I'm 55 years old now, bought a Maverick 88 made in Eagle Pass Texas when I was about 22. It was about the same price then, too! About $175. CDN. Short barrel model for bear and cougar protection in British Columbia. That thing went everywhere with me or my friends, backcountry hikes, canoe trips and fishing trips that lasted 1-3 weeks. Since we were young and didn't have many guns then we also used it lots to shoot clays and just mess around. Eventually after about 5500 rounds of lots of slugs and buckshot with a liberal amount of trap ammo thrown in, it broke the (singular at the time) operating rod. I was actually a little astounded seeing how much it had endured over years of neglect in the bush. But the parts were easy to fix. Since of all the abuse in the bush there was virtually no finish left on it so I just spray canned it a few years ago. Still have it...

I have own my maverick 88 since 2010.
I killed my first duck with it.
Never had a malfunction and i would say maybe 3,000 rounds or so.
Limbsaver was definitely worth it to replace the harder rubber pad.

I find your point about the Maverick 88s longevity rather bizarre, as the Maverick 88 is literally just a Mossberg 500 with a crossbolt safety on the trigger mechanism instead of the receiver mounted tang safety. That's it. I don't recall you ever saying the same thing about the Mossberg 500. All other parts are 100% interchangeable with the Mossberg 500, including the barrels. Though you will have some functional issues swapping trigger mechanisms; a Mav 88 trigger group in a Mossberg 500 will not be affected by the top tang safety, while a mossberg 500 trigger mechanism in a maverick 88 won't have any manual safety at all.

@@larryl.3878 i can solidly confirm to you that's bullshit:
I own 3 maverick 88s ( two 5 shot mag tubes, one 7 shot) and 2 mossberg 500s (5 shot tubes), and multiple barrels for each.
The 5 shot tube barrels are 100% interchangeable with any other Mossberg 500/Maverick 88 5 shot tube barrel within the same gauge. The 7 shot tube barrels only interchange with other 7 shot tube barrels. The only other mossberg pattern of barrels are the 590/835 barrels, which use an open slot similar to an 870, and the 535 barrel, which is nothing but a 500 barrel upsized to 3.5 inch shells, but isn't interchangeable with the 500/88 pattern barrels.

    • @m1910rcb
      @m1910rcb Před měsícem

Interchangeable parts doesn't necessarily equate to same longevity. While most of the parts will fit (and operate) in either gun, they are not always made of the same materials or held to the same standards. Chinese auto store parts will fit your car, but do not typically have (nearly) the longevity of OEM parts.
This is the case with 500/Maverick. Maverick parts nearly all have lesser fit and finish, to varying degrees, especially the receiver. There are more mim parts in the Maverick, including the trigger mechanism. Many of the parts are foreign-made, further calling quality control into question.
Essentially, there is a physical reason it is a $250 shotgun and not $550- many of the parts are just slightly lower quality and looser tolerances. This can certainly affect longevity.

    • @burnyburnoutze2nd
      @burnyburnoutze2nd Před měsícem

@@m1910rcb buddy they literally use 95% of the same parts and are made from the same manufacturer... the only reason the mossberg 500s cost more is because of the top tang safety mechanism machining and the forend assembly using a metal tube in most variations vs what the maverick 88 fore end has, and some variations of the 500 that use a different finish. Otherwise they are literally the same gun to the point if you go on mossbergs website to order parts for them, the maverick 88 and mossberg 500 parts are labelled identically except for different finishes and small number of parts that are different enough, mainly the safeties.
Point is, If i gave you two current production mossberg 500 and maverick 88 bolts, shell latches, shell lifters amd barrels, you wouldn't be able to tell me which ones came off of which unless i intentionally picked mossberg 500 parts that aren't blued.

An interesting video. A lot of us are not rich so we make do with what we have. For a good part of my life I made do with a second hand Savage 311 in 12 gauge, a Stevens pump shotgun in 20 gauge, a Winchester Model 190 in .22 LR and a Sears bolt action rifle in .30-06. They were all stolen in a break-in in 1980. Then I bought a $45 H&R Topper single shot in 12 gauge. That was my primary firearm for dove to deer. It worked but I had to replace one part between the firing pin and the hammer 3 times (I used it a lot, and the part was a casting). I finally sold it. I now use a Maverick 88 with a smooth bore slug barrel. Recoil is seems to disappear when I am hunting. I am so focused on the game that I do not feel the recoil. I later picked up a second barrel with removable chokes so I can hunt other critters. I was a soldier for 20 years and know that maintaining firearms is key to longevity. Mossberg knows that there are plenty of us gun owners living on a budget which is why the Maverick88 and Mossberg 500 sell so well.

I picked up a maverick 88 last summer when I was asked to join a trap team through work. I bought the cheapest shotgun I could since I didn't have one and I took it out and start busting clays. I'm sure I don't have the eye for what's good/bad with a shotgun for trap. I'm likely north of 1000 rounds through it and it still runs fine. Works for what I need it for. Will I upgrade to something "better", sure but I'm in no rush.

If someone can't afford to spend a lot on a shotgun, this is probably the best option they can get for reliability. I have the 20" barrel 7+1 security model, and I'll most likely be keeping it forever. I had planned to trade it in later and upgrade, but I'll just save up for the upgrade and have this as the backup. :)

I grew up hunting and shooting, but after I was in the Army, I kind of lost interest in shooting for a long time. With the way the world is going, I decided I needed to get back into it and had 2,000 dollars total to allocate to firearms to prepare myself and my family for the worst case scenarios. I ended up going with a Glock 19, Zastava M70 and a Maverick 88 combo that has the security and field barrels. The 88 isn't as nice as the 870s and 500s I grew up with, its not a 2,000 dollar Benelli, but it has never malfunctioned and works great for home defense and hunting. I would have preferred a nicer shotgun but I put the money into my handgun and rifle. I don't regret the 88 at all. Its an amazing shotgun for the price. It will do anything you need it to.

I bought the 12 gauge "88" as a 20" barrel 7+1 capacity home defense shotgun.
With its intended use I do not foresee extremely high round count usage and it functions just as slick as other Mossberg shotguns I have owned.
In all honesty if this weapon ever sees more than 200 rounds fired through it including practice rounds that will probably be surprising.
So for my intended use honestly paying $500+ dollars for a "better" gun really does not make a lot of sense.
So the "88" definitely does have use scenarios where spending more money to accomplish its intended task does not make a lot of sense.
Better to spend the money saved on the less expensive shotgun on a case or two of buckshot!

Ive used it to hunt turkey its gotten me 3 of them ive used it for waterfowl and well as taken one deer with it. My 20 gauge has around 5000 shells through it was mostly birdshot for clays but it handels buckshot snd slugs and hunting loads great. Its my smoothest pump gun by far all you do is hit the pump release and the pump falls freely i freakin love my 20 gauge maverick. After awhile i stopped using it for hunting and cut the barrel to 19 inches and it served as my main home defense until i got my 12 gauge maverick now my wife uses my 20 gauge as her home defense shotgun. My 12 gauge maverick ive had for about 2 years now it it serves as my current home defense ive taken a few shotgun classes with it plus tale it to the range every month or so and put some buck and slugs through it and its been nothing but great like my 20 gauge. The crossbolt safety is horrible. I much prefer the tang safety of the 500.
It would be more shootable with a wood buttstock. The synthetic is too light in 12 ga., especially with slugs.

TFB TV did a shotgun burndown with this gun. It took 500 rounds in 77 mins with no failures. And those 500 rounds were a hodge podge of different shotshells. Not a single cheap Turknelli could hold up. This gun is just as affordable, yet holds up to way more abuse. Not to mention the abundance of after market stuff for it. With the money saved, you could trick this gun out to your specs.

I have owned my original Mav 88 for 18 years (30" barrel and single action bar) and used it on many hunts but Steve is correct that any plastic will fail eventually (delighted to hear the 5% of you who it hasn't failed on yet). The connection to the forend for the action bar(s) is simply molded plastic around a metal tab, which is terrible. I had my first forend break loose (most likely why they switched to the double action bars) on a hunt, and it was really frustrating. Bought a replacement (no improvement in design) and happened on the next hunt. I've had friends where even the stock double action bars on the 88 broke loose. So I ended up buying a Mossberg 500 forend tube and action bar assembly, which has a metal arm-to-metal tube connection, and installed that. It allows you to add any style of Mossberg forend on the tube without it having to take the brunt of the action. This solved my issues and is still one of my most accurate and fun shotguns to shoot, especially for the price. All that being said, understand what you're getting for the $250 mark and know that, like everything, you will be replacing something if you use it regularly. Lots of fun upgrades for this gun as well, so do some exploring. Love this shotgun so much though, that I bought the 20" barrel security HD version and still replaced the forend with the Mossberg 500 assembly. Appreciate your work Steve and keep up the great videos!

A thought on it being a kids gun, most important is fit if a kid is climbing the gun you are going to have issues, also you can hunt down some extra light target loads for the first shooting you can get the recoil down to very manageable levels even in a pump. I think your review was fair I think this is the king of the sub $300 price range. Is there nicer stuff absolutely but it almost all comes with a higher price.

I think it all comes down to personal preference. But those people making fun should be aware that pump guns are like a Lada Niva mini SUV: they are utilitarian guns. They're not meant to be the most refined gun on the market. They're designed to go bang every time (you can acomplish that with a heavy trigger) and also be used on the hardest climate conditions. But I also like high end guns with fancy wood, nice triggers and light recoiling. In the end, diversity (when it comes to guns) is the spice of life 😂😂😂

Mossberg sells a gel recoil pad for 10 bucks. This greatly improves the gun. It’s not my favorite shotgun. But shotguns are my favorite. So I have one for a backup to the backup. Good revisit video

I've had a Maverick 88 for years. I have several shotguns. One thing to keep in mind, the Maverick 88 is a budget shotgun, made to compete with the low priced Turkish and Chinese shotguns. It's not going to be as flashy or optioned as the more expensive guns. My Mav 88 actually has a really smooth action. It is a fairly light shotgun, so it does seem to recoil a bit more. My Mossberg 590 is my go to, but the Mav 88 if ok. As a Mav 88 owner, your video isn't wrong, but a lot of people have a personal investment in their guns and feel they have to defend their choice. I will end up giving my Mav 88 to my son, so I DID replace the pinned forend with a heavier duty Mossberg 500 tubular forend/action assembly, as well as buying a shorter barrel. But, I never had any issues with the pinned forend.

The problem with reviews is you can't measure an apple to an apple. You wouldn't review a Chevy Sebring against a Porsche 911. The 911 will kill it in every category except price. That's why you have classes of things.
The sub $300-400 shotgun market is a class. Against other weapons in that range I think most would say the 88 is pretty damn good. Up against a $2000+ Silver Pigeon most would say it is pretty bad.
TFL would be wise to preface reviews with that fact and temper praise and criticism appropriately.
Most would argue that the 88 is a great gun because what it delivers matches what is expected. It's the old beater truck you have on the farm that just refuses to die. Everything, including the trigger pack is user serviceable. This gun, with proper care and maintenance, could last forever.
My major gripe with the gun is the corn cobb fore end. If slide tubes would ever be in stock I'd replace it. The stock is meh but a simple replacement with a Magpul SGA is a worthy upgrade. If you can turn a screw you can replace the stock.
Mav 88 is a great first shotgun. It won't let you down and if you decide you like the hobby you can upgrade to something with the knowledge learned from your first weapon.

I’ve never shot a maverick but I do have a tristar cobra III it’s a little more pricey than the maverick at $300. The cobra is great with a 5 year warranty. The cobra III is pretty much a Benelli nova clone without the rotating bolt.
First shotgun I ever purchased and I’ve used it for everything. Never failed me. You should review the tristar cobra III. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles but it’s good.

The 88 is 1-2 hundred dollars away from being a POS. It runs. Not smoothly or comfortably, but it runs. Definitely appreciates cleaning and lube because it will fail if you really abuse it. Bought an old 870 at a gunshow for the same price and it beats the 88 in every category besides being the best shotgun to have around for others to shoot

There is a gentleman in the comments that said he had a maverick 88 that always jammed. It’s unfortunate that he happened to get a lemon, but it does happen even with expensive guns from time to time. But I have to say the percentage of getting a maverick 88 lemon is pretty low, unless you happen to be the person who unfortunately ends up with one, it does happen it’s just not a common occurrence. Now in my own situation, i’ve owned both and still do, a maverick 88 and Remington Wingmaster for decades, and neither one has given me any problems, yet. I’ve never cut my fingers on sharp edges loading on either one and I’ve never noticed any difference in performance between the two shotguns. I judge quality by reliability and I have to say the Maverick 88 fits that description. I also like it’s all black look and styling.
You should watch the TFB TV video on CZcams the torture test firing 505 rounds through the maverick 88. If that doesn’t convince you that this is a well-made reliable shotgun, nothing will.

First let me say I appreciate your values very much and I do like your reviews, I think your tone might have something to do with negative reviews, little condescending , your whole vib is more positive with expensive shotguns and I don’t think people pay much attention to trigger weight on shotguns, as much as I get my triggers down to 3-3/12 lbs on my Glocks and 1911’s I couldn’t tell you out of all my shotguns which has best trigger, when we go out to shoot clays we just shoot them, pump shotguns gonna kick, Maverick not a real heavy gun so definitely gonna kick just like single shots, sxs’s and over and unders, without adding anything weight bout only thing that helps, most Mavericks are bought for home defense I would guess, little recreation or hunting thrown in, average owner probably won’t put 100 rds through them much less 10,000. James Reeves did one of his burn downs with one, 500 rds, 2 3/4” and 3” magnum, no issues at all, this probably more extreme than 99% of owners will ever do, Maverick’s worn out from use few and far between I would imagine. Anyway all this just my opinion for what that’s worth.
You have a great channel, you’re an incredible talent with shotguns, fun to watch, keep up the good work, all the best!

He's actually just kind of stupid. If you don't understand the concept of budget, then get out of the review game. No one should or does expect a budget thing to be like a premium model. You don't review a new sandwich at McDonald's by saying it sucks compared to the dinners you get at a 5 star restaurant. Sometimes people buy budget items not because they have to, but because they want a cheap, near-disposable backup and they want to know how it works within its price range, not some D-bag diatribe about how it's not as good as a $5000 shotgun.

  • @mikeblast7507
    @mikeblast7507 Před měsícem

I have an M88. Except for the reliability part, I think this is a fair review. Also, FWIW, I never get too worked up on a shotgun trigger. I mean, you're not using a shotgun for target shooting where a good trigger is critical, you're slapping it. Most people won't notice the difference between a "good" trigger and a "bad" trigger unless it's a really BAD trigger or someone brings it to their attention. In sum, if an M88 is all you can afford, it'll do just fine. I use mine for a backup and home defense SG (came with 2 barrels, 18.5 and 28). Other more expensive guns have come and gone over the years, but my M88 isn't going anywhere.

It is what it is. While the maverick 88 is a great budget option, it is what it is. I’ve owned a maverick 88. Wouldn’t own another but for what the gun is worth. It is a good option if you’re not wanting to spend a lot on a shotgun. In my opinion if you’re not someone who shoots a shotgun a lot, the maverick is great. However as someone who pretty much only shoots a shotgun. Waterfowl and small game. It’s worth it to me to spend a lil more on a shotgun. The maverick 88 is a utilitarian 2x4 of a shotgun. Cheap build but it works. I’ve owned a few benellis, a new browning A5, a browning Maxus 2, a franchi. Out of all of them the only one I still have and absolutely will not part ways with is my browning bps. That’s just me though. I prefer a pump. I like 870’s but they don’t fit me as well and as far as quality goes. They’re not what the BPS has continued to be. My thoughts on the Maverick 88 is it’s very very cheaply built, kicks like a mule and the action is as smooth as sandpaper. However it does go bang every time. The maverick 88 is essentially a mossberg 500 clone from Mexico, that’s assembled in Texas. Mossberg caught on and figured why not have a budget option in their line up and bought them out.

Being sponsored by a company MIGHT make someone “revisit” things… I bought my first Mossberg last year, a Magpul 590A1 and never fired it. I sent it back to the factory TWICE. The first time was because the bore / forcing cone was never machined on the inside of the barrel. I sent it back again because they didn’t replace the barrel, they machined the original barrel and left a sharp edge on the muzzle and scratched the 💩 out of the receiver, barrel and magazine in the process. I sent it back and they replaced the receiver and the magazine and touched up and re-parkerized the barrel. The gun thereby had to be shipped to an FFL, which was another cost. The gun came back the second time in ok condition so I sold it at a loss having never fired it. There is nothing in the world that could convince me to own another Mossberg. Beretta and Rizzini all the way, baby! 💪

I view it like buying a car, The Maverick 88 is like a Mercedes-Benz C-Class.. nice but lower end.. it's not a terrible car though, it's actually a Respectable.
Then the 500 and 590 is like the E-Class.. definitely more expensive, but still modest. Its more premium but not over the top.. a good blend of performance, reliability with some nice bells and whistles.
Then you got the S-Class, the bigger dogs like the Berettas and some of the Browning models.. Much more top tier, and largely out of reach for most people. Usually loaded with most, if not all the bells and whistles.. but I wouldn't take one out to the trenches..
I bought the 88 because of the price, and it being basically a less chiseled version of the 500.
Still a great looking scatter gat.. basic as hell but it does exactly what it's designed to do and has a good track record.
I figured for the price I'm getting it at, if I hate it then it's not a huge let down. I could still go get a 500 or 590..

I’d pay a little more or find a used mossberg 500 or any other mossberg over the 88 it works but it is a cheap gun like the other yes its more durable then most but yeah I have owned 870’s in the past and had issues with sticking I had 5 in total and all felt sticky and locking up etc and rust and just didn’t feel good to me. But each there own Remington isn’t what it use to be so makes sense.

I guess the Mav has its place, but for the same money you can locate a used 870 most anywhere because the bottom has fallen out of the used gun market right now. Look at lightly used better pump guns and compare to the Mav and then realize you can get way more quality at nearly the same price.

I think people forget that some people use guns for sport and speaking from a sporting perspective the mav 88 is not a great choice for that. Is it rugged, reliable, and does it just work? Yes. It can be better though and it is entry level. If that was a 6-700 dollar shotgun I would be pissed but at 250 its a great value but that doesnt mean its bad its value based.
