I also recommend the Nicholas Roerich Museum, a museum dedicated to the life and art of Nicholas Roerich, and the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. I recently went to New York and both are great and free to visit. Roerich's art is beautiful.

Bryant Park has the Holiday Bazaar in December leading up to Christmas, a great place to spend the day, and I saw the movie "Something From Tiffany's" being filmed there. Lots of great shopping and places to eat within the bazaar. Another great place is the Highline; a wonderful greenspace trail right in the middle of the city walking through Chelsea, and leading to more greenspace on the West Side along the Hudson River.

Governors Island was headquarters of the 1st army. Later it was headquarters of a Coast Guard district. Amazing view of downtown Manhattan.

I visited New York just a few weeks ago (in fact I was there during that rainy week unfortunately) and I really wanted to try CitiBike, but I thought their rates are not good if you're just a visitor and not a regular rider. Or maybe I understood it wrong, but it basically said that you had to bring back the bike every 30 minutes to one of their stations or you would get charged crazy extra fees. Can you say something about that please?
I took your advice and used Athotels, not a great experience unfortunately.
