Lenny, this is the best interview that I have seen with Nikita. Is so difficult to find great info about his thought process launching TBH and GAS and finally someone did it. New subscriber 🎉
Great episode you two. I booked an Intro call with Nikita to discuss an app I was working on, and it was clear that his number one priority was to make sure I got my money's worth out of the call.
10:50 Targeting Teen Users Teens have adaptable habits, crucial for growth. Older users invite fewer new app users. Critical to attract users who socialize daily. 12:15 Importance of User Invitations Invitation rates drop 20% per year of age. Adults require ads for user acquisition. Building for adults is costly and complex.
Lenny, this was a rock solid episode. Learned a lot. Can't build apps for older folks I guess. Keep bringing on great guests. AI Product managers would be great to spotlight.
I sat through the entire thing and it was amazing. A lot of tactical stuff and Nikita clearly knows what he is saying! Thanks a lot for covering this topic, Lenny
I worked for a fintech that was trying to target young adults, and after doing marketing research, I also came to same conclusion as Nikita. Young adults are less likely to adopt new apps. It's better to target teens or as early as possible.
Love the episode, super helpful! Nikita, what are your thoughts on apps that rely on ads as a core revenue channel? And how do you approach building a strong moat for B2C apps in such a competitive space?
Great interview and fun guest by the way just a sidenote, you interrupted at 1:26 which wallet seems like it was in line with what he was talking about, could’ve possibly totally derailed with his line of thinking was there always best to let people finish and give them a breath to expand I was very curious what more he was gonna say he on this topic
Wish you guys had dug more into the "pixels", although he might be reticent to do that given he usually charges for it? Some examples could have been fun. Great talk overall.
Hearing about the battle of the hoax, I just want someone to solve the dis/mis-information problem. This problem is causing havoc to the world, politically, economically, socially, and personally.
nikita is quite an anomaly. the only thing that is a bit questionable is targeting teen users in the first place and manipulating their underdeveloped brains. but still his story is the most interesting so far.
What does it mean for the customer service system to "break"? How do things break in 3 days if users are getting the app from the App Store? Why can't Apple servers handle a single school of users?
@@LennysPodcast You are right. We did get the MO of levels but nobody asked him what's he planning to do/build for the future? Would he also become an early-stage investor or sorts? (I don't mind working for him 😅/ or having him as my Indie investor!!!!!) AAAND, someone should intervieww you!! Someone should be [Sam/Shaan] duo
22:25 I think the LA CEO who Nikita is talking about here is probably Snapchat CEO - Evan Spiegel. It's kind of wild to think that he had both Snapchat and Facebook bidding to acquire his app.
15:15 "Eventually we figured out an interesting heuristic for identifying consumer product opportunities that ultimately led us to TBH." @LennysPodcast This is a million-dollar question; don't change the topic to selling for $30 million to Facebook! Headlines don't need any more airtime. What you should be asking at this point is, "What is that heuristic?" 🤔 People watching this want to know the valuable data that only your guest (Nikita) can provide, not a regurgitation of headlines or reiteration of the time it takes to get there. Don't be so hellbent on restating the obvious ("It takes time") or drawing attention to a headline that you forget why your listeners are tuned in to the episode!
This all sounds great but let’s not forget that tbh and gas both fell off just as fast as the viral rise. Would have been great to talk about it, because good products should last after all.
The dude that left the company one day before the launch. I hope for him he got wet from the rain that came right after. Otherwise, he is probably pissed as effff....
20 minutes in, and I've already gained more insights than I have in months. There's a reason why Nikita was the most requested guest for this podcast.

10:50 Targeting Teen Users
Teens have adaptable habits, crucial for growth.
Older users invite fewer new app users.
Critical to attract users who socialize daily.
12:15 Importance of User Invitations
Invitation rates drop 20% per year of age.
Adults require ads for user acquisition.
Building for adults is costly and complex.
33:08 is one of the example of doing things that do not scale but are incredibly valuable.
This is literally the only episode anyone ever needs to listen to.
what an insane roller coaster ride this episode was.
Nikita is a such a unique thinker. I hope he throws his incredible creative thinking at a big idea some day.
He literally stole the concept and name of TBH from another brilliant product thinker Chris Prescott (the PM for Real Real)

Nikita can't, it's not in his playbook
This is one of my favorite discussions on product management in a long time! Second-time listen through now.

Woohoo! Been counting down the days until this drop all week 😁
He's the goat. Hate it or love it.
Basically this guy is GENIUS, I'm listening for the 2nd time
This has been one of the greatest episodes Lenny! Pure gold!
Starts at 6:00. You’re welcome!
Your questions are really insightful and informative. Amazing podcast excited for more content
Designers run the show! Love this!
the man the myth the legend
amazing stuff! Such a founder at heart! Keep up amazing work!
Joh Lenny. I've listened to so many of your podcasts but don't know where to start with all that info. What should one do to start a great business?
What type of business?
Manufacturing electric scooters

He sounds like Zuck but 50% less robotic
haha that kept occurring to me too. He should have never sat at the same table 😂
Amazing episode - but what happened to the Lightning Round?
I decided to use that time to keep asking questions 😬

It’s called community notes on twitter
1. Build an app
2. Get acquired
3. Build it again
Got it

How do you seed an app in a school?
I am wondering that too and also how many total number of students were there in that school
What analytics do you actually check? The ones provided by apple? They dont offer any analytics to see if users shared the app

very interesting guy.
Приятный спред на коине который еще и растет))
the funny thing is ive never heard of any of these apps
He only duplicated one idea. Not really impressive
I hadn't either. It looks like his apps get bought and then shut down a few months later due to low usage
Please reach out and work with me if you are like Nikita, I live and breath this and I need more people like him around me
How can I reach you?!
The man himself.
Make an app for SAT and GCSE
Never heard of him

Nikita's voice sounds shockingly like Zuck's 👀
Small world. I think I know whom the other founders whom had to shut down similar apps.

17:54 I see... That's why TikTok was so successful. 🤔 They targeted the exact age group you're talking about.
😊
Both Gas and TBH died. Where's the success story? Buy low sell high?
Why the guy who sold a bunch of apps for 10+ mln wants to give private consultations for 2.5k?
