  • (2 Sep 1970) RR7035A NIGERIA: EIGHT MONTHS AFTER THE WAR
When the war ended, the number of people thought to
be in urgent need of food ran into millions. The
Nigerian Government under General Gowon said it
would cope with this problem on its own, and without
the help of outside agencies, many of whom it blamed
for prolonging the war. In this report - one of the first
the Nigerian Government has allowed to be filmed
since the end of the war - we look at how Nigeria is
slowly being restored from the ravages of war, and
examine to what extent the bitterness of three years
    fighting still exists.

It's amazing that onitsha, Enugu and other Igbo cities are now more developed that most parts of the north that never saw war. The Igbos are the most resilient black Africans in the world .

Even now, it amazes me. When the war was over, we had absolutely nothing - not even the walls of our house were standing. Then in a frenzy, every male in our village contributed brick-laying, carpentry and masonry skills and a frenetic rebuilding effort began. Those without skills gave their labor, while the women cooked. Money was not charged - nobody had any. All the adults simply swapped skills. Three months later, most families had places to lay their heads without exposure to the elements. The attention then shifted to rebuilding elementary and secondary schools - every community did launches and individuals donated zinc, cement, nails, lumber etc. I still shed tears at the scale of destruction that I witnessed as a child, but I bawl for real when I look at the skylines of Onitsha, Aba, Enugu, Nnewi, Owerri, Nkpor etc today. It's like nothing ever happened - it's unreal.

Don't be a fool. There hundreds of tribes in the north. Hausas, Fulanis, Kanuris, Jukun etc. None of these tribes separately are bigger than the Igbos in population. Apart from Kano, Sokoto and half of Kaduna, what other cities does Hausaland have? Speak for your tribe don't speak for the north. We have Enugu, Port Harcourt, Asaba as well LGCs in all the surrounding states of the 5 nucleus states especially Delta and Rivers state. If you were Yoruba, I would understand as they own Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Ilorin, Oshogbo, Ile Ife etc. But you're not. Hausaland isn't better than Igboland. *Case closed*

Very enlightening have to credit the ingenuity and indomitable spirit of the igbos. However just reading the comments we are still beset with the same problems that led to the civil war. Unfortunately it is safe to say that Nigeria is not and never will be a united country.

The commentator is very funny, he said we have to do all we can and forget the past. But this is not the type of past that can be forgotten. Never the only thing that can make us to forgive but not forget is just give us BIAFRA that's all if not the fight that will erupt in the future again will be worst ever in Africa. Because it shall be fought with the last drop of our blood if need be. We can't be enslaved forever because GOD didn't create us to be enslaved. Just like GOD sent Moses to go and let my people. I saying it now that the whole world ok let me just that UN should tell QUEEN ELISABETH of UK who is the present day PHARAOH to let us the Biafrans go because we all know that she's the one holding us. She have eaten enough! She must let us before the ones she had eaten begin to pump out of her nose. The blood of the innocent Biafrans that she have engineered their death has been crying out to GOD ALRIGHTY and very soon OUR GOD the GOD of ABRAHAM, IZAAC and JACOB will be judgement on her and her throne if she continue to harden her heart.

The tragedy of the Yoruba as I see it, is that they are condemned to play second fiddle to the oligarchs - at least for the foreseeable future. The day you wake up to the need for absolute freedom to use your evident good brains, you will find yourselves where Biafra was in 1967. Then and only then will you decide to either fight and be free, or live the mess that one Nigeria represents. Think about it.
