THE SONG - "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" was written by Michael Cleveland for Indeep, the American post-disco, R&B, electro-funk group that he founded. It was recorded in 1983 and mixed at Eastern Artists Recording Studio in New Jersey for the record label 'Sound of New York/Becket Records'. It was released as a single on Feb 15, 1983 (some sources say 1982) in three formats 5", 7", and 12". It was also released as the third track of the same-titled album in 1983. The 7" single runs for 4 mins 16 secs while the 12" single and album track run for 5 mins 40 secs.
While "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart - it "bubbled-under" entering on Feb 26, 1983 and reaching #101 - it did well on other charts reaching #10 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart and #2 on their Dance/Club Singles chart. It was popular overseas as well. It entered the UK singles chart on Jan 22, 1983 at #65 and peaked at #13 four weeks later. In March 1983 it reached #2 on the Dutch Top 40 and Belgium's Ultratop 50 charts. In Spain it reached #7 and in Germany it reached #10.
For Indeep however, it was a one-hit wonder since none of their other releases met with much success. "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" has been sampled and covered many times and has appeared in movies and video games.
THE COLLAB - Regular viewers will recognize Sina's older drum kit. In fact, this is the second time around for "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" since Sina released a bass and drum cover on Jul 28, 2017. That older version can be found in her video collection. There was no reason to redo Sina's tracks but Mike told Rosanna that the other tracks were "recorded from scratch" and only the "male vocal part" was sampled from the original. So that's Sina on bass and drums and Mike on the guitars. Rick Benbow was drafted to provide all the synth/keyboard parts. That leaves the main vocals...
THE FEATURED ARTIST - On vocals is Victory Vizhanska, a multi-talented 14 year old musician, singer, actress, model and cosplayer from Kyiv, Ukraine. She was the lead singer, from March to September 2019, for the all-girl rock band The Sixsters which many of Sina's fans know about mostly through their young drummer Kate Kuziakina.
Victory's bio states that music and stage are her real love and life. Singing from early childhood she has developed a four octave range. She also developed the skill of singing with a closed mouth aka ventriloquism! She's had roles in 4 theater performances, 6 ads/movies, and, as a model, has had more than 25 photo sessions.
Victory also plays ukulele and loves "cool" music - rock, R&B,soul and electro-pop. When she asked Sina for a possible collab, "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" was waiting, practically custom-made for her!

Heard this song first from the 2001 Mariah Carey's album Glitter soundtrack (years later). Wasn't special on that album. Never heard Indeep. Popular music back in '83 was synth-pop / new wave. Disco ran it's course. Even Donna Summer wasn't doing disco in 1983.
