- The moment that we've been waiting for is finally here! That would be the first reel mow with the Swardman Edwin reel mower on the lawn renovation area. This lawn is just 5 weeks old now and looks fantastic. I'm cutting here at just under 1 inch. Also in this video I do some edging with the black and decker edger and show you an issue I'm having with my kentucky bluegrass.

WELL SAID!!!
That's very well said! I love it.

Looks amazing. Good work. Happy for you. Thanks for the shout out.
Thank you sir. I truly appreciate the inspiration and help along the way.
Wooooooooooooo! Woooooooooooo!
Reminds me of a lawn you could play tennis on! Beautiful job bro.
It does have that grass court look. I love it!
That smile on your face makes all that hard work worth it in the end. Something you can be proud of. Looks fantastic!
One of CZcams's lawn bosses for sure. Good work Mr Ryan and thanks for showing the whole yard and not just the gorgeous but also the challenged areas. Shows you're a real dude.
Thanks for checking out the vid!
l never thought l'd be envious of someone's lawn mower. That reel-cut is awesome!
Neighbor with the cars in the grass in an eye sore to your gorgeous lawn. Also wonder what your neighbors think of your grass projects. Do they envy you or ever ask you for tips?? Grass looks awesome!!!
Looking tidy as bro! Love those diamond stripes 👌🏽
I'm just now at 5 weeks with my TTTF. I mowed 3 3/4" and striped last weekend and by the next day you couldn't even tell I had stripes. I mowed again yesterday and this morning you could still see the stripes. I'm guessing because over the week everything has started to thickening up. It looks so good, hard to believe I did this.. Best Looking Yard on the street.. Now I'm shooting for best yard in the subdivision.
Your smile 😃 says it all. High Five 🙌 Ryan. You can be very proud of yourself !!!
I'm thrilled with how it turned out so far. :)
I can help you with those grass clumps because I had the exact same thing about 4 years ago. It is a type of creeping fescue. In hot summers it tends to show some brown shades. The good news it that I found it quite easy to "seed out" in a single season with the blend of Dwarf Impact Kentucky Bluegrass and Champion Perennial Ryegrass I chose for renovating my lawn. I recall I overseeded the area about 4 times that year... by the time winter came around it was mostly gone and the following spring it didn't seem to come back at all. The company I buy my seed from told me these types of fescue are often part of a standard lawn seed blend and were probably part of the the sod used for the original lawn. Hope this helps. By the way, glad you see the difference edging the lawn makes to the overall appearance.
Interesting. My lawn is so thick it's hard to really have any great results from overseeding so I'll have to see what I can do there. Thanks for the comment!
Does it go dormant more quickly in winter or is it more susceptible to insect/fungal damage? I've just started noticing mats of a low growing fine bladed grass in my lawn. It's dying and/or a lighter shade of green where it's still alive and pulls up in mats.
@@spencerJtye I don't think mine went dormant any earlier, but it definitely seemed to dislike dry and heat of July through mid-September. What I had (supposedly a type of creeping fescue) pulled up quite easily, but like Ryan pointed out in his video, it was almost as if the roots were above the soil. What bothered me was that it spread a little more each year... literally crowding out the other grasses. The good news is that it was easy to "push out" in a single season with top dressing and seeding the area about 4 times.
Like, just have a nicely mowed green lawn is one thing. But the golf course/reel mowed is next level! I love it!
Glad you like the look. I love it
Was thinking of taking the front wheels off my lawnmower and replacing them with a roller..one on the front and one on the back..that's a great cut 😀☘☘👍
I just priced out a Swardman, mowing tall with my Honda and homemade stripe kit will have to do for now. I do want to level out my yard some so our family croquet games will be better. Honey, it's for the family.
Exactly!
Just under 1 inch. Exactly what I needed to know. The parts to allow me to go that high will arrive Wednesday. I think I am ready.
I may go slightly lower yet but we'll see. This is a good height as well.
Looks incredible! All that hard work paid off in a huge way. Congrats.
Thanks!
That grass is like our bentgrass here in the Northeast. Its what they use on putting greens and cut it at .25"
Looks amazing Ryan! All that hard work is paying off now!
Hey Ryan, I have a few areas where the grass root system is growing above the ground. Mowing that area shorter seems to be resolving the issue, but like you, will have to fully fix it in the spring. Don't worry, you're not doing anything wrong!
It's pretty ugly at the moment so hopefully I can train it down next year
I just scalped my Bermuda, and overseeded with perennial rye, yesterday. I’m excited! I can’t believe how much of a transformation can take place in 5 weeks. Looking great!
I am jealous of that winter lawn you get! The results here are why I believe that high quality seed makes a huge difference.
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care, and and the large amount of prep work work you did. You’ll be looking great come Spring. I too am jealous, of your winter lawn. I wish we had snow. Ever! It’s only about an hr. away, but still. It’d be nice.
Lol Ryan there is a part in this video around 9:35 where you do the “I’m not happy I had to switch to the rotary mower right now and now my reel mower that I can’t use is in my way” bump. I know this al too well lol. it’s the little things.
Ryan, it looks great! Congrats on all your hard work! I believe the grass you are describing is creeping bentgrass. I have the same issue and that is what I believe it to be. If you find out for sure can you please let us all know. Keep up the great videos!
At least ya know how to cut with the rotary mower.. keep that front tire over that last pass so you get the full length of the pass. JS. AND the other myth and legend Connor ward sent me here. Good job.
Pro tip
From the looks of it when you throw down seed with straw, it is not the seed popping it’s the straw seed popping
Thanks for the mowing video! Currently about a half inch of growth away from mowing my renovation. Watching this video helped scratch that mowing itch a bit!
The mowing is the best part. Hopefully you'll get there soon.
Your neighbor has renewed my appreciation for my HOA. Great work on your lawn!
Season is almost here
Ryan that sideways grass looks the Nimbleweed. It's an evasive weed. I'm treating my lawn with Tenacity as this stuff is trying to take over.
Ryan I think you should double pass in the same direction along the edges of the lawn between the curb and sidewalk. The strippers will look a little cleaner.
Good to see it put a smile on your dial, hard work pays off even with a few setbacks. Good video as always Ryan.😁👍👍
All of the work was completely worth it and I'd do it again....well I probably will next year. Haha
The side renovation looks amazing! So happy for you that all that hard work you did paid off, and glad to see you so happy about the results. Great job!
Thanks!
Ryan, your obsession is our inspiration and education. Love what you're doing. Am using Super Seed on my lawn. Gonna have to kill it, level, and reseed next spring. Wanna get what you've got on that side lawn. Thanks for helping me see that it's possible. For more curb appeal, I say get a kit and paint your house number on the curb. Looks sharp if done well.
Are you sure it’s not bentgrass in the back? If it’s a lime color compared to your normal grass it might be invasive bentgrass. You can spot spray the area with tenacity to confirm.
DaveAtUofL I agree. I’ve had Bent grass come into my lawn and it behaves just like that.
It's the same color as the surrounding bluegrass areas but I can try a test spot.
Ryan I agree with you that the ugly rooted grass is indeed bluegrass, and it's the
consequence of mowing tall. While mowing tall is better to keep the soil from drying and crowding out weeds, the bottom of the grass blade is shaded/lays over causing the unsightly colored blades/roots when you cut shorter in the fall. I face this every year as well(mow tall until fall). The only real remedy is to mow shorter all season.. maybe try just 1 notch shorter during summer, and see if that helps you next fall
Finally! Someone to agree I'm not crazy. Haha
I wanted to post that just to see if anyone else had any experience with it so thank you for sharing. My mowing really tall experiment this spring was just plain dumb and I won't be doing that again. So hopefully next year I can get things cut lower in the spring to train it better. We'll see what happens.
Glad to share, experimenting is what I love so much about lawncare
1st off- Front yard looks incredible!!! 2nd- perhaps it may bentgrass in the back. Tenacity would take care of it for you but you have to be very specific with applying it. Bentgrass is very hard to get rid of, I've been trying for years!
Yeah it looks just like the surrounding bluegrass but I'll see if I can do some testing. It might have to be more next year if it gets too cold soon.
Hi Ryan! just happened to know that you are living Fulda, MN that I used to work there at Maple Lawn facility. I used to live in Worthington and worked in the surrounding areas from Worthington, Slayton, Fulda, Windom, ST James, Jackson, Herron Lake. Very enjoy your video and thanks for sharing.
Still remember that always go to the Grandma Kitchen to have lunch
Good ole Fulda...I don't make it back too much but cool you know where it is! That's more than most people...haha
Great vid Ryan.i'm from Europe (Greece) and i decide after your videos to make my lawn new.I choose the sparring mix seed (festuca 60%-lollium perrene40%) and the result so far is amazing. I used your methods about 70% because we have climate differences ,soil etc.Keep the good work and have a good winter.Thank u for all the advices : )
Great! Glad to help. :)
That mower is sick
Yeah it is an amazing machine.
New Subscriber- inspired to fix my lawn. My neighbors are defiantly going to envy 😁
My mind is blown. Well done, sir!
Thank you!
Rock N Roll man.... Looks good. I have seen that side growth before my old boss told it from when you overseed and cut the lawn grass clumps with seed in it sitting on top of the lawn or from a heavy rain and wash out occurred.
An innocent search for reel mowers has led me into the sacred order of lawn nerds :)
Be prepared for addiction!
@@ryanknorrlawncare That's what I'm afraid of :)
Nice job, Ryan. The plan and effort that you have put into this project were well worth it.
Ironic that I’ve been watching all the rain videos when it’s been dry as a bone here in KCMO and I’ve been out enjoying the mow but now it’s soggy and rainy here. I’m standing outside under my porch while it rains watching this video. I hope you finally edge!
I mean MAN. I’VE been waiting for this video for SO LONG. I’m sharing the satisfaction haha 👏🏼👏🏼
Still 3-4 inches of rain expected in the next few days. It's soggy city right now.
Awesome lawnmower very beautiful lawn and nice cut!!!!!!!
Looks fantastic, great job! Looks like your neighbor is in need of a storage unit.
The grass weed in your back yard looks to be bermuda or nimblewill. Bermuda is no fun getting out of a bluegrass yard. Great videos! Thanks!
You like multiple shot angles, but you have not yet put a camera in a hole. I'm surprised. Just imagine how cool it would look with that swordsman going over.
When I worked the golf course we had that happen (the lateral grass) on areas where we had dense soils and use the core aerator and then overseeded. The plants that pulled up in the cores were tenacious at growing (strong when pulled up) and found roots back into the soil but stayed "horizontal" in the core... until the core's soil dissolved away, then the root ball/crown and thatch were left behind and the plants still thrived due to the ample irrigation and nutrients available and the overall density of grass crowns due to dense overseeding. Almost like you rolled a piece of sod over some existing grass... or at least some small chunks of sod.
I can't really tell if that's what's going on for your lawn, but it could be?
I don't think I aerated heavily enough for that to happen as it seems like it has been established this way for a while. However that is interesting what you found on the golf course. Thanks for the comment!
The more I think about it - granted it was 20+ years ago, the grass we were seeing ball up like that was bentgrass and probably poa annua.
Mercy, those stripes! Payday for all the effort!
Just over seeded rye yesterday. A nice 12 hours of fun. I'm already looking at it today thinking "sprout, cmon sprout lets go!"
And that's the great thing about rye, it will not be long! :)
No doubt... may be adding to my impatience lol. I'm trying a new blend this year stepping up my game. Always bought box store stuff. This time I got a deal on Ewing eagle blend. Put a lot of prep into leveling and aeration. Was blessed with some showers at 2am Sunday. What's a lawn nut to do but stay up and watch... I think I'm certifiable 😉
Bro! Talking about inspirational!!!! That new start to your lawn is one beautiful piece of art!!!!!! Can't wait for more updates!!!! 👍👌👍👌 keep up the good work!
Thanks! I'm extremely happy with how it has turned out so far.
Looks awesome man. That ear to ear grin lol 👍🏻
Wow 5 Weeks. Excellent Results on your Reno!! Thanks for the Update!
5 weeks and you made a ballpark! ⚾️🤙🏼👍🏼
I'm extremely happy so far.
For your super wet areas, could you throw down some peat moss, allow it to absorb 20 times its weight in water, and then remove it with a rotary or rake?
Maybe but it becomes really stuck together when it gets wet so I'm not sure how well it would work.
Good point. Have you ever heard of a soak-away? It’s basically a deep augered hole that’s backfilled with gravel and relandscaped on top to force water deep down into the subsoil. Helps a lot with depressional areas and with clay-rich soils.
Source: Degree in Land Reclamation
Looks amazing Ryan. Very inspiring. Great job on the reno and the editing. Your videos have a great flow.
Thanks!
3:50 now that looks like a golf course, that lawn is loooking awesome with those stripes👍👍👍
Awesome lawn mate . That weird grass is why I did a renovation . I tried to power rake it , it produces loads of thatch , I overseed it but it came back . The only way is to kill it off in patches and start again .
Interesting. I'll have to see what happens going forward and next season.
@@ryanknorrlawncare I'm taking a total wild guess, but could that be grass spreading by stolon? Maybe during the higher mowing the stolon got on top of the lawn before putting down its new roots?
Looks good!!!
I have that same shallow root problem in spots in my lawn. I could pull up areas like a blanket! The Pest and Lawn Ginja has a couple videos on it. Amazing results in such a short period of time!
Have any links?
Ryan: I have learned so much from you and I have learned a bunch from the Lawn Ginja as well. He has some great vids. This is a reno on his lawn. czcams.com/video/WXsSvnIdlbo/video.html
Man can't wait for the striping contest! Getting creative with new patterns is probably the highlight of my MN mowing season.
I'm surprised you don't have a set of wider and faster tires on your rotary mower for those sinking times.
Great look👍! Good to see you in better spirits brotha!
The love of mowing and sunshine is enough for me. :)
5 short weeks, wow incredible !!
Great work Ryan ! Great to see that smile ! Hard work pays off and you showed that today
Wow your grass is awesome great job. Nice to see you smiling again.lol
Perfect music!! Conquering the Lawn!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice!
Looks like nimblewill grass. Hit with Tenacity to see if it turns white, compared to the surrounding grass.
It honestly looks just like the bluegrass surrounding it but I'll do some testing if it doesn't decide to freeze soon. :(
Send some of that cool weather this way. 80s, humid and bugs here make it uncomfortable to get outdoor stuff done.
Lord have MERCY - looks incredible. Congrats Ryan! 👏🏻
Thanks!
Wow, fantastic job! Really nice work. It is amazing to see how far it has come. Those stripes were fantastic.
Very very nice . Grass is back on point.
Nice collection of wrecks on your neighbours drive!
He keeps the wrecks there so he doesn't have to view Ryan's epic domination.
Looks like you may have some bent grass growing in the back.
I was thinking bermuda grass myself. had this in my yard. Used ornamec, worked like a charm.
WOW you are going for the 1-2 inch look. You got your hands full next year!. Full time job on your lawn after your 8 hours of work lol
My areas I seeded a couple weeks ago are filling nicely as well. I do however think I have a few bald spot due to rain washout but I will reseed in the spring.
It usually happens that it needs the spring to really fully establish and mature as well but you'll be fine.
perhaps but i was thin on seed and we had a huge storm the night of me seeding. i did use your peat moss idea. if it fills in in the spring that would be sweet but if not i will reseed. i just dont see any seeds in those areas. love the videos.
I had some similar spots like that that showed up after doing a fairly aggressive dethatch process
It's interesting for sure.
love the look - also love the typical american look of houses at the end (17:34) - all the same driveway - same front lawn etc. Except some are better maintained of course!
Beautiful!! That truck in your neighbors driveway is a nice addition :)
14:47 is creeping bent grass. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!! From the birds eating the seed and pooping it out.
First thought was bentgrass or perhaps poa t. Seeing similar issues this year in our mixed KBG/PR lawn, which was mowed taller (3-4”) this past spring now cut lower (2-2.5”). If I can for sure confirm bentgrass is taking hold I want to try a Tenancity program next year. Tenacity is supposed to work well against bentgrass. My only worry is uncovering a bigger problem than expected.
Pest and Lawn Ginja has an interesting video about roots growing above ground instead of below ground due to over watering. Maybe the KBG is misbehaving from certain conditions and practices? Maybe I will regret mowing too tall. Just another thing to lose sleep over.
I still believe it's bluegrass and was just from mowing it too tall. I'll be able to know for sure next season if I change my habits a bit there and get it started much lower right away. The lawn was dormant most of the summer so I don't think overwatering could be an issue at all.
I think it's poa trivialis. I get it in my yard year round because of my irrigation and then my neighbor gets it every fall because of its shallow root system, it can't handle the summer stress. It's a tough one to get rid of. I ended up digging up patches of it and seeded in those areas. There's no residential chemicals that I know of avaliable to treat it.
Ryan and lawn rebel ( hopefully I can ask both as I know u have met up before and fined it and I assume are friends), how thick and long can grass be for reel mow I hear it has to be mowed often, more than weekly. It won’t cut weeds. It has to be perfectly flat. Do either or both of u have a vid u can refer me to. Also do either of u have a vid on preferred cheap reel mower with bagger. Thx!!!!!
Hi Ryan. I believe those clumps of grass you were finding in the backyard that were growing above the soil line and growing sideways are a PRG species from lawn superstore that is "sideways PRG". Even though it may not be supposed to be in your PRG order you placed with seed superstore, I am almost positive that is what that is. I have the same very ugly grass that took over a lot of my yard after I overseeded with PRG mix I got from seed superstore. I even talked to the owner there and he tried to tell me I may have grubs, which I do not. I told him the grass was not established any depth to the roots and was easy to just pull up. It looks exactly like what you have. It is for this reason I don't think I will order PRG again from seed superstore.
I've never added any ryegrass to the backyard though and it's definitely bluegrass. I just believe it got much too tall this spring and was in a thick environment that fooled it into growing the way it did.
oh. my bad then. I am glad it isn't the problem I have. The rest of your lawn looks awesome!
I’m smiling with ya dude. It looks awesome. Congrats on the hard work and great results
Thank you!
amazing... simply stunnin'
It's all good until the council Rock up when it's wet and churn it up with a zero turn and then too finish it off a great daine lays a steaming mount of champ ist winnolot. Not on your main lawn obviously lol
I think that stuff in the back is nimblewill. Tenacity will take care of that
I'll do some work on some test spots and see
So happy for you, all the hard work was worth it!!! Congrats
That was one sweet mow in first 7 minutes. Congrats on such a big payoff for all your hard work!
You did that from seed, that's impressive. Good work.
A lot of grass in those sidewalk cracks! Your lawn looks fantastic though. Really impressed with how it came out - and I know after the amount of work you've put in this is been a long time coming.
Great work, Ryan! You are truly a master at your craft. Your lawn is looking really good!
I appreciate that!
Looks good, Connor would be proud.
Wow, Ryan, absolutely amazing progress! That reel mower is amazing! Great job!
Yes that mower is a work of art. Thanks!
True sign of someone obsessed heh heh heh nice.
You may have answered this question in the past but here it goes. How do you promote root growth with cutting your lawn so short?
Well first off it's important to seed or have varieties of grass that were bred to be cut in this way. So I made sure to use seed varieties that were made for this and then it's a lot of things but proper irrigation, proper fertilizing, and I'm going to push humic acid on it as well for root growth.
@@ryanknorrlawncare Any recent T Nex applications? Or is that just for summer?
Satisfying to watch
what kind of lawn mower is this . I want to surprise my husband with one. Thanks you are doing a wonderful job.

Wow that's a nice mower
Try Worx 56v weed whacker n edger. Does an awesome job in no time.
I had to watch again! Awesome😀😀
Connor will be proud! Looks amazing
Wow, the renovation looks great ! Your house will be next on the Milorganite bag ! Maybe from all that rain you have had that stuff in the backyard is hydroponic grass.
