗿💨 a few of us knew what you were getting into deleting that treadle vac system. Thanks for sharing Dan 👍👍
Man it's a brutal setup
@@DDSpeedShop I've seen many but yours is the only one that I've seen with small Power Brake pedal and pad. Appreciate your ventures you share👍🗿
@@buckeyejim2989the ones for sticker shift are very rare. If in 55 you were ordering Tredal Vac brakes, most times you ordered automatic transmission. The pedal for the auto is much more common but still rare. PS rare does not mean valuable because the system is garbage.
Your not going to sell this nomad, this should be the pride of your fleet! Great job on working through the problems Dan!
That nomad is looking awesome love it Dan
As thread engagement goes, 2 times the thread diameter of engagement is good. The bolt/tie rod will break before the thread will pull out. As a Tool and Die maker, I have found that to be true. Even though it doesn't seem like enough.
Ah. That's good knowledge. Thanks man!
Wow! That's a lot of stuff to take in. I dig how it's coming along Dan.
I really dig the Johnny Reb violin cut of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" (hoorah hoorah)
Even with the struggles, the upgrades are worth it. Its obvious the aftermarket hasnt figured out the booster upgrade if it already had power brakes. Alternator upgrade is also less problematic.
Thanks for bringing us along on this journey.
Thanks buddy!
I’ll admit, I do enjoy watching your channel and I’m impressed by your knowledge. I think what some people don’t understand, is that you are not building a total resto mod, yet you’re doing your best to make/get a pile of old discarded and broken parts/pieces reformed into a single driving force of automobile history. Nice job 👍🏼
Jist building fun drivers. I love it
Great job Dan, you always get it figured out and done! I look forward to every single video you put out. I'm so happy I found your channel a couple of months ago!
I'd hate for you to have to sell any of your cars, love to see you be able to put them all in one big garage! Still digging your program. Carry on Sir
Hey Dan
Watching from Kalamazoo, Michigan USA
Dan, You made the perfect choice for the brakes. No need to use antiquated brakes that kind of stink anyway. Front DRUMS are sorry! You are making this Nomad super cool and useful as a daily. You might even want to put Electric Power Steering off a Prius on it. No HP lost to a big bulky pump.
Dan, that conversion worked out really well. Now the car will stop better than it ever did originally.
I like the poverty hub caps but I would do baby moons and trim rings , your car, your call. Love your content and never miss a video.
Turn that black booster mounting bracket that's upside down to right side up and it'll raise the booster up 1.5" then you'll just have to cut a circle hole in the firewall so it'll go straight through to the brake pedal without having to drill a hole In the pedal....
The old way to get tapered roller bearings on the front of your 55 was to get front hubs off a 59-65 Chev car . Hubs fit right on the original spindles . I have had tapered roller bearings on front of my 55 since 1973 however I am finally getting ready to upgrade and put disc brakes on the front . Thanks for your informative videos.
Dan,
I think this is what you were asking .
Original power steering used the same steering box as the manuals.
The assist came from a cylinder attached to the center of the tie rods, (where the lines go)
Also the pump was on the back of the generator.
Generator was a special unit, with an elongated shaft out the back, which drives the pump.
Hope that makes since.
That system where the power steering pump runs off of the back of the generator was used by Chevrolet at least through 1960. That system makes it a challenge to switch to an alternator.
I agree,
Not sure of the year, but my guess is they changed to an engine mounted power steering pump, around the time when Chevy went to an alternator.
Early power steering is so smooth and easy (when working properly).
Almost a little to easy and sensitive.
Save these parts and look for that generator $$$$$$
Just Wow. Your knowledge of these old Chevy cars is very impressive. Especially since you are always saying you are not an expert. Great job figuring out the pedals. Also an alternator will be a major upgrade. This will be an awesome car when you are finished.
Nice work on the brakes. Pedal, too. The new Nomad is looking great!! Cheers!! 😎
Thanks buddy!
Hey Dan 👋, thanks for sharing the fun. It does look good. Drop down. Have a great evening ✌️
Great job getting it together nice that you have spare parts to use.
Hey Dan the Nomad looks great 👍 Your car was either factory power brakes and automatic, or stick shift with manual brakes. Gm did not build stick shift power brake cars factory! So here's my opinion on how your car was new from many years of experience! Most if not all cars that come with power brakes had power steering! You would occasionally see a power steering car that did not have power brakes. But I've never seen a power brake car without power steering! The idler arm is a little longer on a factory power steering car and there would also be a bracket for the ram on the left side of the frame above the lower a arm! I believe your car was a fairly high optioned car new. Regal Turquoise India ivory color v8 2 barrel automatic power steering power brakes power windows and power seat as well E Z EYE glass! Your car was commonly referred as a power car for all the power options! As far as the Treadle Vac power Brakes in 1954 the master cylinder was under the driver's side floor and they was also 6 volt cars.GM invested 300 million into the "New" 1955 Chevy and they made huge improvements over the 1954 Chevy. The weird bracket is called a swing arm for the power brakes! Sorry for the long text. I vote keep both nomads and sell all the rest, buy more Tri5s and keep Building 👍 Later Buddy
Thanks dude! I'll have to check if there's a bracket for the power steering.
My 1970 GMC came with power drum brakes, with a massive Power Brake pedal in stainless lettering no less. no power steering, it was a lot closer to the floor. but it worked well with my now non power disc brakes.
Back brake disc conversion came out great and The stance looks awesome with the drop spindles. Before you know it will be seeing that car driving. Keep up the great work and the cool videos 👍✌️🇺🇲
My son and I are body swapping a 52 Chevy onto a 95 3/4ton 4x4 5 speed truck we are keep 95 floor and firewall. The 9 year old is doing all of the work and I would never have chosen to tackle it or gotten this far without you as inspiration I love this channel I follow schmoo, glitter, discord ect you guys are my favorite!!
Thanks so much!
Thanks Dan. I usually get your telecast nap time for the grand son. Been arm wrestling doing all new lines and brakes on my 69 chevelle.
Awesome job on getting the brakes system together and working. Sweet. Keep up the great work.
Good work Dan !! I can watch you work all day long 😊very funny and cool to learn from you 👍🏼
When you disassemble the front suspension on a tri-five Chevy and many more cars place your floor jack under the lower control arm near the lower ball joint. Run a small length of chain from the front axel of the floor jack to the frame. After you break the lower ball joint loose you can ease the lower control arm down slowly releasing the spring. If you replace the springs with shorter ones you can use this method to reassemble the suspension. This also works if you are just replacing the ball joints or the spindles. Works good on cars with no engine. The chain keeps the car from rising as you jack it up. Only the spring is compressed.
Dan, bolt engagement will be as strong as it needs to be as long as the bolt is inserted longer than the diameter of the bolt. 1/2 inch bolt 1/2 + engagement = good.
There was no doubt in my mind you could make the pedal situation work. Especially after all the floor work and panel work you've done.
Love the look of dog dish caps , I would find some thin beauty rings to finish the look
You figured it out and you won!,,,
Love this Nomad! Keep it up!
I went with camaro front disc..lowering springs and power Pinto rack & pinion..six speed Tremec out of a Viper and 69 Chevelle.12 bolt posi with 3:73 gears and Alston Ladder bars.
My tri Y collectors were comped to me before going on the market..my high school friend took over his dad's Muffler shop and built the headers for the 32Ford in American Graffitti...Sonoma County has a 4th street and used to cruise in a 59 Ford Galaxie with 427" Fe block and 4 speed manual..this was in 1964..fun place to grow up in!
The Ford was all stock looking..we called those cars "sleepers"😂
Love seeing you keeping them alive!
the Nomad is looking great, the ride height is sweet, nice job
Hello Dan, the hole on the pedal should be lower on a power brake vehicle than a manual brake model. Something II learned on my C10. The geometry needs to be different. Moving it down a little made a world of difference for me. Oh, pedal had to much play or travel before engagement. Great videos, take care.
Nice car, good find Dan.
Shew, my little simple mind was overheating trying to sort that out in my head lol. You're a helluva problem solver Dan. Car looks awesome dropped!
Haha thanks buddy
That thing is looking sharp, nice choice to drop it. The stance not the tie rod, lol.
Brother Man you might have mist your calling on what you would be phenomenal at and that would be as a real down to earth Shop Instructor at a public school in a normal average school zone as in Blue Collar area. You keep things simple and down to earth. You might get a little heat on the language but man you sure do keep my interest and definitely wouldn’t want to skip your class. As always thank you for doing you and bringing us along with you on your adventures both good and bad. Please keep doing you and definitely keep that camera rolling Brother Man.
Just got off work at 1:30a.m. watching me some super cool dd speedshop..
Good job Dan. That is a terrific car. Hope you really enjoy it.
I hope you get the Borg Warner overdrive going. I have it in my ‘58 Chevy, and I love it.
#1 issue I have with your process is...please build a bench or three on casters or hinge them to the wall. HATE seeing that tie-rod get dropped on the floor TWICE. Also...I was screaming at you to change the brake pedal from early on. You finally realized that was the correct way to go. But love this stuff. Dan. Dan's Speed Shop.
This was a very interesting video Dan . Like I said before the black wheels and poverty caps are my favorite.
you nailed that stance! too bad ya had to cut up the power brake pedal before realizing you could yuse that spare. that's likely one of those things that will be super hard to find for restorers and worth its weight in gold but then i don't know how rare those power brake systems are. i like how you're doing this car!
What a nightmare ...love the stance ..im about to start plumbing the brakes on my Studebaker gasser..fun stuff ...i love my new shirt btw ..
Dan there is a good chance this Nomad has a factory 4.11 rear gear. Had a 57 wagon gray and white I picked up in 62. Had the 265 two barrel engine with the three speed with overdrive and the 4.11. Put in a Sun tach. Would wind first gear out to 7 grand and we would just hit 35 on the spedo. Car was the terror of Lyndhurst Ohio until it thru a rod in 65. Weren't many cars that could keep up with it up to 50
At first I thought wow that thing sits great ! He shouldn't touch it ! But WOWSERS does it look way better! Awesome Job ! I also just noticed those cool Corvette script valve covers . Could this car get any cooler ?
They make a tool to get the master push rod adjusted to the proper length. It’s like $25 U.S.
Looking good can't wait to see it finish 😊
Dan.
You should have a junk yard so you'll have all kind of projects to spend time on.
dont worry abot the tie rods, just get them close and do a string alignment.
Anti seize on your brake.pins is a good thing. Anti seize on the back of your buddies door handle PRICELESS!!!
Hahaha
My '56 Buick had a treadle vac system under the toe board. They didn't work very well when new. One year only design. Back in 2019 I converted it to a modern booster and dual master cylinder with a an adaptor panel made by Battleborn. The conversion does delete the driver side vent but uses a new pedal and standard GM parts. I wasn't concerned with originality as much as I just wanted to stop, which it now does quite well. On my Buick the generator is down low on the passenger side so I didn't have the interference issues you are having.
Yeah thats a worthy upgrade for sure
Good call on using the old nut. The two washers are too sketchy. 👍👍🇨🇦
The factory brake setup sounds like a pain, but pretty unique - Install your better stuff for yourself, but SAVE THE OLD PARTS and sell them for big bucks to a concourse restorer! :>)
Oya it's all keeper
Take out those peddles and switch them out for the right style peddles from another tri five. those peddle are not worth the trouble modding. SAFE AMOUNT DRAG LINK OR TIE ROD END EXPOSED THREADS? You need a minimum threaded length engaged equal to the diameter of the stud. If 5/8-18, you want 5/8" or more thread engaged in the sleeve.
Power brake pedal height is lower than manual brakes. That’s normal.
I don't understand why he thinks that's such a big deal. All cars from the '50s to the '70s brake pedal that is power looks exactly like that
This looks so rad man. You did a great job on it. I would buy it off you if I could.
You are a BOSS! I love your taste in music and cars. Cool Nomad!
Mate. It looks good.
The wheel bearing grease has to be for disk brakes for extra heat.
Look great with a drop and slight rake!
thats just cool. old car that does look like is been off road racing. except that one steering thing. i was so ready to put my time bet on the melt time on your car. thanks morski. just kinding .glad to you got you "super car"
Should have had a drinking game today on how many times you said cantilever. 🤣
Once again fine job. I don't know how you do it but you do it.
Great video Dan, love the content lately
But you Do as you like, it is your care less.
I just like what watching people do whatever they want to do.
And fight doing it
Love the 55 Nomads, but I really want one of your 56 tri-fives
Love the drop spindles. You make it look easy to do. That's going to be a great ride when its done.
Looks like crap.
Very Nice Work Dan Coming along nicely
Thanks for the video Dan.
Merry Christmas to you both.
Another great video my man. Hey Dan, you need to do and alignment on the table too 🤣🤣🤣
You are not alone those cars can be a handful keep working on them you will get a head I have four that always give me head acks
Your tenacity is second to none Dan. If you have the drive when you’re my age to Adam this, then by all means you’re golden. Or a bit screwy. Enjoy watching man but wtf is this crap with Mortske? One of y’all needs to back off cause it’s not necessary for the childish games. I do think he’s out of line so bethe big man and confront him and put an end to this. I enjoy both channels equally. Keep up the great work Dan
Dan on the clearance problem why not just a couple washers on the bottom studs of the bracket on the fire wall which would move the brake system up enough to clear the generator
That nomad is super clean under the dash....impressive
Another great day in the garage DD.
Keep up the good work. Love the new music. Keep on keeping on
I like that 2 in Drop on your car .putting one on my 62 impala looks great
Dan, brakes look great you'll have the quickest stopping Nomad in Winnipeg!
Dude!!! Bravo!!! Bravo!!! Great video!!! ✌️
Dan if the steering rubs grind it(so when you have a 350sbc engine and you put a 400 crank un it they call clearing it). So I call it clearancing the steering .lol Dan nice video have a good day
The black Nomad was my favorite, but dam the blue one is even better! What a difference the drop spindles make. Can't wait to hear it run after you do the tune up. Headers, and a nice dual exhaust? PEACE ✌️
It drives so nice!
The Corvette valve covers on that small block are freakin sweet! 🤘
Sweet!
My other Nomad...
Yep.
DD SPEED SHOP!
WOOOOOOOOOOO! :)
Save all the original power brake stuff, that's a rare option and worth a lot to restorers.
True..
I am not sure of the price, but as a factory option, the power brake system, was a unreal amount of money.
So there are not many around.
I vote you call them Somad and Lomad to distinguish between the two cars.
Glad ya switched pedal👍 👌
